CBSSports names ideal landing spot for former Georgia RB Todd Gurley

CBS Sports names ideal landing spot for Todd Gurley

There hasve been plenty of discussions this offseason as to where former Georgia running back Todd Gurley, who is currently an NFL free agent, will play during the 2021 season.

CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan recently wrote on which team he thinks would be the ideal destination for the former NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

Sullivan named the Los Angeles Chargers as the suggested landing spot for Gurley, who previously spent one year with the Atlanta Falcons in 2020 after playing his full career with the Los Angeles Rams.

This offseason, the Detroit Lions were said to be in pursuit of Gurley, but no deal has yet to be struck. If he doesn’t end up in the Motor City, the Chargers could be a fun landing spot. While Austin Ekeler is the clear No. 1 back, the Chargers may not want him to go in-between the tackles as a bruising back on a week-to-week basis and open him up to injury. That’s where Gurley could come in and provide some relief with his 6-foot-1, 224-pound frame. He’d be a complementary piece to an offense that could take a massive leap as quarterback Justin Herbert heads into Year 2 of his career.

Gurley was at one time the league’s best running back, but he has rapidly declined since his knee started giving him issues. But there’s no doubt the former Georgia Bulldog can still provide value to a team and remains very productive in the red zone.

UGA’s fourth all-time leading rusher ran for 678 yards on 195 carries (3.5 avg.) and nine touchdowns, while adding another 164 yards on 25 catches in his one season in Atlanta.

Gurley has battled knee arthritis since his time with the Rams. With L.A., Gurley was one of the best running backs in the NFL. The Tarboro, N.C., native was named offensive rookie of the year in 2015, offensive player of the year in 2017, along with two First-Team All-Pro selections and three Pro Bowl appearances in five seasons.

While Gurley did not produce in Atlanta like he did for the Rams, the Falcons troubles may have contributed to the low numbers. Atlanta ranked 26th in the league in run offense last season. With the right scheme and fit, Gurley could blossom once again.

Report: Former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley visits AFC team

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that former Georgia football running back Todd Gurley, current NFL free agent, visited with the Baltimore Ravens.

UGA great and current NFL free agent Todd Gurley visited with the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Gurley, the former NFL Offensive Player of the Year with the Los Angeles Rams, was at one time the league’s best running back, but has since rapidly declined after his knee started giving him issues.

But there’s no doubt that the former Georgia Bulldog can still provide value to a team and remains very productive in the red zone.

Gurley, 26, is coming off of a one-year stint with the Atlanta Falcons after spending his first five seasons in the league with the L.A. Rams.

If Gurley is to join the Ravens, he would be pairing up with superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson in Baltimore as well as second year running back and Ohio State great JK Dobbins.

Falcon’s GM comfortable with former Georgia star Todd Gurley’s knee injuries

Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff talks about newly signed former Georgia football running back Todd Gurley’s knee injuries.

Atlanta Falcons beat reporter Kelsey Conway recently spoke to the franchise’s general manager Thomas Dimitroff about newly signed running back Todd Gurley.

The former Georgia Bulldog recently signed a one-year contract worth $6m with the Falcons after being released earlier this year by the L.A. Rams.

Gurley was a two-time All-Pro in L.A. but after issues with arthritis in his previously injured left-knee, the team decided to move on from the 24-year old.

Unlike the Rams, the Falcons do not seem to be worried about Gurley’s injury history.

Dimitroff said:

He really takes care of his body well. We feel very comfortable with it. He’s a hard-charging runner and we’re counting on him being an excellent player for us.

Gurley being on just a one-year deal creates an easy out for Atlanta if he can’t meet expectations in 2020, but Falcons and UGA fans hope the Bulldog great can bounce back with a great season for Atlanta.

Former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley: “I got fired on my day off”

Gurley was two years into a contract with the Los Angeles Rams that included a $21 million signing bonus and $45 million in guarantees.

Following rumors of the Los Angeles Rams’ intention to trade tailback Todd Gurley, the organization decided to cut the former Georgia Bulldog standout the day before the team would’ve been contractually obligated to pay their 2014 first-round draft pick another $10.5 million.

L.A. will save $10.5 million against the cap. The Rams failed to find a trade destination; Gurley will now be free to sign with the team of his choosing for the first time in his NFL career.

Gurley, now a free agent, is free to find his own best fit.

Gurley didn’t seem blindsided and took the news in stride.

Several former teammates and competitors (along with Bulldogs and Rams faithful) provided predictions as to how Gurley’s future could and should unfold in coming weeks.

Todd Gurley not a fan of his recent play being labeled ‘vintage’

Georgia football great and LA Rams superstar RB Todd Gurley is not a fan of his play being called “vintage Todd” by his QB Jared Goff.

The Los Angeles Rams have been doing what they should have done for the past year: feeding their all-pro running back.

Todd Gurley’s knee and his lack of playing time has been one of the most talked about head-scratchers since the Rams’ Super Bowl loss to the Patriots where Gurley was basically irrelevant.

This season, Gurley has been used, but significantly less than one would expect from a player of his caliber.

Until recently, that is. The past few weeks, head coach Sean McVay has been feeding his workhorse the rock and letting Gurley get after it. When healthy, there may not be anybody better at carrying the football than the Georgia great.

Last week, in a win over the Seattle Seahawks, Gurley scored a touchdown that featured an absolutely nasty stiff arm.

When referencing Gurley’s recent level of play and when discussing the above stiff arm, Rams quarterback Jared Goff referred to the run as “vintage Todd.”

That did not sit well with Gurley.

“Sounds like I suck and then made a good play,” Gurley said when mentioning the “vintage” label. “Not my first time stiff-arming nobody. Just a regular stiff-arm.”

Also, since Gurley has seen decreased playing time, he has been nothing but cool about it in the media. He would often make remarks noting that it’s a team sport and that the best players play.

From this quote below, I sense he’s done with that.

He knows what he’s capable of and he knows the team benefits when he touches the ball 25 times a game.

“You don’t really have to explain too much,” Gurley said, via Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times. “You see the results over the last couple of years, when you’re running the ball, stuff is going well, stuff is opening up, so it’s like, not too much really to explain.”

For McVay, if he wants any shot at making the playoffs this season, a goal they are close to accomplishing, he knows what needs to be done.

Prepare for big Gurley numbers down the stretch.

Todd Gurley congratulates former coach Mike Bobo on SC job

Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley congratulates former coach Mike Bobo on new South Carolina offensive coordinator job

Will Muschamp and the South Carolina Gamecocks stole a good one right in front of Kirby Smart and the Dawgs.

As if beating Georgia in Athens wasn’t enough, Muschamp added insult to injury and hired Colorado State head coach and former UGA offensive coordinator and alumni, Mike Bobo.

Bobo spent 14 years on the Georgia coaching staff, 8 of those as the OC.  He played a major role in developing a lot of legendary offensive players at UGA.

One of those players, former Georgia running back Todd Gurley, sent a congrats to Bobo on the new position, even if he’s now a division rival.

Some people found this hire as a shock, as Smart and Bobo’s relationship has always been rock solid.  Bobo was the best man at Smart’s wedding believe it or not.

The South Carolina coaching staff now consists of a few too many Georgia alumni to be comfortable Muschamp and Bobo being two of them.
