Photos: La Costa to open Gil Hanse-renovated North Course in June after NCAA Championships

Check out the photos of the renovated host site for the 2024 men’s and women’s NCAA Championships.

Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, has announced June 1 as the full reopening date of its Championship Course, which has been rebranded the North Course after an extensive renovation by the architectural team of Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner.

The opening to resort guests and members follows the NCAA Division I Women’s (May 17-22) and Men’s (May 24-29) Championships on the North Course. The layout is also slated to host those college championships in 2025 and 2026.

Hanse and Wagner implemented significant changes to the North layout. Among the renovations: A new drivable par-4 11th was built, the green of the par-3 16th was repositioned in a fashion reminiscent of Augusta National Golf Club’s No. 12, and the par-5 18th was stretched to more than 600 yards with water on both sides of the fairway.

The revised layout will feature six sets of tees that play from 4,500 to 7,500 yards. Other changes include transitioning irrigation lines that will continue to use reclaimed water, the removal of several man-made ponds and the reintroduction of natural barrancas that feature drought-tolerant and native species of plants.

“The North Course is now positioned to return to its stature as one of the top venues for championship golf in Southern California,” Hanse said in a media release announcing the opening date and completion of work. “We were able to combine a respect for the natural contours, landforms and vegetation with an emphasis on strategic design. This combination of beauty and interest should prove enjoyable for everyday play by members and resort guests, while asking compelling questions to be answered by the best players in the world during championship events.”

Originally designed by Dick Wilson and opened in 1965, the North layout had been renovated previously several times. It was part of a resort with a tournament pedigree that includes hosting the PGA Tour’s Mercedes Championship from 1969 to 1998, the inaugural WGC-Accenture Match Play in 1999 and the LPGA’s Kia Classic in 2010 and 2012.

The resort also announced its Legends Course has been rebranded to South Course. Both the North and South were the courses’ original names before being changed to Champions and Legends.

The resort also will feature a reimagined practice facility designed by Beau Welling that will include Toptracer technology. It’s all part of an extensive multi-year renovation to the entire resort that stretches from guest rooms and villas to the spa, lobby bar and meeting spaces.

“Working with the ‘best of the best’ course architects like Gil Hanse and his design team is a prime example of our continued commitment and investment to be in the highest echelons of U.S. golf destinations,” the resort’s managing director, Craig Martin, said in the media release. “This transformation signals a full return to championship glory at Omni La Costa and joins the now-completed renovation of the property as a whole resulting in an elevated experience for our members and resort guests to enjoy for decades to come.”

NCAA’s massive new TV deal doesn’t change college golf championships

No changes are coming for the college golf championship.

The NCAA signed a significant eight-year media rights deal with ESPN on Thursday to broadcast 40 of its men’s and women’s championship events, but those won’t include college golf.

ESPN will cover 40 NCAA championships domestically – 21 women’s and 19 men’s events (not including men’s basketball) – along with the international rights to the Division I men’s basketball tournament, as well as those same NCAA championships.

NCAA President Charlie Baker told Sports Business Journal the deal is worth an average of $115 million annually. However, college golf won’t be included in the deal, an NCAA spokesperson confirmed to Golfweek.

The Division I men’s and women’s golf championships have a separate agreement with Golf Channel to broadcast the event, which this year moves to Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California, about 30 miles north of San Diego.

There shouldn’t be many changes to the broadcast, however, producer Brandt Packer won’t return. He was in charge of the NCAA Championship broadcasts in addition to numerous other golf productions for Golf Channel over the past two decades.

The Division I Women’s NCAA Championship is set to begin May 17 with the men starting a week later.

Amateur golf has never been stronger, and the schedule is looking great for another spectacular year in 2024.

There’s going to be a major change where fans go to get their college golf scores beginning this fall.

Spikemark Golf will become the provider for all golf scoring and ranking services utilized by the NCAA, beginning with the 2023-24 season. Spikemark will transition into the service role previously provided by Golfstat.

“We are pleased to announce Spikemark as manager for NCAA golf scoring and ranking services,” Joni Comstock, NCAA senior vice president of championships, said in a release. “Spikemark’s effective use of current technologies, including the implementation of a transparent ranking system with daily updates, will provide a statistical approach that has been widely adopted throughout the golf community, and one that will positively impact the user experience for our membership and the championships.

“On behalf of the collegiate golf community, we want to express our sincere gratitude to Golfstat and specifically to the late Mark Laesch and the Laesch family for their many years of partnership and dedication to collegiate golf.”

Spikemark, created and founded by former collegiate player and coach, Derek Freeman, will have a new website and mobile app that are designed to meet the needs of collegiate golf at every level. Spikemark provides tournament scoring, real-time leaderboards, detailed statistics, in-depth analytics and media, allowing fans to keep track of their favorite teams and players. Spikemark also provides real-time access to team schedules, up-to-date results and the latest rankings.

Spikemark’s ranking system was developed in collaboration with Mark Broadie, who is widely known for his development of the Official World Golf Ranking algorithm and the modern statistical approach using “Strokes Gained” statistics. Broadie is also a 20-year member of the USGA’s handicap research team.

“We’re incredibly excited and deeply honored at Spikemark to join the NCAA family as the new golf scoring and ranking provider. Spikemark’s platform is designed to foster a robust and vibrant community around collegiate golf by utilizing modern technology that incorporates an engaging user experience for coaches, players, and fans,” Freeman said in a release.

Which school has the most NCAA women’s golf team championships?

Who has the most women’s college golf national titles?

There are very few “dynasties” in women’s college golf. When it comes to national championships, however, one thing is certain: The addition of match play at the NCAA Women’s Championship in 2015 brings more teams into the mix.

The following list gives a picture of the top teams’ postseason prowess. Arizona State and Duke, with eight and seven national titles, respectively, top the list.

The NCAA only documents national champions since the 1982 season. Beginning in 1971, the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women governed women’s college athletics and administered the national championship. The AIAW, as it was known, discontinued sponsorship of national championships after the 1981-82 academic year and was later dissolved. Before the AIAW’s formation, the Division for Girls’ and Women’s Sports organized women’s intercollegiate championships.

The following list mentions AIAW titles, when they are notable, but only NCAA titles make up each school’s official championship count for the purposes of this list.

Which school has the most NCAA men’s golf team championships?

Who has the most men’s college golf national titles?

National champions have been crowned in men’s collegiate golf dating to 1897.

The Intercollegiate Golf Association, which was later re-named as the National Intercollegiate Golf Association, sponsored the season-end tournament from 1897-1938.

In that time frame, Yale dominated, earning 20 NIGA titles from 1897-1936, including nine consecutive from 1905-1913. The Bulldogs’ lone NCAA Championship came in 1943. Ivy League-rival Princeton has 11 NIGA titles of their own, dominating the 1920s. They as well have just one NCAA title (1940). Harvard also won six in seven years from 1898-1904, and Michigan won consecutive titles in 1934-35.

For the last 81 years, starting in 1939, the NCAA has assumed responsibility. Thirty schools have won NCAA titles, including 15 multi-time winners. That begs the question: Who has the most?
