CBS Sports names former Georgia Bulldog as a top-10 NFL linebacker

CBS Sports recently released their list of the top-10 NFL linebackers with one former Georgia Bulldog named.

CBS Sports’

“Smith is a tremendous blitzer, a good tackler, and has enough speed to track pass catchers downfield and sideline to sideline. If he puts it all together, he’ll be one of the best linebackers in football. I think he’ll do exactly that in 2020 after two good, but not great seasons to begin his career.”

Smith, the 2018 No. 8 pick of the NFL Draft, was an absolute beast during his time at Georgia. He led the team in tackles in 2016 and broke-out in 2017 – totaling 137 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and 20 quarterback pressures. An amazing season that won him Georgia defensive MVP, 2017 SEC Championship MVP, 2018 Rose Bowl MVP, and the 2017 Butkus Award, given to the nation’s best linebacker.

Georgia football play of the day

We are choosing our favorite plays in Georgia football history in celebration of the upcoming 2020 college football season. Watch it here.

One of my favorite times of the year is upon us. Players have arrived on campus and are beginning workouts, while the college football world starts slowly building excitement and expectation for the 2020 season.

To celebrate, we are picking one of our favorite plays in Georgia football history day-by-day.

Today’s play is one of the most exciting moments in Bulldog history…

Georgia vs. Florida (2012) – Georgia star outside linebacker Jarvis Jones forces a fumble on a potential game-changing catch by Florida tight end Jordan Reed late in the fourth quarter.

Projected 2020 Georgia football depth chart: Linebackers

We project what Georgia’s line-backing core will look like in 2020 after a record breaking year for the Bulldogs defense in 2019.

The 2019 Georgia defense might have been the best in program history. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked No. 1 in scoring defense, No. 3 in total defense and only allowed two rushing touchdowns all year.

The Georgia defense in 2020 will look a little different, mainly because of the departures of safety J.R. Reed and linebacker Tae Crowder to the NFL. However, Georgia returns a majority of starters from the record-setting unit in 2019, led by coach Kirby Smart and one of the most experienced linebackers in the SEC, Monty Rice.

Here is our projection of what the linebacker depth chart will look like in the Fall:
