Lakers buyout target Goran Dragic signs with Nets

The Los Angeles Lakers will not be signing veteran guard Goran Dragic.

Veteran guard Goran Dragic is signing with the Brooklyn Nets, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, so the Los Angeles Lakers will not be landing him.

Los Angeles was named a suitor for Dragic after the 35-year-old guard agreed to a buyout with the San Antonio Spurs after the Toronto Raptors traded him.

Dragic was part of the trade that brought Kyle Lowry to the Miami Heat, but Dragic played just five games with Toronto and a departure was inevitable.

The Lakers have now lost out on Dragic and Tristan Thompson, who is slated to sign with the Chicago Bulls.

Report: Nets to sign veteran guard Goran Dragic from buyout market

The Brooklyn Nets will sign veteran guard Goran Dragic from the buyout market.

The All-Star break is over and for the Brooklyn Nets, the goal is to now get themselves together and prepare for the playoffs.

They swung their big deal at the deadline when they sent James Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ben Simmons, Seth Curry, and Andre Drummond, and now it is time to add to their depth and prepare for what they hope will be a deep run into the playoffs.

Needing another ball-handler, the team will sign 13-year veteran guard Goran Dragic to a deal. Dragic spent the previous 6.5 seasons with the Miami Heat before being sent to the Toronto Raptors and he only played in five games for Toronto. He has career averages of 13.9 points and 4.8 assists and he was named an All-Star for the Heat in 2018.

Dragic, of course, played with coach Steve Nash when they were both a member of the Phoenix Suns. He also has NBA finals experience with the Heat in 2020 although he only played in two of the six games due to injury.

Report: Lakers named a suitor for Goran Dragic after buyout

The Los Angeles Lakers will reportedly be a suitor for Goran Dragic after his contract is bought out by the San Antonio Spurs.

After not making any trades at the deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers have only the buyout market as a means to improve.

More names will hit the buyout market in the coming weeks, and it looks like one will be available soon. Goran Dragic, whom the San Antonio Spurs acquired from the Toronto Raptors, is on his way to becoming a free agent.

When his contract is bought out, the Lakers have been named a suitor, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN:

The San Antonio Spurs and Goran Dragic are expected to negotiate a contract buyout in the coming week, clearing the way for a formidable list of free-agent suitors for Dragic that now includes the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, sources told ESPN.

The Lakers are joining a list of teams in the Dragic pursuit:

The Lakers and Warriors are planning to join several rivals, including the LA Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets, in aggressive pursuit of Dragic, sources said.

The Miami Heat moved Dragic over the summer in a trade to acquire Kyle Lowry, but Dragic played just five games with Toronto. He’s a career 36.4% 3-point shooter, and his playmaking would be a boost to the guard rotation.

The major drawback for L.A. is that other teams have a better chance to contend for a ring, so let’s see if LeBron James and Anthony Davis are enough to lure the 35-year-old guard.

NBA buyout market: 5 names to watch

The NBA buyout market is full of some very intriguing players. Who might be available?

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean teams are done making meaningful additions. Rosters could still change in a big way ahead of the playoffs thanks to the NBA buyout market. There’s a number of intriguing players who may negotiate contract buyouts with their current squads in the coming weeks. From there, they would be able to join any team with an open roster spot.

Whether it’s PJ Brown and the 2008 Celtics or Reggie Jackson and last year’s Clippers team, adding a player via the buyout market can make a major impact. Veteran players often look to jump ship to contenders as winter turns to spring and postseason comes into view. Expect the Lakers and Heat to be players here. Ditto the Sixers and Nets. Any team with a shot at a title will think long and hard about making a meaningful addition if it can.

Check out some of the names that could be on the move and headline the 2022 NBA buyout market:

5 non-star trade fits Sixers should target at the upcoming deadline

Here are five non-star trade targets the Philadelphia 76ers should look at for the upcoming deadline.

The Philadelphia 76ers have a roster they believe can contend for a title as Joel Embiid has propelled the team back toward the top of the East with his stellar play. His elite performances compel the Sixers to get the right piece to team with him and take advantage of what they have in front of them.

The Sixers are most likely not going to find that piece by the Feb. 10 deadline. There is now little chance, reportedly, the team moves Ben Simmons and brings in a star to put next to Embiid and push for a title. Philadelphia will likely have to wait for the offseason to do that, since that is the earliest a guy such as James Harden comes into play.

As for the 2021-22 season, there are some targets Philadelphia should look at to find fits with Embiid in deals that wouldn’t include Simmons:

Celtics trade two veterans and a young wing to secure the team’s third star in new B/R trade proposal

It’s not implausible, and we’d have to think about this one a while before making a decision.

The part of the NBA season where we start to see blockbuster trade deals proposed en masse by analysts of the sport is starting in earnest with the availability of players who signed deals over the summer to be traded beginning a little less than two weeks from now.

And one such blockbuster trade projection was put together by Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes that would see the Boston Celtics finally get their third star by shipping out some players who have deep roots with the team. The proposal is not far off from a similar deal proposed on an episode of our in-house “Celtics Lab” podcast, so we aren’t opposed to the deal in principle, though the ask would sting quite a bit.

Let’s take a look at Hughes’ hypothetical deal.

Out-of-rotation players who could become trade candidates

Here are some NBA players getting healthy DNP-CDs who could have a potential role in a different team’s rotation.

We are more than three weeks into the NBA regular season and most teams have settled on their rotations. Some aren’t fully healthy and will have tinkering to do when key players return, but some others have some rotation players that are not playing.

Here are some players consistently getting DNP-CDs despite being healthy who could become candidates for a trade.

Trade suggestion: Sixers move Ben Simmons to Kings in 3-team deal

A new trade suggestion has the Philadelphia 76ers moving Ben Simmons to the Sacramento Kings in a 3-team trade.

The offseason continues and the Philadelphia 76ers have not yet moved embattled 25-year-old star Ben Simmons. The franchise continues to take trade calls on the three-time All-Star, but it will remain patient in search of the right deal.

The franchise ultimately wants Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard, but Lillard is not a real possibility at the moment. Therefore, the Sixers might have to look in other directions in order to get a Simmons deal done.

In a new trade suggestion from Bleacher Report, they have the Sixers moving Simmons to the Sacramento Kings in a deal that involves the Toronto Raptors as a third team.

The deal:

  • Sixers receive: Buddy Hield, Goran Dragic, a 2022 first-round pick and a 2024 first-round pick from the Kings, a 2023 second-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick from the Raptors
  • Kings receive: Simmons
  • Raptors receive: Marvin Bagley III and Furkan Korkmaz

B/R on the deal for the Sixers:

Hield is on a short list of the game’s greatest quantity-plus-quality shooters, and he’s been a 19-point scorer since the start of 2018-19. Dragic would scratch an itch for perimeter shot-creation having just completed a campaign in which he averaged 18.1 points, 5.9 assists and 2.5 threes per 36 minutes. The four draft picks would give Daryl Morey ammunition to chase an impact piece in a separate swap.

Bringing in Dragic from Toronto would be an interesting possibility considering he can handle the ball and be a point guard while also offering up scoring, toughness, and shooting from that spot. Hield would also be a good fit next to him and he would push either Seth Curry or Danny Green to a bench role.

However, the Sixers will remain patient on the Simmons trade front. The franchise wants a guy like Lillard and if they can pull off a deal to get Lillard, it would be a huge addition to team him next to Joel Embiid.

We’re getting deeper into the offseason now with Summer League set to culminate this week, and with that, comes some peace and calm in the NBA transaction world… everywhere except on the trade market.

Just on Sunday, we got a report of a relatively noteworthy trade between the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies that would send Eric Bledsoe back to the team that drafted him, Los Angeles, in exchange for Patrick Beverley, Rajon Rondo and Daniel Oturu.

Beyond that deal, we’re also starting to see a steady stream of trade rumors involving players outside of the major names we’ve been hearing for months now.

Below, check out the latest installment of our Trade Rumor Rankings series, which ranks the five players who have appeared most on our Trade Rumors Page over the previous seven days.
