Georgia rides historic individual round into women’s NCAA Championship top 10

“She shows up at the right time,” said Georgia head coach Josh Brewer of his big-time performer.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Every team wants a player who steps up and delivers in the biggest moments. For the Georgia women, that’d be Candice Mahé.

Sure, the native of Gourin, France, only has a pair of top-five finishes for the Bulldogs, but both have been in the postseason. Mahé finished T-5 at last year’s Columbus regional, T-3 at this year’s Albuquerque regional and currently sits T-6 at the  2022 NCAA Div. I Women’s Golf Championship following a second-round 3-under 69, one shot off the low round of the day.

“It just shows her teammates it’s out there. Be patient, you can make it. You can do this,” said head coach Josh Brewer of the importance of Mahé’s round. Georgia climbed seven spots into 10th place, five positions inside Sunday’s 54-hole cut to the top 15 teams. “She shows up at the right time.”

Leaderboards: Team | Individual

“That’s the reason why I play golf. I really like pressure and when there’s people watching,” said Mahé. “Everybody remembers the name of the national champion and not the regular season and I feel like this tournament is way more important. I might be able to focus way more and I’m gonna have to work on this to find the same thing for regular season, but I’m sure it’s gonna come.”

Mahé became just the fourth Bulldog to shoot a sub-70 round at the NCAA Championship, joining the likes of 1992 national champion Vicki Goetze, 2002 runner-up Summer Sirmons and Shauna Estes, who finished third in 1999. After a 6 under start through her first 11 holes, Mahé made her first two bogeys of the day on Nos. 12 and 13, bounced back with a birdie on the 14th and then made double bogey on the par-4 17th.

“Obviously right now I’m still frustrated from my round because I was 6 under after 11 and I feel like when you have that good of a start you should be able to go super low,” said Mahé, who credited her consecutive bogeys to her adrenaline which impacted her distance control. “I finished with a double so definitely not what I expected but we have tomorrow. We did a good job as a team and we’re really here to make it into much play and then it’s a new tournament. I guess everything can happen.”

After shooting an 81 at the SEC Championship in April, her worst score in college, these last two weeks in the southwest have been great for Mahé’s confidence.

“I feel like I needed that to actually work from this and coaches helped me a lot to work on my golf swing and on my confidence because you can lose their confidence really quick,” she explained. “When I have a round like this I’m really proud of myself because it’s been tough for everybody.”

“We finished well yesterday, played our last five holes four under and the momentum carried over,” said Brewer. “I get it, people are gonna say, ‘You’re finished stunk today,’ but the thing is, if you told me I could be in 10th place heading into Sunday, how we got there I don’t care, so now we know we have the firepower to go out because we had a special round.”

Brewer noted how playing in the Albuquerque regional not only helped with handling the 20-mph winds this week, but also the poise it gave his group.

“It gave us confidence,” said Brewer of the Bulldogs’ third-place finish two weeks ago in New Mexico. “We’ve been playing well all year, we’ve been waiting and finally we did it.”

The Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list for 2022 is released

The first watch list of the college football season is out with the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.

As the temperatures begin rising and the summer months come our way, the reminders that another college football season is on the way continue to roll out. While it will still be some time before we hit our stride with watch list season later this summer, the Lott IMPACT Trophy got the ball rolling this week with the release of its watch list for the upcoming college football season.

A total of 42 players appear on the watch list for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is awarded to one of the nation’s top defensive players in the country with a special focus on an individual’s character and impact on the field. Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] is the lone Nittany Lion appearing on the watch list for the award going into the 2022 season.

Last year’s winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy was Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. It was the second season in a row that a Big Ten player won the award, following Northwestern linebacker Paddy Fisher in 2020.

Penn State has one Lott IMPACT Trophy award winner in program history. [autotag]Carl Nassib[/autotag] received the award in 2015.

Oregon vs Georgia game time and TV network announced

The kickoff time and network has been announced for Oregon’s season-opening game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

We all knew when Oregon was going to face Georgia. We even knew where.

Now we know what time and where to watch one of the Ducks’ biggest non-conference games in their history.

Dan Lanning will coach his first game for Oregon when the Ducks face the defending champions the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 3 at 12:30 p.m. PT and it will be televised on ABC.

It’s no surprise the network picked up this contest as it’s one of the biggest games in the 2022 college football season. Although it hasn’t been announced yet, it would be shocking if ESPN’s Gameday won’t be hand to cover Lanning as he faces off against the Bulldogs.

These kinds of announcements only mean that college football is right around the corner and the speculation can end and the games can begin.

Ex-Florida Gators football coach Dan Mullen joins Georgia high school program

Dan Mullen goes from head coach at Florida to a “contributing resource” for a Georgia high school football team whose head coach is a former Kirby Smart staffer. Love it.

On Sunday, Lake Oconee Academy in Greensboro, Georgia announced that former Florida Gators head football coach Dan Mullen will be joining the program for the 2022 season.

Mullen will join on “as a contributing resource to the football program and athletic department,” athletic director Chris Ingle told Lake Oconee News.

This comes after there was a report on Twitter stating that Mullen was hired as Lake Oconee Academy’s offensive coordinator. The school clarified that that was an incorrect report.

“It is unfortunate that reports of him being named the offensive coordinator surfaced without confirmation,” the school said in a press release. “While he would be tremendous at this position, he will not be active as the offensive coordinator at Lake Oconee Academy. We look forward to him being a member of our community and Titan family.”

The head coach at Lake Oconee Academy is Patrick Stewart. Stewart was a former defensive assistant under Kirby Smart at Georgia.

Florida fired Mullen in November after posting a 34-15 record in four seasons with the Gators. At the time of his firing, Florida was 5-6 on the 2021 season and had just lost an overtime game to the Missouri Tigers by a score of 24-23.

Per Lake Oconee News, Mullen has a vacation home in Reynolds-Lake Oconee and currently resides in Greensboro, Georgia.

Oklahoma Sooners summer recruiting primer for the 2023 recruiting cycle

With the summer on the horizon, we took a look at the names to know as the Sooners look to make a push on the recruiting front for 2023.

Brent Venables and Co. are weeks removed from their first spring as a staff together. It was a successful one with no notable injuries and some standout performances across the board. All told, things went as well as they could’ve hoped considering the positive reviews from the media and recruits in attendance.

The spring game served as an eye-opener for recruits and gave the Oklahoma Sooners some significant momentum to ride as they head into the most crucial time of the year for recruiting. With spring ball done and the team going home to recharge before fall camp, the staff will be all in on recruiting. With that in mind, it’s time to map out the targets to watch as the 2023 class begins to materialize this summer.

What an all-UGA NFL team would look like for 2022 season

What an all-UGA NFL team would look like for the 2022 season…

The Georgia Bulldogs broke the record for most players selected in the NFL draft when they had 15 players taken during April’s event.

After the historic draft, Georgia now has 59 players on NFL teams, meaning it has more than enough to fill an entire 53-man roster.

With all these fresh faces entering the league, it got us wondering….what would an all-UGA NFL team look like? Well, it would be loaded with talent, especially at the linebacker position, where Roquan Smith would lead a ferocious defense that’s littered with first-round draft picks. On offense, it would be Matthew Stafford and Nick Chubb’s team, with a really solid line in front of them.

There’s a few guys you may be surprised to see are not on this list, and that’s because they are currently not on an NFL roster. Some of those names include safeties Shawn Williams and Maurice Smith, wide receiver Riley Ridley, tight end Isaac Nauta, and linebacker Davin Bellamy (USFL).

Here’s a look at what an all-UGA NFL team would look like:

Ahead of the Southeastern Conference East division matchup, former Vol pitcher Greg McMichael threw out the first pitch.

McMichael played at Tennessee from 1986-88. He played in Major League Baseball from 1993-2000.

McMichael was a pitcher for Atlanta from 1993-96 and in 2000. He was on the Braves’ 1995 World Series championship team.

The former Vol pitched for the Mets (1997-98), Dodgers (1998) and Athletics (1999).

McMichael recorded a 31-29 career record, totaling 459 strikeouts and a 3.25 ERA.

Below are photos of McMichael throwing out the first pitch ahead of the Tennessee-Georgia game and of his MLB career.

ChampU BBQ: Who’s coming to Norman for the Oklahoma Sooners mega recruiting event?

The ChampU BBQ is right around the corner and with the Oklahoma Sooners hosting several top prospects, here’s a running list of who will be coming to Norman.

The ChampU BBQ has been extremely kind to the Oklahoma Sooners these last few years and it figures that as long as they keep hosting it, it will always remain that way. Generally, the Sooners’ have an absolutely elite collection of talent in Norman during the summer at a time when school is no longer a factor and prospects are focusing on recruiting.

Last year, the Sooners had flashy luxury cars and every notable Oklahoma player of the past that they could find in attendance. Adrian Peterson was there. Kyler Murray was there. CeeDee Lamb was in attendance. Sam Bradford and Lane Johnson were in the building. Roy Williams was there. Marquise Brown and Billy Sims joined the party. Kenneth Murray and Trent Williams were in attendance.

The event serves as the Sooners’ premier recruiting event of the calendar year and every year it seems to deliver as commitments follow shortly after.

Will this year under a new regime bring the same results? We don’t know but what we do know is who will be in attendance for this mega event.

We’ve taken the liberty of chronicling every confirmed ChampU BBQ visitor below.

Jaguars agree to terms with No. 1 selection Travon Walker for rookie contract

One draft selection signed for the #Jaguars, six more to go.

When rookie minicamp starts on Friday, the Jacksonville Jaguars will at least have their top selection and the top selection of the entire 2022 NFL Draft signed. According to multiple media outlets, outside linebacker Travon Walker has agreed to terms with the Jags and will sign his deal on Thursday.

After weeks of speculation about him being the pick, the Jags selected Walker first overall out of the University of Georgia to start the draft on April 28. The selection put them in a situation where they would be ingesting the top contract of the draft for the second consecutive time after they did the same last season with quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Last week, the details of Walker’s contract were confirmed and he is set to get a four-year deal worth over $37.3 million, all of which is fully guaranteed. His signing bonus is set to be $24.3 million and the deal will include a fifth-year option like all of the recent contracts signed by first overall selections.

Walker will join the Jags after accumulating 61 total tackles and 9.5 sacks with the Bulldogs in three years. He’s expected to rush more from the edge for the Jags, which should give veteran Josh Allen the help he needs when it comes to rushing the passer.

With Walker set to sign, the Jags now have six selections left to sign. That includes another No. 1 pick in Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd.

“Touchdown Jaguars!” will be published weekly, giving Jags Wire readers a new go-to podcast to hear the latest in news, rumors, and more. To stay up to date, subscribe via Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and feel free to rate and comment.

Best photos of new Dolphins LB Channing Tindall at Georgia

Check out the Bulldog before he became a Dolphin.

The Miami Dolphins were without picks in the first two rounds of the 2022 NFL draft, so their first selection wasn’t until the end of the third round. With that pick, general manager Chris Grier drafted Georgia linebacker Channing Tindall.

Tindall joins a linebacker room that boasts Jerome Baker, Jaelan Phillips, Elandon Roberts, Andrew Van Ginkel, Sam Eguavoen, Duke Riley and Brennan Scarlett. With all of the talent in that room, the rookie will have a lot of work to do to take over an impact role.

Before he gets on the field, here are the best images of Tindall during his collegiate career.
