What did USA TODAY Sports have to say about the Texas Longhorns being ranked in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll?

Fall camp is finally here and with that it feels like Texas Longhorns football is so close we can almost taste it. One of the annual events of the preseason are the rankings. Media and fans alike love to pick apart the rankings with how they feel each college football team should be ranked. Texas came in 14th in the initial Amway Coaches Poll.

The first reaction by many is of course, who is overrated? According to Paul Myerburg, one of those teams would in fact be the Longhorns. Sure one could point to what the Longhorns lost and claim that they are overrated but they return their senior quarterback and key pieces around him. Factor in the new coordinators in Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash and that gives promise. Not to mention they added five-star recruits on both sides of the ball.

What USA TODAY Sports says about the Longhorns outlook

The USA TODAY Sports staff recently released their outlook on every one of the top 25 teams, they make valid points for the Longhorns.

It’s the question asked, mostly facetiously now, every August: Is Texas back? After a step back – the wrong way, in this sense — in 2019 compared to a Sugar Bowl win the season before, Tom Herman shook things up this offseason by firing his offensive and defensive coordinator, meaning Longhorns players are learning new schemes on both sides of the ball. QB Sam Ehlinger has thrown more yards than any other Power Five quarterback in the last two years, and there’s no shortage of receiving talent for him to target. LB Joseph Ossai returns after leading the team with 90 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. A trip to the Big 12 title game will be expected or pressure will mount on Herman.

The Longhorns head coach Tom Herman isn’t in the hot seat yet but if he fumbles the season (provided they play) then it will heat up.

Texas Football: Myron Warren has put his name in the transfer portal

According to a report from 247Sports and Chris Hummer, redshirt freshman Myron Warren has placed his name in the transfer portal.

The Texas Longhorns started fall camp on Friday and there is a sizable buzz around the defense. The defensive line with Joseph Ossai and company are expected to make a much larger impact in the 2020 season than they did a year ago. One of those players among the defensive line isn’t going to be there to help.

According to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, redshirt freshman defensive end Myron Warren has placed his name in the transfer portal.

Warren came to Austin as part of the Longhorns’ 2019 class and did not play last season. He ranked as the No. 289 overall player in the 247Sports Composite that cycle. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Louisiana native was expected to be a part of the Longhorns’ two-deep this season as a redshirt freshman, potentially backing up Ta’Quon Graham.

Coming out of Many, Louisiana Warren was the 17th ranked strong side defensive end in the country and 15th overall in the state of Louisiana. He would need a push to get into the rotation behind Ta’Quon Graham. Likely battling senior Marquez Bimage and the highly touted Alfred Collins for snaps. The four-star defensive end will begin talking with other schools about a potential landing spot ahead of the 2020 college football season.

In the past Tom Herman has been able to talk players out of the transfer portal. Most recently Anthony Cook and Juwan Mitchell both put their name in the portal before withdrawing. It isn’t a foregone conclusion that Warren will leave the program but it just might be a way to find out if there is a better situational fit for him in the NCAA.

Hometown: Racine, Wisconsin

High School: Racine Lutheran

JUCO ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 143 overall / No. 21 position / No. 10 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star

Analysis: Willie Tyler is a junior college transfer from Iowa Western Community College. Listed as an offensive tackle by 247sports, Tyler transferred to Texas over Louisiana Tech, Miami, SMU, and West Virginia.

In high school, Tyler spent most of his time playing defensive line and occasionally played offensive line. Once he got to Iowa Western, he transitioned to a full-time tackle, thanks to his 6-7 335 pound frame.

Tyler is the only person on the Texas roster from the state of Wisconsin. After redshirting his sophomore season, it is difficult to see the tackle getting playing time in 2020. Another project for offensive line coach Herb Hand, Tyler could see playing time as an upperclassman.

Three glaring questions surrounding Texas football ahead of fall camp

Texas begins their fall football camp on Friday. With new coordinators on each side of the ball, several questions remain.

As the Texas football program prepares to head into fall camp on Friday, there’s several intriguing storylines to take a look at.

It all starts with the two new coordinators on each side of the ball. Mike Yurcich has plenty of talented weapons at his disposal to have one of the most high-powered offenses in the country. But how will he use them?

Chris Ash has changed the defensive scheme entirely in hopes of creating a consistent pass rush. There’s no reason that Texas shouldn’t field the best defensive unit in the Big 12.

Several question marks surround this roster. Some may be answered throughout camp and practice reps, while others won’t be quite figured out until several games through the season. Longhorns Wire staff took a dive into three glaring questions that remain.

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 135 position / No. 195 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star

Analysis: Besides Sam Ehlinger, Samuel Cosmi is Texas’ most important offensive player, protecting the quarterback’s blindside. The left tackle had a breakout 2019 season, finishing second-team All-Big 12.

This upcoming season is going to be even bigger for Cosmi, as he is expected to be a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Only a three-star prospect coming out of high school, Herb Hand has done an outstanding job turning Cosmi into a top player in the country.

In 27 career games, Cosmi has started in 26 of them. According to PFF, the tackle has only given up four sacks in 1,162 passing block snaps. Cosmi is essential to Texas’ offensive flow, making sure Ehlinger can display his talents in the passing game.
