Magic at Grizzlies: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 9:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Magic 112, Grizzlies 107

Moneyline (ML)

The MAGIC (+125) are the value play in this one. These teams met back on Nov. 8 with Orlando winning by a 118-86 score. The Grizzlies (-150) look for revenge, but both teams have been hot lately, and the better value is taking Orlando at plus-money.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Magic returns a profit of $12.50 if they win. A $10 bet on the Grizzlies returns a profit of $6.70.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The MAGIC (+2.5, -106) give you a little bit of insurance if you’re feeling the Grizzlies (-2.5, -115) are going to win by a narrow margin. Orlando has covered in six straight games, and seven of the past eight games overall. The Magic are also 4-0 in their past four games as an underdog. The Grizzlies are also hot against the number, going 6-1 ATS in their past seven at home, but remember the November meeting.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total (220.5) is a risky play in this one, as the trends are skewed heavily in opposite directions. For instance, the Over is 12-3-1 in Orlando’s past 16, and 5-0 in its past five as an underdog while going 11-0-1 in the past 12 following a cover. The Under is 11-0 in the past 11 home games for Memphis, while going 6-0 in its past six overall and 5-1 in the past six as a favorite. The best course of action is to AVOID.

Report: Memphis Grizzlies waiving former Warriors forward Jordan Bell

Former Golden State big man Jordan Bell is looking for a new team after being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies.

After a stellar start to his career with the Golden State Warriors, Jordan Bell is looking for a new team. The 25-year old big man has been waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

As a junior in college, Bell led the Oregon Ducks to a Final Four appearance and was later drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the second round of the 2017 NBA draft. On draft night, the Bulls traded Bell to Golden State for $3.5 million in cash considerations.

During the Warriors 2017-18 championship season, Bell started 13 games as a rookie, averaging 4.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in 14.2 minutes per game.

Bell used his explosive athletic ability for multiple highlight-reel moments during his first season with Golden State, including an off the backboard dunk against the Dallas Mavericks.

However, he could never match his numbers following his rookie season. In the 2019 offseason, Bell signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, leaving Golden State.

After averaging only 8.7 minutes per contest in 27 games with the Timberwolves, Bell was moved to the Memphis Grizzlies before the 2020 NBA trade deadline for Bruno Caboclo and a 2023 second-round draft pick swap.

In Memphis, Bell linked with his former college teammate Dillon Brooks. However, the Oregon reunion didn’t last long. The Grizzlies waived Bell after two games.

With around 20 games remaining in the season, Bell will be searching for an opportunity to prove he belongs in the NBA into the future.

Grizzlies at Wizards: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Grizzlies 126, Wizards 116

Moneyline (ML)

The GRIZZLIES (-129) are a nice play on the road, as they look to replicate the success they had Dec. 14 when they topped the Wizards (+105) by a 128-111 score in Memphis. The Grizz will be in even better shape if they get newly acquired G Jordan Bell and C Gorgui Dieng in the mix.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (-1.5, -115) are a better play laying the points, as you won’t have to pay as much juice. Memphis is 5-0 ATS in the past five games as a favorite, 6-2 ATS in the past eight games overall and 4-1 ATS in the previous five against teams with a losing record. They’re also 8-3-1 ATS in the past 12 while working on one day of rest.

For the Wizards (+1.5, -106), they’re 4-1 ATS in the past five at home, but just 3-7 ATS in the past 10 after a straight-up win and 4-9 ATS in the past 13 following a cover.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 239.5 (-106) is a super high line, but it’s worth a small-unit play. The Over is 5-0 in the past five on the road for Memphis, and 4-1 in the past five overall. The Over is 7-1 in the past eight for Washington, too, and 6-1 in the past seven as a dog.

Prediction

Grizzlies 125, Pistons 108

Moneyline (ML)

The Grizzlies (-357) are a little more expensive than I like on the moneyline, even though they’re a solid play at home against a team which just played Sunday afternoon and had to travel. AVOID.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (-7.5, -110) are the play on their home floor, as the Pistons (+7.5, -110) should have some tired legs after edging the Denver Nuggets in overtime back in Detroit Sunday afternoon before traveling. Look for Memphis to handle its business at home and bounce back after a disappointing loss last time out in New Orleans Friday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 227.5 (-110) is worth a look due to a handful of factors. First, the Pistons traveled after going to overtime Sunday afternoon against the Nuggets. Their legs should be plenty tired, leading to some shaky defense. Plus, these teams may or may not have enjoyed some Super Bowl festivities on television, and don’t think that won’t play a factor in their energy level on defense, too.

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:35 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Pelicans 112, Grizzlies 111

Moneyline (ML)

The PELICANS (-222) are the play at home. They’re five games out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference, but with F Zion Williamson easing into the lineup for the stretch run, hope springs eternal in the Crescent City. The Grizzlies (+180) are hanging onto the eighth spot in the West right now, and they enter on a four-game winning streak, including victories in each of their past two outings.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (+5.5, -115) are worth a look catching points in the Big Easy. Not only are they on a four-game winning streak, but they’re 4-0 ATS during the span, too, and 18-7-1 ATS across the past 26 overall. Memphis has also covered four of the past five games on the road. The Grizz will be looking to avenge a 126-116 loss at FedExForum back on Jan. 20, and that was before Zion made his debut.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 239.5 (+100) is the play in this battle of southern rivals. The Under is 7-2 across the past nine games for the Grizzlies, including that Jan. 20 meeting which had a line of 242.5. That game actually hit the Under by just a half-point. Expect fewer points, with better defense for NOLA with Zion in the middle.

Prediction

Grizzlies 119, Knicks 110

Moneyline (ML)

Grizzles-Knicks is the second game of a back-to-back for both teams. Memphis beat the Denver Nuggets 104-96 and the Knicks squandered a 13-point lead in a 97-92 loss to the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday. The Grizzlies have performed much better than the Knicks with zero rest days—Memphis is 4-2 with a 2-point margin of victory and New York is 1-5 with a minus-18.7 margin of victory in such situations. Team basketball is the key to the Grizzlies’ success as they have four starters above 15 points per game, are ranked third in passes made and first in assists per game.

It would be a massive letdown for the Grizzlies to lose against the lowly Knicks given their recent hot streak and a win in this game would make them .500 for the first time this season. Memphis is currently on a three-game winning streak and has won 10 of their last 12 games whereas the Knicks are just 4-11 in January. Also, New York struggles against fast-paced teams and Memphis is ranked fifth in the NBA in Pace. Against top-10 ranked teams in Pace, the Knicks are 4-10 losing, on average, 116-109.

HAMMER GRIZZLIES (-143) on the moneyline.

New to sports betting? Bet $143 on the Grizzlies to earn a $100 profit if they win outright.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

I lean toward the Grizzlies (-2.5, -115) but officially, we will PASS on an against the spread wager in Grizzlies-Knicks. There isn’t much benefit to betting the Grizzlies line if you’re laying -115, so dump your NBA betting allowance on the Grizzlies on the moneyline.

Over/Under (O/U)

TAKE OVER 224.5 (+105) in Grizzlies-Knicks. We are on the Grizzlies to win outright so logic says the game will most likely be played at their tempo. Memphis has an Over/Under record of 5-1 with zero days off. Of course, we expect the Grizzlies to put up points going against a New York team ranked 24th by defensive rating and 30th in opponent 3-point percentage. The Knicks offense should be able to get buckets against a Grizzlies defense giving up 115.4 points per game. As stated above, the average score of Knicks games when going against top-10 paced teams is 225.

Nuggets at Grizzlies: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Grizzlies 111, Nuggets 107

Moneyline (ML)

The GRIZZLIES (-106) are short dogs at home in a battle of red-hot teams. The Nuggets (-115) are slightly favored but roll with the Grizz on their home floor, as they have really been playing well lately, winning 10 of their past 12 games overall.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The GRIZZLIES (+1.5, -115) are a little more expensive catching a point and a half, but if you like the Grizz, the way to go is on the moneyline at a cheaper price. If you like the Nuggets (-1.5, -106) then you’ll want to lay the points instead of betting the moneyline favorite.

Denver has won each of the two meetings this season, and it has won four in a row against Memphis; however, the Grizzlies are 9-3 ATS in their past 12 at home and 8-3 ATS in the past 11 overall while going 3-1-1 ATS in the previous five against winning teams. Plus, the Nuggets are 1-4 ATS in the past five trips to Memphis.

Over/Under (O/U)

The trends for both sides show the UNDER 224.5 (-106) is the way to go. The Under has connected in five straight at home for the Grizzlies, and six of the past seven overall. The Under is also 9-3 in their past 12 games against winning teams.

For the Nuggets, the Under is 4-1 in their past five on the road, and 7-3 in their past 10 games overall. The Under is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in Memphis and 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in this series.

Grizzlies at Pistons: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Grizzlies 123, Pistons 116

Moneyline (ML)

The Grizzlies have recently cooled off, losing two straight games, after a recent seven-game winning streak. Conversely Detroit has won three out of their past four games including a 127-106 blistering of the Sacramento Kings on Jan. 22. Where Memphis has a major advantage in this matchup is in the interior:  the Grizzlies score the most points in the paint per game and the Pistons give up the sixth-most points in the paint per game. Furthermore, the Grizzlies are only ranked 16th in rebounds per game but rank 12th in opponent’s rebounds per game and the Pistons rank dead last in rebounds per game.

HAMMER GRIZZLIES -106.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Despite a litany of injuries and the much-needed revival of Derrick Rose, Detroit is surprisingly in the mix for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. But, the Pistons might be a little starved tonight from a lack of home cooking; home teams are 36-49-1 ATS this season when this officiating crew is reffing the game. Though the Grizzlies-Pistons only play twice a year, Memphis has played well in Detroit recently—Grizzlies are 13-3 against the spread in the last 16 meetings in Detroit. Plus the Grizzlies are slightly better ATS on the road against below .500 teams (5-5) compared to the Pistons at home against below .500 teams (6-8 ATS record). Also, and most importantly, the Pistons are 17-27-1 ATS on the season.

However, since we are on the Grizzlies to win outright and there’s a minuscule line in Grizzlies-Pistons, PASS ON AN ATS WAGER.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET OVER 229.5 (-115) because the matchup edge discussed above, the Grizzlies terrible defense and the Pistons 27-18 over/under record on the year. Throw-in the facts that Memphis is seventh in field goal percentage and 25th in opponents’ three-point percentage, while Detroit is 27th in opponents’ field goal percentage and fourth in three-point percentage, the Over in Grizzlies-Pistons is the only play here.

Andre Iguodala breaks down the Clippers and Lakers rosters

Iguodala thinks both teams have what it takes to win a title

Andre Iguodala technically plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, but you wouldn’t be able to tell if you weren’t paying attention.

He’s been laying low this season since the Warriors traded him to Memphis after Kevin Durant dipped and went to the Nets this summer. He’s been on a book tour, done some work in tech and has conducted a handful of interviews.

But now he’s finally back to talking basketball again. Iguodala paid a visit to First Take on Friday to talk about what he’s been doing and the state of the NBA.

Since he was traded to Memphis, he’s been one of the names that have been consistently connected to the Lakers and Clippers — two of the teams at the top of the West.

The problem is he’s currently stuck in a stalemate with the Grizzlies, who can either buy him out or trade him.

Iguodala makes $17.2 million this season and has said that he won’t be bought out for any less, but the Grizzlies refuse to buy his deal out with such a hefty price tag.

Meanwhile, trading him is difficult because of the money he makes. Whatever team trades for him has to send a similar amount of money back to the Grizzlies. That means they either send a player with a big contract over or they packaged together a number of smaller deals to add up to an appropriate amount. Either way, the team is losing depth, so it’s difficult to see a trade happening.

So when they asked Iguodala which team he’d want to play for, instead of actually making a choice he broke both of them down by their strengths.

“It’s picking your poison. I mean, you know, in terms of you having the poison and you being able to shoot that whichever way you want against your opponent.”

Smart man. It’s best to play this diplomatically for him at this point — he still has no idea where he’s going to end up. First thing is first, though. Get this man out of Memphis, ASAP.

Celtics defeat Grizzlies in 119-95 rout to pick up second straight win

Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 23 points in the team’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

The Boston Celtics have one of the most balanced offenses in the NBA, with most players having ample opportunities to score.

That balanced attack proved beneficial Wednesday night as the Celtics defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 119-95, to pick up a second straight win. Six players scored in double figures, and Celtics forward Jayson Tatum scored a team-high 23 points on 50% shooting from the field.

Per Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, Tatum left the game in the third quarter with a right groin strain.

According to John Karalis of MassLive.com, Jaylen Brown was out with an ankle sprain. With Brown out, the Celtics needed someone to fill the scoring void. Brown is the Celtics’ third-leading scorer. Daniel Theis was second behind Tatum in scoring, as he totaled 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and had three blocks.

Gordon Hayward and Marcus Smart both scored 12 points, and Enes Kanter and Brad Wanamaker combined for 23 points off the bench.

The Celtics had a quality shooting performance, as they shot 50.6% from the field and 43.8% from the 3-point line. A 41-point third quarter was the height of their offensive outburst.

Another key facet of the win was the Celtics’ defense. Rookie phenom Ja Morant was held to a season-low two points, and Dillon Brooks, the Grizzlies’ third-leading scorer, scored six points on 1-of-6 shooting from the field.

The Celtics will look to extend their win streak to three games Friday on the road against the Orlando Magic.
