Georgia football bowl projection after conference championships

Georgia football is expected to miss the College Football Playoff and play in the New Year’s Six bowl

The Georgia Bulldogs (12-1) lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1) in the SEC championship. Thanks to wins by Florida State (13-0) and Michigan (13-0), the SEC was expected to be left outside of the College Football Playoff. However, the selection committee picked Alabama over Florida State in a shocking turn of events.

Texas’ win at Alabama and dominant performance against Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship should give the Longhorns the edge over the Crimson Tide.

Georgia’s loss to Alabama is deflating, but college football season is not over yet. The Bulldogs will play in a New Year’s Six bowl game, which would have been a fantastic year for Georgia before the Kirby Smart era.

Update: Georgia is expected to play Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

What bowl game is Georgia projected to play in? 247Sports projects Georgia play against Penn State (10-2) in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia. The Nittany Lions have a ferocious defense, but a lackluster offense.

Georgia’s 29-game winning streak ended in Saturday’s SEC Championship Game to Alabama. … If Georgia misses the final four, it would become the first team to be ranked No. 1 entering the final weekend and not get in. Penn State finished with 10 wins and we’re expecting the Nittany Lions to get the New Year’s Six nod over fellow 10-win teams Ole Miss and Oklahoma.

The College Football Playoff committee will select the four top teams at noon ET.

After the playoff is selected, bowl games will be announced throughout the remainder of the day.

Three Bulldogs opt out of upcoming bowl game

Three Georgia football players make decision to opt out of bowl game, ending their time in Athens playing for the Bulldogs.

Three Bulldogs who have played pivotal roles within the team have decided to opt out of Georgia’s upcoming bowl game, ending their time in the red and black.  Among those players are graduate senior tight end Tre’ McKitty, senior defensive back DJ Daniel and senior inside linebacker Monty Rice.

UGASports.com initially broke the news, followed by multiple reports confirming the opt outs.

No. 8 ranked Georgia (7-2) could very well play Clemson in the Orange Bowl, should Notre Dame beat the Tigers in the ACC Championship Game today.  If Clemson comes out on top, the projection is that Georgia will likely face off against Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl.

Isaiah Wilson, J.R Reed and Andrew Thomas all skipped last year’s Sugar Bowl victory over Baylor and Deandre Baker skipped the Sugar Bowl during the 2018-19 season.  This is starting to become a trend, especially for Georgia’s defensive players trying to stay healthy for the NFL draft.

There are still some question marks surrounding other players on the Dawgs’ roster.  UGASports additionally reported that defensive backs Mark Webb, Richard LeCounte and Eric Stokes are also leaning towards an opt out, as is offensive guard Ben Cleveland.

Although this season didn’t turn out how Dawgs fans wanted, there is a bright future in Athens with head coach Kirby Smart locking in the 3rd best recruiting class in the nation so far.  Georgia’s bowl game will be announced Sunday afternoon following the conference championships on Saturday.

UGA football: ESPN sets Sugar Bowl broadcast crew

The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-ranked Baylor Bears are facing off in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

ESPN announced the 2020 Sugar Bowl broadcast crew: Sean McDonough, Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe. The crew will be on-hand for the game between the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-ranked Baylor Bears.

Georgia is back in the Sugar Bowl after falling to Texas last season in the same game. Kirby Smart and the Dawgs will look to bring home a win this time around. There’s a late 8:45 P.M. kickoff for this New Year’s Day game.

It should be a fun one. Baylor had the best defense in the Big 12 and Georgia had the best defense in the SEC. Expect a slugfest.

UGA facing Baylor in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl

The Georgia Bulldogs checked in fifth in the final College Football Playoff rankings. Georgia will play seventh-ranked Baylor in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The game will be another late night kickoff: 8:45.

Both Georgia and Baylor lost in their respective conference championship games. The Baylor Bears put up more of a fight than Georgia did, but ultimately fell to Oklahoma 30-23 in overtime. Baylor will be very motivated for the Sugar Bowl, which is their best bowl game in a couple of years. The Bears lost in the 2015 Cotton Bowl to Michigan State and the 2014 Fiesta Bowl in their two most recent New Years’ bowl games.

Georgia must circle the wagons after their 37-10 blowout defeat in the SEC Championship to Joe Burrow and LSU’s unstoppable offense. Several NFL Draft-eligible Bulldogs (Andrew Thomas, D’Andre Swift) may sit out the game. Kirby Smart must get the team more motivated than last season and start a more successful 2019-2020 off-season the right way: with a win over Baylor.

Last season, Georgia lost in the SEC Championship to Alabama, finished fifth in the final College Football Playoff rankings and then lost to Texas 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl. It’d feel like the Dawgs made progress if they won the Sugar Bowl this time.

Georgia football: Bulldogs must have better bowl game, off-season

The Georgia Bulldogs fell to the LSU Tigers 37-10 in the SEC Championship Game. LSU dominated and UGA’s offense never got rolling. Jake Fromm and Georgia receivers couldn’t get in sync all game (more on the receivers later).

All of this felt like a accumulation of Georgia’s weaknesses and errors adding up over the course of the season. But make no mistake about it. Georgia had a despicable off-season in 2018-2019 following the 2018 SEC Championship Game defeat to Alabama. Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs must bounce back better following the crushing loss against LSU.

Last year, following the 2018 SEC title game UGA’s Deandre Baker started the off-season slide when he won the Jim Thorpe Award. Baker set a tone for the off-season that was not ideal. Following winning the award Baker was quoted saying this:

“I’m playing in the Sugar Bowl,” Baker said, per Jake Rowe of 247Sports. “…I just wanted to finish it right with my teammates, that’s all.”

Baker went on to sit out Georgia’s bowl game against Texas: a multi-score defeat to Texas. Players who are going to sit out the bowl game need to decide soon and be honest about it. Coaches need to prepare with the guys they’ve got and start building momentum for 2020. Regardless of who shows up, Georgia needs a win to be making progress as a program.

Baker’s decision was one of the least notable things of the 2018-2019 off-season.

Receivers Mecole Hardman Jr., Riley Ridley, RB Elijah Holyfield, and tight end Isaac Nauta all declared for the NFL early following the Sugar Bowl loss. Georgia lost Justin Fields in a transfer to Ohio State. Fields would’ve looked mighty good in Georgia red and black this season.

Every player has the right to declare for the NFL early, but for many it is not the best choice. There’s no going back. Some players family situations prevent them from being in school. That being said, Holyfield and Nauta would’ve been served better staying in Athens. Each would’ve had large roles in the offense. Neither is set up for NFL success now. Players should do what’s best for them and their families at the end of the day.

Kirby Smart secured yet another talented recruiting class, but that was the least of UGA’s 2018-2019 off-season worries. Seven Georgia players were arrested in 2019 before the Dawgs suited up to play Vanderbilt. WR Jeremiah Holloman proved to be the most costly of UGA’s arrest-related off-season losses. Georgia never made up for his loss and struggled to stretch teams down the field, especially in loses to South Carolina and LSU. Fromm missed Holloman’s back shoulder fade ability as well.

How does UGA have a better off-season this time? Jake Fromm staying would help, but don’t count on that. If he leaves, it may be Georgia’s turn to land a talented QB transfer like D’Eriq King of Houston. Kirby Smart needs borderline players to return and/or not transfer.

Players leave programs and that’s a reality of college football in 2019. Smart must land more recruits. UGA’s class of 2020 is extremely talented, but the Dawgs only have fifteen commitments. They will look add about ten more. Smart needs to land a talented tight end in this class. Darnell Washington or Theo Johnson would be huge for UGA. It’s the most talented tight end class in years.

Lastly, Georgia must stay out of trouble. 2-3 arrests would be excellent in comparison to seven. Yes, last off-season all seven weren’t all serious offenses, but they hurt the team.
