What’s next for the hard cap after Warriors waive Marquese Chriss?

The Warriors are now $1,236,685 below the apron, leaving them plenty of space to sign one of Damion Lee or Ky Bowman to a standard contract.

The Warriors waived forward Marquese Chriss after playing 37 games for them. The move comes ahead of the January 10 deadline to waive players on non-guaranteed contracts before they become fully guaranteed.

The Warriors were roughly $375,000 below the $138.928 million hard cap, or apron, throughout the season. Chriss’s contract was non-guaranteed and added $9,485 daily to the Warriors payroll. By waiving him on January 7, Chriss leaves the Warriors with a $758,804 dead cap hit.

The Warriors are now $1,236,685 below the apron, leaving them plenty of space to sign one of Damion Lee or Ky Bowman to a standard contract.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Warriors intend on converting Lee for now, who has run out his 45-day two-way clock.

If Lee is signed on January 7, his pro-rated minimum salary would be $915,573. This would put the Warriors $321,112 below the apron. They would have to trade a minimum-salaried player, such as Alec Burks or Glenn Robinson III, to clear enough room to sign Bowman to his minimum salary.

The Warriors still have $1.7 million remaining from their taxpayer mid-level exception. There is a strong possibility that the Warriors use part of the exception to sign Lee in order to give him at least a three-year contract. By using the exception, the Warriors could also pay Lee a little more than the minimum salary.

Omari Spellman is earning a larger role in Steve Kerr’s rotation

Omari Spellman has been playing well of late for the Warriros, and is earning himself more minutes in Steve Kerr’s rotation.

In a year where the Golden State Warriors have struggled to secure wins, the development of younger players has been the silver lining to an otherwise down season. One of the Warriors bright spots of late has been sophomore big-man, Omari Spellman.

Spellman, after spending his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks, has been impressive in his first season in Golden State.

Spellman is averaging 7.1 points, 4.9 rebounds per game with 44.8 % shooting from the field this season, while also adding 39.3 % from beyond the arc. Spellman’s numbers with the Warriors in 2019-20 are all above his career averages.

In the past two games, the Villanova product has played over 20-minutes off the bench and registered double-digit scoring numbers in each game. The Cleveland native has also added a rim-rocking dunk in each of his last two contests.

Without Kevon Looney, and Draymond Green getting ejected, Spellman played a significant role against the Detroit Pistons. The former Atlanta Hawk dropped a career-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting, adding a perfect 4-of-4 from the 3-point range.

With two Warriors frontline pieces out of the game, Spellman used his opportunity against Detroit as an audition for more minutes in Steve Kerr’s rotation.

Honestly, I just was going out and trying to play aggressive, and seize the opportunity — I don’t want to lay down and just accept losing minutes — I’m going to just stay ready, but I’m not going to take that lying dow— I want to prove that I can play, I should be out there in my opinion.

In the Warriors practice over the weekend, following their 111-104 loss to Detroit, Kerr agreed Spellman had earned more playing time.

I think Omari has absolutely earned more minutes, he played great last night, played well for us early in the season before things kind of went against him — sometimes it’s just circumstantial, but circumstances turn, especially if you have the fortitude to keep working and remain patient like he has and remain positive — that’s probably the thing I’m most proud of him for.

Both of Spellman’s frontcourt mates, Looney, and Green are dealing with injuries. Neither will suit up against the Sacramento Kings, opening up another opportunity for the Warriors eager forward to build on his impressive play.

Prediction

Kings 109, Warriors 104

Moneyline (ML)

As juicy as the Warriors are at +425, you have to PASS on the moneyline in this game. The implied probability of a Warriors straight-up win is 19% and, with all the line value, it’s just too risky of a play. BetMGM expects the Kings (-589) to win but obviously, we aren’t betting those odds, ever.

New to sports betting? A $10 on the Kings to win outright returns a profit of $1.70. This is called a chalk play.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

It’s tough to discuss trends when it comes to the Warriors because of how riddled with injuries they are. For example, the Kings are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 meetings against the Warriors, but they are just 3-7 straight up. In their first and only meeting this season, the Kings dominated the Warriors, 100-79. The Warriors have had success in similar betting situations (7-3 ATS when getting 10-plus points), while the Kings have yet to be favored by more than 10 points this season.

I’m on the WARRIORS (+10.5, -106) because the Kings shouldn’t be laying 10-plus to any team. I get it, the Warriors are banged up, but the Kings are 2-7 ATS as home favorites with a minus-1.2 margin of victory, and they are minus-6.5 against the line.

Over/under (O/U)

The main reason to take UNDER 216.5 (-106) is simple: Both teams have been trash on offense. The Warriors rank 26th in points per game and 29th in offensive rating, while the Kings are 24th and 21st, respectively, in the same categories. Considering the Warriors’ injury woes, the backups are trying to earn rotation minutes when the starters come back or garner interest from other teams, so we are getting a full-on effort from the Dubs.

Injury Report: Golden State All-Star duo questionable vs. Kings

The Warriors could be without another All-Star pairing against the Sacramento Kings with both D’Angelo Russell and Draymond Green listed as questionable for Monday night.

A sentence Golden State fans everywhere are way too familiar reading in the 2019-20 season—the Warriors could be without two former All-Stars for their upcoming game.

When the Warriors’ cross-Northern California rivals, the Sacramento Kings host the Dubs Monday evening at the Golden 1 Center, D’Angelo Russell and Draymond Green could be along the bench instead of in the game.

The Warriors are already without both All-Star shooters, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry, but now the injury bug has hit Golden State’s second decorated duo, Green and Russell.

Russell (shoulder) and Green (ankle), are listed as questionable for the matchup in the state capital Monday night.

Russell’s missed the past three games after running into Luka Doncic in a nasty collision last week. The Louisville native was able to return against the Mavericks after the crash with Doncic, but the injury has relegated him to the bench for the past three games.

The Warriors have lost their past three games without their All-Star guard, but Russell could be on his way back after participating in practice over the weekend.

Before the Warriors tipped off against the Detroit Pistons, Steve Kerr told reporters he would “expect” Russell to be ready to return against the Kings.

Green was ejected against the Pistons in the third quarter and is now dealing with an ankle injury that caused him to miss practice on Sunday. Green’s missed eight games in the 2019-20 season with a sore heel, a finger issue, and is now listed as questionable against the Sacramento Kings with an ankle injury.

If the Warriors’ banged-up duo can’t go against Sacramento, expect Steve Kerr to lean on Glenn Robinson III, Alec Burks and Omari Spellman, who’ve all separately performed well with a more significant chunk of minutes.

In loss vs. Detroit, Warriors’ bench score highest total since 2009

Behind Alec Burks and Omari Spellman, the Golden State Warriors bench unit registered their highest-scoring night since 2009.

Against the Detroit Pistons, the Golden State Warriors were down two key contributors heading into the game, late in the third quarter, it didn’t get any easier when Draymond Green was ejected.

Green was thrown out of the game by referee, Tre Maddox with a little under five minutes into the third period, subtracting another player from the Warriors already thin lineup.

With Green hitting the showers early, and both D’Angelo Russell (shoulder) and Kevon Looney (abdomen) ruled out, someone needed to handle a bulk of the minutes against Detroit.

It wasn’t just one player, but the entire Golden State Warriors bench unit carried the load against the Pistons. The understaffed Warriors couldn’t overcome the pairing of Derrick Rose and Andre Drummond. Yet, their bench ended up turning in a valiant effort.

Breakout journeyman, Alec Burks came off the bench to lead the Warriors in scoring with 27 on 5-of-13 shooting from the field. Burks was a technician getting to the charity stripe, knocking down 14-of-14 attempts from the free-throw line against Detroit. The Colorado product added seven board and five assists, potentially boosting his trade value.

Behind Burks was big-man Omari Spellman, who provided the Warriors with a spark off the bench against the Pistons. The former Villanova Wildcat scored 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, adding a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Late in the fourth quarter against Detroit, Spellman threw down a powerful one-handed jam to put an exclamation point on his impressive night off the bench.

After the game, Steve Kerr praised the bench’s effort to reporters, saying the Warriors needed them after their slow start.

“The bench came in a did a great job, and they had to because we got off to a very slow start — second game in a row that we’ve really came out of the gate slow and had to play from behind for pretty much the whole night — it’s a tough way to play, so the bench did a really good job for us.”

Burks, Spellman and the rest of the bench combined for 77 total points, the high for bench points this season and the most since November 9, 2009, against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With the Warriors’ slim roster struggling near the halfway point of the season, Kerr may need to rely on his bench at a similar rate until Looney and Russell return to the lineup healthy.

49ers All-Pro George Kittle fired up Warriors crowd vs. Pistons

With the rest of the NFL locked-in on Wild Card Weekend, 49ers All-Pro tight end, George Kittle was taking in some Warriors’ basketball from Chase Center.

With the Golden State Warriors struggling, the San Francisco 49ers have picked up the Bay Area baton for successful sports teams in Northern California. The 49ers own a 13-3 regular-season record and await their first playoff game of a Super Bowl stretch run.

The San Francisco 49ers clinched a first-round bye in the NFC’s playoff bracket with a dramatic win over their NFC West rival, the Seattle Seahawks last weekend.

Most of the football world is locking into Wild Card weekend, except for one All-Pro tight end.

A significant part of their rise to the number one seed in the NFC playoff picture is their third-year tight end, George Kittle. Instead of kicking back and watching Wild Card weekend in the NFL, Kittle was spotted at San Francisco’s new arena, the Chase Center.

Kittle along with fellow tight end, Levine Toilolo were in attendance for the Warriors’ 111-104 loss to the Detroit Pistons. At one point in the game, Kittle was shown on the jumbotron in Chase Center and proceeded to fire up the crowd.

Later in the game, Kittle was seen counting up a long receipt that was later confirmed by the 49ers Pro-Bowler as his 50/50 raffle tickets.

Early in the week, Kittle was named as the tight end on the NFL’s All-Pro first team and capped off the 49ers’ first-round playoff bye week at the Warriors’ game. Don’t expect Kittle at many more Warriors home games in the near future as the 49ers return to the field Saturday in the NFC Divisional round of the playoffs.

Draymond Green mocks referee, gets ejected

Draymond Green picked up two technicals in the span of a few seconds and was tossed from the game.

Draymond Green has racked up double-digit technical fouls in each of the last five NBA seasons, and he’s got a decent chance to set a new career high in 2020. On Saturday night at home against the Pistons in a close game, Green got himself ejected by picking up two technicals in quick succession by openly mocking a referee’s ‘T’ signal on the court.

Green was called for a reach-in foul and was unhappy with the whistle, so he argued and picked up his first technical.

In response, Green mocked the referee’s technical call, and was promptly thrown from the game.

The Warriors went on to lose, 111-104, to drop to 9-28 on the season.
