Where Georgia Bulldogs statistic leaders rank in the SEC

Georgia football statistics leaders through Week 8. Ranking Bulldogs among the SEC’s leaders

With the Georgia Bulldogs going into their second bye week let’s look at where their stat leaders rank among the SEC.

Offense

Passing

Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Jaxson Dart leads the SEC with 2,384 passing yards followed by LSU Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier with 2,222 passing yards.

Carson Beck is third in the SEC going into the bye week with 1,993 passing yards.  He also is second in passing touchdowns with 15.

Rushing

Georgia’s rushing leader is Trevor Etienne with 422 rushing yards, which is on pace to become the Bulldogs’ first 1,000 yard rusher since D’Andre Swift in 2019. His rushing yard total ranks 9th in the SEC. His three touchdown performance against the Texas Longhorns helped him become 6th in the SEC in rushing touchdowns with his total at 8. Etienne missed Week 1.

Receiving

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Arian Smith is off to a strong start to the season. Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia leading receiver in yards goes to Arian Smith with 444 receiving yards. Smith is on pace to become Georgia’s first 1,000 yard receiver since star receiver Terrance Edwards did it in 2002. The yard total has Smith ranked 13th in the SEC. A surprising stat is that Dillon Bell leads the team with 4 receiving touchdowns. In which he is tied 5th with the likes of Texas star wide receiver Isaiah Bond and Ole Miss Rebels wide receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells Jr.

Defense

Tackles

On the defensive side the leading tackler is star safety Malaki Starks. The junior has accounted for 39 total tackles in which it ranks tied for 22nd with Alabama Crimson Tide defensive Keon Sabb and Mississippi State safety Brylan Lanier.

Sacks

After his 3 sack performance against Texas Jalon Walker remains the sack leader among the Georgia defense with 4.5 sacks. The last 10 plus sack rusher for Georgia was Jarvis Jones in 2012 with his record-breaking 13.5 sack season. Walker has a chance to be the first 10 sacks rusher in the Kirby Smart era here at Georgia. It is tied for 8th with the likes of South Carolina Gamecock edge rusher Dylan Stewart and LSU Tigers defensive end Sai’von Jones.

Interceptions

Dan Jackson, Daylen Everette, and Malaki Starks leads the Bulldog defense with 1 interception. The trio ranks tied for 15th among players in the SEC.

Special Teams

Kicking

Sophomore kicker Peyton Woodring is second in the SEC field goal percentage with 92.3 percent going 12 for 13. His long of 55 yards is tied for 4th with Kentucky kicker Alex Raynor.

Punting

Although the punt game has not been used much this season Georgia punter Brett Thorson is still a crucial part to this teams success. He is third in the SEC yards per punt which is 48.3 behind Arkansas Razorback punter Devin Bale and South Carolina Kai Kroeger.

Returning

The return game has been very efficient due to the fact that Anthony Evans III is back there returning. He is 4th in the SEC in punt return yards with 104 yards to his name. He is behind Florida Gators Chiemere Dike, Texas Silas Bolden, and Vanderbilt Commodores returner Martel Hight.

Stat breakdown of No. 1 Georgia at No. 4 Alabama

Looking at key stats that may decide the Georgia Bulldogs at Alabama Crimson Tide football game

A clash of SEC championship contenders is taking place this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET as the Georgia Bulldogs will play the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The game will be televised on ABC, with “College GameDay” heading to Tuscaloosa for day.

Both teams had a bye week in Week 4, but Georgia lost the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll in Week 3 after an ugly 13-12 win against the Kentucky Wildcats. Alabama has looked strong as the No. 4 spot, coming off of a 42-10 win over the Wisconsin Badgers, but this will be their first SEC game of the season.

Kirby Smart is 1-5 in his career playing against Alabama, but with Nick Saban no longer coaching at Alabama anymore, Smart will look to improve his record against the Tide.

Here’s a statistical look at each team, provided by CFB Stats.

USA TODAY 10Best: Is Georgia the best college for sports fans? Vote now!

Scoring Offense:

Georgia: 31.7 points per game (58th)

Alabama: 49.0 points per game (6th)

Alabama’s impressive scoring offense is a big reason why we think the Crimson Tide may have a significant edge against Georgia.

Rushing Offense:

Georgia: 145.7 rushing yards per game (84th)

Alabama: 238.0 rushing yards per game (19th)

Passing Offense:

Georgia: 256.7 passing yards per game (48th)

Alabama: 228.7 passing yards per game (69th)

Total Offense:

Georgia: 402.3 total yards per game (t-65th)

Alabama: 466.7 yards per game (24th)

Scoring Defense

Georgia: 6.0 points allowed per game (3rd)

Alabama: 8.7 points allowed per game (6th)

Georgia is the only defense in the country that has not allowed a touchdown all season.

Rushing Defense:

Georgia: 110.67 rushing yards allowed per game (42nd)

Alabama: 132.33 rushing yards allowed per game (69th)

Passing Defense:

Georgia: 91.3 passing yards allowed per game (1st)

Alabama: 115.7 passing yards allowed per game (7th)

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe represents the biggest challenge (by far) for the Georgia secondary this season.

Total Defense

Georgia: 202.0 total yards allowed per game (4th)

Alabama: 248.0 total yards allowed per game (13th)

Both teams have a top-15 defense in yards allowed per game, along with a top ten defense in points allowed per game. The question will be which offense reigns supreme in this one. Carson Beck, who is seeing his Heisman candidacy slip, will need to lead the Georgia offense without one of its top receivers against the only team he’s ever lost to in his career.

Where Georgia football ranks in key statistics

Georgia football is off to a slow start in the red zone, but has a good turnover margin and excellent scoring defense

The Georgia Bulldogs have started slow in all three games to begin the 2023 college football season. The Bulldogs have struggled in the red zone. Georgia’s red zone issues made last week’s game against South Carolina a lot more competitive than it should have been.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck has done a great job of taking care of the football. Georgia’s offense only has one turnover, but the offense has not been particularly explosive through three weeks.

Defensively, Georgia’s run defense is off to a slow start when compared to Georgia’s sky-high run defense standards. The Georgia defense is doing an excellent job of getting stops on third down.

Georgia announced its team captains ahead of the most important game remaining on the schedule.

Linebacker Monty Rice, cornerback Tyson Campbell and running back James Cook will lead the No. 5 ranked Dawgs today against the No. 8 Gators in Jacksonville.

For Rice, this is his third time serving as team captain. On the year he has 27 tackles, 2 for a loss, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

This will be Campbell’s second time captaining the Bulldogs. He has 13 tackles, 1 for a loss, and has 4 pass deflections in 2020.

And Cook will be making his first appearance as team captain. The junior has had a nice year, taking 23 carries for 122 yards and 10 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown.

Paul Finebaum on Georgia-Florida: ‘Very dangerous game for Kirby Smart’

Paul Finebaum discusses the Georgia-Florida game and how there is a lot of pressure on UGA football HC Kirby Smart to win it.

It’s Georgia-Florida day, and the No. 5 ranked Dawgs are looking to make it four in a row over the No. 8 Gators in Jacksonville.

For both sides, this is an SEC Championship play-in game. The loser of this matchup will have two losses on its record.

Georgia, though favored and ranked higher, is actually viewed as an underdog in the eyes of many for this one. A lackluster offense and a banged up defense have created a lot of doubt about UGA’s chances of winning.

While on ESPN’s First Take this week, Paul Finebaum discussed the challenges that UGA and Kirby Smart face for the Cocktail Party, in addition to speaking on Georgia’s unfortunate quarterback situation.

“This is a precarious game for Georgia,” Finebaum said. “They’ve only lost to Alabama, they led at halftime, got blown out in the second half. They had an uninspiring game last week against Kentucky, only scoring 14 points. And if they lose this game, there are going to be a lot of people who go back into the history books of two years ago and start asking the question to Kirby Smart, ‘How did you let Justin Fields get away?’”

We know the story. Fields transferred to Ohio State after one year at Georgia. Now he’s a Heisman contender. Then Jamie Newman transferred to Georgia from Wake Forest, but we never got to see him in red and black as he opted out in the preseason.

Now, it’s all on Stetson Bennett’s shoulders. A former JUCO star, Bennett has struggled during the 2020 season, and he’ll need to clean it up today and limit turnovers if UGA wants to keep with Florida’s offense.

“They’re severely challenged,” Finebaum said. “And as I say that, Florida has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Kyle Trask. … So this is a very dangerous game for Kirby Smart.”

Five reasons Georgia beats Florida

Five reasons why we think Georgia football beats Florida this Saturday.

The biggest rivalry in college football, also known as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, goes down tomorrow in Jacksonville, FL.  No. 5 Georgia (4-1, 4-1) will take on No. 8 Florida (3-1, 3-1) in a top-10 SEC East matchup for the ages.

Kirby Smart is 3-1 against Auburn in his four years as the Bulldogs’ head coach and has won the past three games, putting the overall series in favor of Georgia 52-43-2.

Georgia features one of the nation’s top defenses while Florida showcases one of the nation’s top offenses.  The Dawgs are favored by 3.5 points in a game that could very well determine the winner of the SEC East. All odds are courtesy BetMGM.

Saturday’s showdown is set to kickoff at 3:30 P.M. on CBS.

Here are five reasons we believe the Dawgs come out of Jacksonville victorious this Saturday.

Former UGA great Malcolm Mitchell joined me this week on UGA Football Live with J.C. Shelton to talk about his life after football.

Former Georgia receiver Malcolm Mitchell joined me this week on our podcast UGA Football Live with J.C. Shelton to talk about his life after hanging up his football cleats in early 2019.

You can listen here:

The former Patriots wideout went from catching passes and winning Super Bowls with Tom Brady, to full-time author and CEO of his own youth literacy foundation Read With Malcolm.

“I am a full-time author and CEO of my youth literacy foundation and that’s what consumes the majority of my time, Malcolm told me on Wednesday. “It’s a little different that running down the field and catching passes, but I enjoy it.

Mitchell developed an interest with books and reading during his career in Athens and even published his first book “The Magician’s Hat” during his junior year.

“(Georgia) That’s where my curiosity really reached its peak in terms of being exposed of all the different cultures that college exposes you to and then just wanting to learn more, Mitchell continued. I found reading to be a very very useful tool in expanding as a person and it consumed me and I just read as much as I could.”

Mitchell’s foundation hosts its annual READBowl global reading competition beginning in January, something that Mitchell started four years ago.

“It’s really fun, we’ve had every state participate, we’ve had other countries participate and it’s an opportunity for reading to me sport and classmates are able to compete to see who can read the most minutes.”
