The Howard and Florida A&M marching bands wowed during Celebration Bowl halftime performances

Check out these awesome Celebration Bowl marching band performances from Howard and Florida A&M.

The Cricket Celebration Bowl pitted two of the best HBCU teams in college football against each other on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It also squared off two of the best marching bands in all of the country in Howard’s “Showtime” Marching Band and Florida A&M’s Marching 100.

Rutgers men’s basketball improves to 4-0 at home with win over Howard

Rutgers men’s basketball got another win on Saturday night.

Jersey Mike’s Arena is becoming a difficult place for opponents to play. With a win over Howard on Saturday night, the Scarlet Knights improved to 4-0 at home to start the 2023-2024 campaign. In their latest victory, the Scarlet Knights were almost unstoppable offensively and dominated in the second half.

Against Howard, Rutgers’ starters set the tone. Four of their five starters scored more than 10 points, including Derek Simpson, who led both teams with 23. The offensive explosion marked the first time this season that Rutgers scored more than 80 points.

Additionally, Rutgers capitalized on the Bisons’ mistakes. Howard turned the ball over 21 times and committed 22 fouls. As a result, they were unable to gain any momentum.

After ending the first half up by eight, Rutgers used the last twenty minutes to pull away. In the second half, they outscored Howard 46-32. That included a 24-8 run, which gave Rutgers a 20-point lead with less than six minutes left.

After an extended break, Rutgers will look to continue its winning ways when it takes on Saint Peter’s on November 27.

USF vs Howard Game Preview

Why Howard Will Win

The Bison have to force mistakes and limit their own to stay in this.

They’re 0-2, but they weren’t bad in the 31-28 loss to Hampton last week with a big passing day from QB Quinton Williams in a furious fourth quarter rally to make it close.

The O has to be decent from the start – BYU scored 28 points on USF in the 50-21 win – the defense has to force at least three takeaways, and there can’t be the turnovers that helped Hampton take over the game.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why USF Will Win

This is when the Bulls have to go off.

The defense wasn’t even close in the loss to BYU, but this week Baylor transfer QB Gerry Bohanon will get more time to work and the running backs will rip off yards in chunks.

Howard wasn’t even close against the Hampton rushing attack, and this week the Bulls will get big gashes out of several backs – expect at least 200 yards and around seven yards per carry.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a desperately needed easy win for a USF program that hasn’t known a victory since October of last year, and has just two wins since the beginning of 2020.

The Bulls will keep the offensive production going as they show a glimpse of what they might be capable of.

Watch: Prentiss Hubb talks Notre Dame playing at Howard, Mike Brey

Get to know the Irish point guard.

With Notre Dame having come alive over the past month, it only makes sense to get to know the players.

Recently, the athletic department’s YouTube channel began a series called “Irishography,” which highlights one member of the men’s basketball team. So far, the series has profiled Paul Atkinson Jr., Cormac Ryan and Dane Goodwin. Now, it’s Prentiss Hubb’s turn:

It’s nice to hear Hubb acknowledge the historical significance of the Irish’s game at Howard. Of course, he has to mention how it was a home game for him: He grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, which is slightly more than 20 miles from the Howard campus. There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging that.

It also is obvious he will hold Mike Brey in high regard for the rest of his life. College basketball players often see their coaches as father figures, and there is no exception here. Hopefully, that relationship will continue to grow after Hubb graduates.

Notre Dame’s Blake Wesley wins ACC Freshman of the Week for third time

This kid is something else.

Christmas may be a month behind us, but Blake Wesley is the gift who keeps on giving for Notre Dame fans. For the third time this season, the guard from South Bend has been honored as the ACC Freshman of the Week. This time, he’s sharing the honor with Duke’s Paolo Banchero. Both players could be picked in the first round of this year’s NBA draft, making this week’s selections all the more appealing.

Wesley was instrumental in the Irish’s two road wins over Howard and Louisville over the past week. He averaged 17.5 points and shot 54 percent from the field. The 22-point game against the Cardinals marked the fifth time he has scored at least 20 points this season. He also has reached double figures in scoring 15 consecutive times, which is an Irish freshman record.

It no longer is a question of whether Wesley will have a big game every night, but whether it will be enough to bring the Irish to victory.

Mike Brey speaks after Notre Dame survives late scare vs. Howard

That was too close.

Mike Brey probably needed some antacids as soon as Notre Dame finished holding off a late charge by Howard in a 71-68 win. An 11-point lead with less than three minutes to go was cut down to one as the Bison (6-8) imposed a full-court press that the Irish (11-6) simply could not shake off. It took a late layup by Prentiss Hubb and a missed Bison 3-pointer in the final seconds for the Irish to escape enemy territory with a victory.

Nate Laszewski was the big player for the Irish as he scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his third double-double this season. Dane Goodwin also scored 17, and Blake Wesley added 13 to break Troy Murphy’s program record for most double-digit scoring games by a true freshman (14). Of course, all anyone wanted to talk about after this game was how close it was. Here are some of Brey’s comments from his postgame news conference:

Notre Dame visiting Howard on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

This game will feature a first for the Irish.

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day will feature games played throughout the day. Probably all of them will pay tribute to the civil rights leader who worked so hard to make life better for people of all races. One such game will include Notre Dame, which is taking a break from its ACC schedule to play a nationally televised matinee at Howard. This marks the first time the Irish have played a historically Black college or university on the road.

This season, the Irish have won almost every game in which the following has taken place:

  • The Irish have shot better than their opponent.
  • The Irish make at least 10 3-pointers.
  • An Irish player scores at least 20 points.
  • The margin of the final score is five points or less.

This game also will be a homecoming of sorts for Mike Brey. He played his senior season (1981-82) at George Washington, which is located only two miles from Howard.
