Getting Quinn Ewers was hopefully just the first domino of top players coming to Austin. Here are five 2022 recruits Texas should push for.

Texas’ recruiting class for the 2022 class has started off on a fantastic foot, landing four-star wide receiver Phaizon Wilson and five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Of course, Ewers is the big name that everyone in the country has taken notice of. Coaches, fellow 2022 recruits, and even a current Texas A&M player have expressed how big of a commitment Ewers is for the Texas program.

Now, Tom Herman and his recruiting staff must take the opportunity to push for another top-five recruiting class. Getting Ewers was hopefully just the first domino of many top players coming to Austin in the 2022 class.

Texas Football: Tom Herman discusses 2020 season expectations

Tom Herman was asked what the standard was for the 2020 season. He responded, saying to be “competing for and winning Big 12 championships.”

When Tom Herman was brought to Texas in 2017, it had been eight years since the Longhorns were serious contenders for a Big 12 championship. Going into year four, Herman has yet to make Texas a conference contender year in and year out.

The 2018 season is the only year in which Texas has even made the Big 12 championship, losing out to arch-rivals Oklahoma. Last season was a disappointment, going 7-5 in the regular season and watching the Sooners win a fifth straight conference title.

After Saturday’s scrimmage, Herman was asked what the standard was for the upcoming season. His response was what it always has been, for Texas to be “competing for and winning Big 12 championships.”

If there has been a season during Herman’s tenure to compete for a conference championship, it is 2020.

Senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger is a big factor in those expectations. The Austin native is coming into his third full season of being the starting quarterback and is arguably the best in the Big 12. His experience and talent are going to go a long way, especially in a brand new offensive system.

However, what the Longhorns missed out on dearly last season was experience on the defensive side of the ball. Now, nine starters return, including Jack Joesph Ossai and safety Caden Sterns. In a conference dominated by offensive talent, the Longhorns’ defense was not up to a championship level standard.

Even during weird times in college football, Texas should be a top contender in the Big 12 at a minimum. Herman has expressed that is the goal of the program every single year.

Now, it is time for delivery. A normal Big 12 schedule will be played for the Longhorns, even if the order is mixed up from the original one. Not only playing at AT&T Stadium in December should be the goal but winning the game as well.

Three Texas players being evaluated for injuries

Three UT players left the scrimmage with injuries. Juwan Mitchell and Al’Vonte Woodard had head injuries and Troy Omerie with a knee issue.

Texas got back to playing football on Saturdays, having an offense vs defense scrimmage. Head coach Tom Herman thought “it was very balanced” and “the defense wound up winning it.”

Unfortunately, there were three different Longhorns who sustained injuries during the matchup.

Starting with linebacker Juwan Mitchell and wide receiver Al’Vonte Woodard, the two had to be helped off the field with head injuries. Herman described them as “stingers” and both are doing well.

“Juwan Mitchell and Al’Vonte Woodard had to be kind of helped off the field,” Herman said. “Nothing serious, it looks like both of them have a stinger or head issue, but (they were) fully functional and everything checked out well.

Losing Mitchell for any amounts of time would be a serious blow to Texas’ defense. The Longhorns are going to be reliant on the junior to anchor the middle of the linebacking core, a group that could serve as the defense’s biggest unknown.

As for Woodard, according to Herman, it seems as if the wide receiver is going to be ok. The former four-star prospect out of Houston is hoping to earn more playing time during his sophomore season.

The third and final injury was suffered by freshman wide receiver Troy Omerie.

“Towards the end, Troy Omeire kind of tweaked his knee a little bit, non-contact just running a route and kind of caught the turf a little bit awkwardly, so we’ll be evaluating him this afternoon.”

Omerie has been a fall camp standout, impressing his teammates and coaches. Coming from Sugar Land, Texas, the freshman was a top 50 wide receiver in the 2020 recruiting class.

Injuries are bound to happen, especially after taking a longer than usual break thanks to COVID-19. Hopefully, all three players are able to recover quickly and rejoin the team on the practice field.

Top 2022 recruit from Louisiana puts Texas in top 12

Will Campbell, the top player from the state of Louisiana in the 2022 recruiting class, has put the Longhorns in this top 12 schools.

TCU and Oklahoma join Texas as the only other Big 12 schools for the elite prospect.

NFL Draft: Draft Wire lists Keaontay Ingram No. 11 running back

Keaontay Ingram will be eligible to leave Austin for the NFL after this season. In Draft Wire’s latest RB projections, Ingram is No. 11.

Keaontay Ingram had a breakout season last year, solidifying himself as a top running back in the Big 12. Only a sophomore, Ingram will now have at least one more season to prove himself before the NFL Draft.

Going into his junior year, Ingram will be eligible to leave Austin for the NFL after this season. In Draft Wire’s latest running back projections, 10 others rank ahead of Ingram, including two others from the Big 12.

No. 11 seems about right for Ingram, who is coming off a season with 853 yards and six touchdowns. His numbers fluctuated game to game, having as many as 139 yards against Kansas State, and having as little as nine yards against Oklahoma and Iowa State.

However, when this season is all said and done, he could be closer to the top five.

Ingram is projecting to get a massive bump in terms of production going into this season. Without a doubt, he is going to be Texas’ starting running back with Roschon Johnson and Bijan Robinson behind him. Even with the pressure of those two, Ingram is going to be the main back.

Another thing exciting about Ingram and his potential is his running backs coach, Stan Drayton. Former Ohio State and current Dallas Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliot explained how Drayton developed and help him become the elite player he is today before getting drafted in 2016.

Drayton was a hot commodity this summer as well, with Mike McCarthy wanting to hire him as his running backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

Ingram will be looking to take an even bigger leap going into the 2020 season, trying to become the best running back in the conference. Having competition behind him may hurt his numbers but will help his development before the NFL Draft.

Texas has offered another in-state prospect, this time heading north to Dallas. Jack Leyrer is a three-star tackle in the 2022 class.

Texas has offered another in-state prospect, this time heading north to Dallas. Jack Leyrer is a three-star tackle in the 2022 recruiting class. Coming out of Highland Park High Schools, 2020 prospect Prince Dorbah also attending Highland Park.

Texas was offer No. 32 for Leyrer, including three other Big 12 schools. Baylor, Iowa State, and Texas Tech have reached out to the high school junior.

Current Texas A&M tight end advises others to commit to Texas

Current Texas A&M player Blake Smith gave Tom Herman recruiting fuel, saying he would commit to Texas if he was a wide receiver.

Texas and Tom Herman landed their biggest recruit ever in Quinn Ewers on Friday afternoon. The No. 1 prospect in the country in the 2022 class, the Longhorns found their quarterback on the future in the Southlake Carroll prospect.

Of course, social media had crazy reactions to Texas’ new commit. The most eye-opening one, however, was a current Texas A&M player saying he would choose Texas if he was a recruit again.

Blake Smith was a part of the Aggies’ 2020 recruiting class, coming in as a three-star tight end. He also attended Southlake Carrol, the high school of Quinn Ewers.

Smith quote tweeted Ewers’ commitment post, saying “Congrats bro, business decision and if I was a WR/TE…I’d commit there with him. Just saying.”

The tweet was soon deleted from Smith’s account.

Very rarely do you ever see anyone telling recruits to commit to another school, let alone a Texas A&M player telling them to go to Texas.

The Longhorns and Aggies have maintained their rivalry off the field, battling it out in recruiting. Now, Tom Herman has an excellent weapon, telling in-state blue chips that even Texas A&M players think they should commit to Texas.

Blake Smith has some history with the top ranked recruit so this should comes little to no surprise that he would say it. Smith shared a video of just how electric his arm talent is.

With the addition of Ewers to the quarterback room, it appears the Red River Rivalry just became an arms race. Should be fun to watch once he gets on campus.

Texas Recruiting: Top ranked 2022 quarterback commits to Texas

The number one ranked quarterback in the country commits to Texas. Quinn Ewers is the number one recruit in the 2022 class.

The quarterback position has been one for years that the Longhorns haven’t had the same level of luck recruiting compared to other spots on the team. Since recruiting Vince Young and Colt McCoy, they haven’t been at that level. Garrett Gilbert was their last five-star quarterback and expected to fill the void left by McCoy, but he didn’t pan out and transferred.

The likes of Case McCoy, David Ash led mediocre teams. Many wondered how a high profile school such as Texas couldn’t find a top tier passer. Shane Buechele provided excitement but he wasn’t able to hold down the spot with Sam Ehlinger in the fold. However, attention now turns to life beyond Sam.

Ehlinger will move on following the season and many wonder who lead the team upon his departure. The Longhorns have Casey Thompson, Hudson Card and Ja’Quinden Jackson in house with Jalen Milroe en route. Could there be another name?

Quinn Ewers is the most sought after quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class. The number one overall prospect in the class could be a game changer for the Texas Longhorns. Ewers was named sophomore of the year by MaxPreps and those won’t be the only accolades that he will earn by the time he leaves Southlake Carroll.

With Ewers now in the fold, the battles starting in 2022 will be must watch TV. Ewers along with Milroe, Jackson and Card should be an intense battle for quarterback supremacy. By the time it happens Card or Jackson could be the starter but with a quarterback the caliber of Ewers, how long can they hold him off?

One Pac-12 coach believes all of FBS will cancel in due time

According to Washington Huskies head coach JImmy Lake, it is all just a matter of time before all of FBS cancels their season.

The Pac-12 canceled their 2020 football season on Monday, following the Big Ten. There has been controversy around the decision, with players and coaches from around the country feeling as if football can be played.

However, there is one head coach who feels like the ACC, Big 12, and SEC are heading in the same direction as the Big Ten and Pac-12.

Washington’s head coach Chris Petersen stepped down after the 2019 season and was replaced by defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake. The first-year head coach thinks the other three Power Five conferences will be heading down the same direction as the Pac-12.

“I believe all three other conferences are going to follow suit (canceling) in due time.”

The Big 12 took a major step towards playing on Wednesday, releasing its 2020 schedule. Commissioner Bob Bowlsby has done an excellent job making sure players and coaches are as safe as possible.

Given so many conversations have occurred between Bowlsby, student-athletes and medical staff it would be hard to fathom that they would change course now. At least not without new information being provided. As Bowlsby stated “reasonable people can disagree.” That seems to be the case here.

Provided that the three major conferences left proceed, then the questions comes about if there will be a College Football Playoff. The short answer being that seem poised to continue down that road. The committee has given no indication that they won’t move forward given the teams still planning on playing.

The commissioner did mention there is a call next week with the committee so they can hash out the plan. The next question that make come is will the future champion being considered legitimate? If you asked Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, he thinks so.

NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay pegs Samuel Cosmi in top 15

In his latest mock draft, ESPN’s Todd McShay projects Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi to the Denver Broncos.

One of my favorite moments of the year comes in April and May as college athletes get to realize their dream of playing in the NFL. For the Longhorns there are a group of players who are on the cusp of realizing that dream. Sam Ehlinger, Samuel Cosmi, Caden Sterns and Joseph Ossai could be well on their way to the NFL next season. Outside of Ehlinger, the other three will have decisions to make as they are still underclassmen.

In the latest mock draft from ESPN’s Todd McShay, he has one Longhorn being selected in the first round. No shock at at all who that name is as he has been widely speculated as Texas’ first opening round selection since 2015.

Denver invested in its Drew Lock-led offense over the past few months, adding receivers Jeudy and KJ Hamler and center Lloyd Cushenberry III with early draft picks, and signing guard Graham Glasgow and running back Melvin Gordon via free agency. But even before right tackle Ja’Wuan James opted out of the NFL season, tackle was a concern. Garett Bolles hasn’t been great and could be gone after this season. Cosmi brings 6-foot-7, 310-pound size with superb mobility. He still has to develop a bit, but he has the talent to emerge as a high-end left tackle. And if you want a glimpse of his athleticism and quickness, check out his 12-yard touchdown from last October.

The idea of Cosmi to the Broncos would make a ton of sense. Denver has invested a lot of capital into their weapons around quarterback Drew Lock. The team now needs to find a way to protect him. Cosmi is a player that has gotten better each and every year. He will be expected to do the same in 2020 protecting quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Denver feels like a good spot for Cosmi to land, provided he declares after the season.
