Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 9

Today’s installment focuses on the 15 players who wore No. 9 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 15 players who wore No. 9 over the years as of September 2023.

On this day: Wilkins, James sign; Wanamaker, Krstić, Olsen born

Former Celtics Dominique Wilkins and Mike James signed with Boston today, and Brad Wanamaker, Nenad Krstić and Bud Olsen were born today.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, Hall of Fame small forward Dominique Wilkins signed with the Celtics in free agency in 1994. The Human Highlight Film — as Wilkins had come to be called for his frequent, flashy dunks — went on to win a gold medal in the 1994 World Championship of Basketball with the so-called “Dream Team 2” before joining the team in the fall.

Wilkins would play but one season with the Celtics, putting up a very respectable 17.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in his age-35 season, displaying an exceptionally rare high-level longevity.

After the season was over, Wilkins would head overseas to play for Greek club Panathinaikos, with whom he would win a EuroLeague championship.

Warriors cap 2021 NBA trade deadline with two deals, moving Marquese Chriss and Brad Wanamaker

Before the NBA trade deadline closed, the Warriors moved Brad Wanamaker to the Charlotte Hornets and Marquese Chriss to the San Antonio Spurs.

With a flurry of moves going down throughout the final day of the NBA trade deadline day, the Golden State Warriors were mostly quiet. Despite being linked to a bevy of players like Aaron Gordon, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Danny Green, the trade deadline passed without the Warriors sealing a blockbuster addition.

However, within the final minutes of the deadline, the Warriors completed a pair of trades. The Warriors dealt veteran guard Brad Wanamaker to the Charlotte Hornets for cash considerations. Following a deal with the Hornets, the Warriors traded Marquesse Chriss to the San Antonio Spurs for Cady Lalanne.

In 37 games, Wanamaker averaged 4.7 points on 35.3% shooting from the field with 2.5 assists and 1.7 rebounds per contest. The veteran guard struggled to get into a rhythm from deep with Golden State, shooting 21.3% from beyond the arc in the 2020-21 campaign. With rookie phenom LaMelo Ball injured, Wanamaker will have the opportunity to compete for minutes behind Devonte’ Graham in Charlotte.

During a down season for the Warriors in 2019-20, Marquese Chriss shined as one of the lone bright spots. After getting invited to Golden State’s training camp, Chriss turned a non-guaranteed deal into a two-way contract that later turned into a full-time NBA contract. The Washington Huskies product tallied 9.3 points on 54.5% shooting from the field with 6.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 blocks per contest in his first season with Golden State.

The former first-round pick was limited to only two games in 2020-21 after suffering a fractured right fibula early in the campaign.

After dealing Chriss to San Antonio, the Warriors acquired a 28-year-old forward in the deal. Lalanne was drafted 55th overall in the 2015 NBA draft by the Spurs after four seasons with the University of Massachusetts. The Warriors will hold Lalanne’s rights as he currently plays for the Changwon LG Sakers in the Korean Basketball League.

Following the trade deadline, two of Golden State’s precious roster sports are now vacant. The Warriors will now have the opportunity to be active in the buyout market or convert the two-way contracts of Nico Mannion and Juan Toscano-Anderson into full-time NBA deals.

During the fourth quarter, Brad Wanamaker hit Andrew Wiggins for a lob dunk to put an exclamation point on the Warriors’ win over the Cavs.

Former Celtic Brad Wanamaker pens a farewell note for fans on Twitter

Fare thee well, Brad Wanamaker — you will be missed.

Former Boston Celtics reserve point guard Brad Wanamaker thanked Celtics fans on Twitter after signing a one-year, $2.25 million deal to join the Golden State Warriors on Saturday afternoon.

The two-year NBA veteran came over from Europe to join Boston at the start of the 2018-19 season, and averaged 5.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.2 points per game as a Celtic, leading the league in free throw percentage rate this last season.

In his Twitter farewell message, the Pitt product opened up about his time wearing green and white, where he played a larger role than intended over the last two seasons with professionalism.

“Appreciate you Boston!” began the Philadelphia native.

“Signed my first and second lol NBA contracts with a great organization. Loved hooping with all my teammates and coaches I came across my two season there, wish you guys all the best going forward and I’ll always be grateful for my time there.”

Wanamaker might never have been the flashiest player on the team, the best shot or highest scorer.

But, he was a rock when it came to doing his job for a team that has had a roller coaster ride of a lifetime while he was on its roster.

You will be missed, Brad Wanamaker — fare thee well.

Report: Former Celtics guard Brad Wanamaker to join Golden State Warriors on one-year deal

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Golden State Warriors are signing free-agent guard Brad Wanamaker to a one-year contract.

After reportedly agreeing to acquire Kelly Oubre Jr. from the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Golden State Warriors have turned their attention to the guard position.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Warriors are signing free-agent guard Brad Wanamaker to a one-year, $2.25 million deal. Wanamaker spent the last two seasons coming off the bench for the Boston Celtics.

On Friday, a slot in Golden State’s backcourt opened up when the team waived reserve point guard Ky Bowman after one season in the Bay Area.

During Boston’s 2019-20 campaign, Wanamaker averaged 6.9 points on 44.8% shooting from the field with 2.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game. Wanamaker registered minutes in all of Boston’s postseason games in the Orlando Bubble, averaging 4.9 points on 48.3% shooting from the field with 1.8 assists.

Via @wojespn on Twitter:

After going undrafted in the 2011 NBA Draft out of Pittsburgh, Wanamaker played from 2011-2018 in Europe. While playing internationally, Wanamaker earned a bevy of accolades, including German Basketball Bundesliga Most Valuable Player in 2016 with Brose Bamberg Baskets. At 31-years-old, Wanamaker will enter his third consecutive in the association.

In two seasons in the NBA, Wanamaker has played 107 games, averaging 5.9 points on 45.4% shooting from the field with 2.2 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per contest.

With the ability to play either position in the backcourt, Wanamaker will likely slide in behind Stephen Curry in the second unit. Along with much-needed depth, Wanamaker will provide another level of veteran consistency next to Jordan Poole and Damion Lee.

Grading the Boston Celtics’ 2019-20 season by player, part 2: the bench

In our second installment grading the seasons of the 2019-20 Boston Celtics, we focus on the veterans coming off of the bench.

With the offseason in full swing for the Boston Celtics, we’re back with our second installment of our three-part series grading the team’s 2019-20 season on a player-by-player basis.

In this edition, we shift our attention to the veterans off of the bench, having a different set of standards than we did for the first installment of the series, on the team’s historically large seven-man rookie class.

With this group of Celtics, we expect more — more scoring, more defensive prowess, and more growth than we did of the rookies.

With five such players on the roster, Boston ought to have had a fairly solid bench, but as evidenced by the team’s early exit from the 2020 NBA Playoffs, there will be a few bad grades to give out.
