Full Notre Dame schedule for 2021-22 season released

The conference games have been unveiled.

Exactly one week ago, Notre Dame released its 2021-22 nonconference schedule. Now, we know when and how often the Irish will be playing every ACC opponent as the full schedule now is available. In fact, every team in the conference had its schedule unveiled in a special on the ACC Network. Why they couldn’t have just released everyone’s schedule at the same time is anyone’s guess, but ultimately, that doesn’t matter as much as the mere release of the schedule.

As you’ll see below, the Irish will have a home-and-home with six conference opponents. The remaining eight opponents will be split evenly at one location or the other. One conference game will be played in the middle of the nonconference schedule, and it will be ACC opponents from the last week of 2021 on except for the game at Howard on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Here are the games that really will count toward a return to March Madness, so plan accordingly:

Notre Dame releases nonconference schedule for 2021-22 season

Who will the Irish play before ACC action begins?

It always is exciting whenever a nonconference schedule is announced. You know who you’re going to play leading up to your usual opponents. Some hail from conferences you only hear about during March Madness, and others are prominent or talented programs that you really can use as a measuring stick for the type of team you have. In short, nonconference play can say a lot about your program.

Notre Dame released its nonconference schedule Thursday. We’ll know more about their ACC schedule over the next couple of weeks, and the tournament the Irish will be playing around Thanksgiving could feature more games than what currently is listed. We also don’t know how many games at all could be affected by COVID-19 as we all know that the situation remains very fluid. Until then, here are the teams the Irish will face after home exhibitions against Nazareth on Oct. 29 and St. Norbert on Nov. 5:

Notre Dame associate head coach Rod Balanis taking same job at Howard

The Irish’s bench is going through a shakeup.

Since Mike Brey first arrived at Notre Dame, Rod Balanis is the only assistant coach to have stuck by his side throughout. That’s 22 seasons the duo has been together. However, all good things must come to an end, and that appears to be happening here. Balanis, Brey’s associate head coach, will be leaving Notre Dame to take the same position at Howard:

Earlier this offseason, Notre Dame rehired Anthony Solomon as associate head coach for his third stint on Brey’s staff. The good news for the Irish is that they have someone who can slide into Balanis’ role immediately. Whether Balanis is leaving because of or in spite of Solomon’s return is unknown. What we do know is that the winningest coach in Irish history will have someone else in the right-hand man role for the first time in a long time.

Best of luck to Balanis in his new opportunity, and he will be missed in South Bend.

Former Vols’ offensive coordinator Larry Scott debuts as Howard’s head coach

Larry Scott debuted as Howard’s head coach Saturday.

Howard lost to Delaware State, 17-10, in its season opener during the 2021 spring season. Howard did not play in the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Scott enters his first head coaching position following seven seasons as an assistant at Power Five schools: Miami (2013-15, tight ends and interim head coach), Tennessee (2016-17, tight ends and offensive coordinator) and Florida (2018-19, tight ends).

Howard led the contest, 3-2, heading into the fourth quarter. Delaware State would outscore the Bison, 15-7, in the final quarter of play.

Part of Delaware State’s fourth quarter scoring included a 41-yard interception by Esaias Guthrie with 2:06 remaining.

Release: Notre Dame – Howard MLK Day Meeting Postponed To 2022

Notre Dame’s trip to Washington, DC to take on Howard this Monday has been postponed until 2022.

NOTRE DAME, Indiana (January 16, 2021) — The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball trip to Washington, D.C., on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 18, 2021, to face Howard University has been postponed until the 2022 season.

The postponement is due to COVID-19 safety precautions within the Howard program.

“I am disappointed that we will not be able to make the trip on Monday, but we are committed to going back in 2022 to make this game happen,” Glenn and Stacey Murphy Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mike Brey said.

“We hope that by next season, we will have a packed Burr Gymnasium, be able to invite special guests connected with both teams in the D.C. area and have the experience we envisioned when we scheduled this game in the summer of 2020.”

“We are all incredibly disappointed by this cancellation,” said Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis.

“This was a tremendous opportunity to bring national exposure to our basketball team and the University. However, it goes without saying that the health and welfare of our student-athletes is our priority first and foremost.”

The game was set to be played Monday afternoon and broadcast nationally on Fox with Howard alum Gus Johnson on the call, joined by analyst Jim Jackson.

Since 2019, Howard has honored Dr. King’s Celebration of Excellence by hosting nonconference contests with iconic, historical institutions. In the past two seasons, HU has greeted Ivy League perennials Harvard (2019) and Yale (2020) to The Burr.

The connections between Notre Dame men’s basketball, the Howard coaching staff and the Washington, DC, area run deep. Mike Brey and associate head coach Rod Balanis have roots in the DMV area and both graduated from DeMatha High School. Kenny Blakeney also is a DeMatha graduate, played at Duke (1992-95) while Mike Brey was an assistant with the Blue Devils and was the head assistant coach under Brey at Delaware (2002-05). Former Notre Dame video coordinator and three-time team captain Eric Atkins is in his second year as an assistant on the Howard coaching staff.

The 2022 game wall also marks the return to the D.C. area for current Irish junior Prentiss Hubb (Upper Marlboro), who graduated from Gonzaga High School. Hubb is the latest Notre Dame stand out to call the Washington, D.C., area home, as the ‘D.C. Pipeline’ has included Austin Carr, Adrian Dantley, Jerian Grant, Bob Whitmore, Don Williams, Monty Williams, Collis Jones, Tracy Jackson, Tom Sluby, Sid Catlett and Notre Dame President Emeritus Rev. Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C.

Notre Dame has welcomed 10 different HBCUs to campus for 12 men’s basketball games throughout the program’s history. The trip to Howard will be the first road trip for the Irish to an HBCU and the first for an Atlantic Coast Conference team since Miami (Florida) played at Savannah State on December 19, 2013.

The contest marks the first against a Power Five Conference team for Howard at home since Oregon State visited Burr Gymnasium on November 27, 2010.

Notre Dame Basketball Player Review: Chris Doherty

Chris Doherty lasted six games with Notre Dame this season before deciding to leave the program and transfer in December.

For the next 11 days, we’ll be taking a look at what each player who suited up for Notre Dame men’s basketball did on the court. Even if the season didn’t go or end as planned, let’s give this gentlemen a proper sendoff for the 2019-20 season.

Sophomore power forward Chris Doherty lasted all of six games with Notre Dame this season before deciding to leave the program and transfer from the university in December. This, coupled with Robby Carmody’s ACL tear at the same time, left the Irish with very little depth, and they didn’t have much of it to begin with. Doherty never seemed comfortable with the program, as evidenced by him temporarily leaving the team before his freshman season even began. After returning, he struggled to find minutes all that season, and that trend continued this year before he decided he’d had enough, so the writing was on the wall for some time.

What little productivity the Marlborough, Massachusetts, native and former AAU teammate of Nate Laszewski had this season came during Notre Dame’s six-game winning streak that followed its season-opening loss to North Carolina. Doherty made his only field-goal attempt and also had a rebound, a steal and a block Nov. 12 vs. Howard. In his final game with the Irish (Nov. 26 vs. Farleigh Dickinson), he scored four points on 2-of-3 shooting and grabbed one offensive rebound.

It’s a shame Doherty didn’t work out in South Bend, but we wish him well in his future endeavors.

UT News: December 23, 2019

UT News: December 23, 2019

It’s almost Christmas Eve! As Santa is getting ready to bring presents to the Vols fans and spread coal around the rest of the SEC, I hope you are gearing up for the start of a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy the time with your family if you have it!

In the sports world, the big news is that UT men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes collected his 700th win. By now that really isn’t news, but it is worth a big congratulations. From me, sure, but it means a lot more from those involved in a video shared by Volunteer basketball on Twitter.

Rae Burrell led the Lady Vols to an 88-61 win over Portland State over the weekend. She scored a career high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, missing a double-double by just a hair. They will play again when Howard visits UT on Dec. 29.

That’s all I have for you. Have a safe and happy holiday! And once again, you don’t just have to take my word for it.
