Tom Izzo recaps Michigan State basketball’s win over Georgia Southern

Tonight was an important one for Michigan State basketball, as the Spartans had one last tune-up game before conference play starts next week against Wisconsin. MSU did their job on Tuesday night, beating Georgia Southern by 31 points, and now Izzo will get the chance to reflect on some mixed results from the opening of the season and figure out a way forward.

Izzo shared some of those thoughts after the win in his typical press conference, and you can find the best quotes from that below.

Wisconsin set a Big Ten Conference record in its 35-14 win over Georgia Southern

It was a weird statistical day from the Badgers’ defense…

The final score of Wisconsin’s 35-14 win over Georgia Southern does not tell the full story of the contest.

The Eagles had the Badgers on their heels, leading 14-7 early in the third quarter despite QB Davis Brin throwing three first-half interceptions. Then, thanks to several more Brin interceptions, Wisconsin finally pulled away late with a 28-point second half.

The offense didn’t five much to be excited about, aside from its rushing success late. The defense, on the other hand, had quite the statistical day:

Six total turnovers (five interceptions, one fumble) and five sacks, but 455 total yards allowed.

Focusing on the positive part of that day, Wisconsin became the first Big Ten team since 2000 to record at least five interceptions and five sacks in the same game.

Here are all five of those interceptions:

The Badgers now have a lot to clean up before they get set to travel to West Lafayette, Indiana for a Friday night battle with 1-2 Purdue.

Some positives from yesterday’s game:

Wisconsin escaped a scare yesterday with a 35-14 win over Georgia Southern.

The final score doesn’t tell the story of how sloppy and uninspiring the performance was, at least for the first three quarters. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime despite three Georgia Southern interceptions, the Eagles then led 14-7 early in the third quarter before the Badgers got the ground game going and ran to a 21-point win.

It was not the cakewalk many expected entering the day. But the Badgers improved to 2-1 entering a Friday night contest against a struggling 1-2 Purdue team.

Before we turn the page to previewing next weekend’s game, here are some game balls from Wisconsin’s win:

How to watch tomorrow’s game:

Wisconsin returns home tomorrow for an out-of-conference matchup with the Georgia Southern Eagles.

The Badgers’ 1-1 record largely reflects the play on the field thus far through two weeks. There have been flashes of the team we expect to see under head coach Luke Fickell and offensive coordinator Phil Longo, yet inconsistency and minor growing pains have been a large hindrance.

Good news for Fickell and his team: the 2-0 Eagles enter Madison ranked No. 83 in ESPN’s SP+. They enter with a respectable offensive attack yet one of the worst-rated defenses in the nation.

If there was ever a good opportunity for Wisconsin to find its gear, it’s this game.

Before we begin the football that matters next week at Purdue, here is how to watch tomorrow’s game between the Badgers and Georgia Southern Eagles:

Everything you need to know about the 2023 Georgia Southern Eagles

A preview of the Badgers’ upcoming opponent:

Wisconsin now turns the page after its 31-22 loss to Washington State and 1-1 start to the season. Next up are the 2-0 Georgia Southern Eagles, a team led by former Texas head coach Clay Helton who defeated Nebraska in Lincoln last season and effectively ended the Scott Frost era.

These Badgers should be much better than last year’s Cornhuskers. It’s matchups like these that allow a team to gel and gain momentum before conference play begins.

The Eagles enter Saturday as SP+’s No. 83 team in the nation with the No. 47 offense and No. 124 defense. Those numbers and the team’s track record point to one theme: this should be a massive day for the Wisconsin offense.

Here is everything you need to know about the Georgia Southern Eagles:

Vikings UDFA NaJee Thompson embraces special teams as path to the NFL

The path to making an NFL roster as a UDFA is a challenge, and one that Georgia Southern CB NaJee Thompson welcomes with open arms.

For the undrafted free agents signed after the NFL Draft, making the 53-man roster is an uphill battle.

It starts with rookie minicamp, which begins just two weeks after the draft for the Minnesota Vikings. Then, there’s a chance to impress during training camp and preseason and earn a role on the Vikings’ regular season roster

For the most part, those roles are special teams-based. Few undrafted rookies start their career with a role on defense and those that do likely earned their respect on special teams.

While it may be a lost art to some, special teams are an avenue to living out the NFL dream. As a result, rookies embrace the trade, becoming as good as they can be.

Few undrafted rookies have taken the path of Vikings’ undrafted free agent NaJee Thompson.

Former Ohio State hoops player Eugene Brown III has found his new home

Eugene Brown III will return to his home state of Georgia after entering the transfer portal in March.

Eugene Brown III made the decision to move on from Ohio State at the end of March. He spent three seasons with the Buckeyes, but the writing was on the wall with OSU freshmen getting the starting nods as the season wore on. With another highly touted class coming in this year, Brown thought it would be in his best interest to find a program where he could shine.

The Former Buckeye announced that he was coming home on his personal Instagram page stating that he had committed to Georgia Southern. Brown was a star at Southwest DeKalb High School in Conyers, Georgia, where he came to Ohio State as a four-star prospect in 2020.

Injuries kept Brown from seeing his full potential in the Scarlet and Gray but hopefully, things will fare better for the young man at his new home. Brown will have two years of eligibility remaining for the Eagles.
