Georgia football’s Swift likely out versus Baylor in Sugar Bowl

Georgia Bulldogs starting running back D’Andre Swift is expected to miss the Sugar Bowl against the Baylor Bears with a shoulder injury

The Georgia Bulldogs will be likely without star running back D’Andre Swift against the Baylor Bears. Heading into today, Swift’s status was uncertain and in doubt. Swift suffered a shoulder injury against Georgia Tech and then went on to play in a decreased role in the 2019 SEC Championship against the LSU Tigers.

Now, according to ESPN’s David Pollack, Swift is out for the Sugar Bowl:

While this isn’t official, it is an indication of what many are expecting. Georgia will miss Swift, who is their leading rusher on the season with 1,216 yards and eight total touchdowns. Swift is projected to be a high NFL Draft pick.

With Swift out, UGA will get a look at the future of the backfield: Zamir White, James Cook, and Kenny McIntosh. Look for one of them to have a breakout game with Brian Herrien also ruled out.

Georgia is additionally without three offensive line starters in Andrew Thomas, Ben Cleveland, and Isaiah Wilson. This will be a great test for the depth in UGA’s running game and new offensive line coach Matt Luke against the best defense in the Big 12 (if that means anything): Baylor.

Baylor QB Charlie Brewer will play in Sugar Bowl

Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer has officially been cleared by his coach to play in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl against Georgia football.

Baylor University head coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Friday leading up to the Wednesday night Sugar Bowl matchup against Georgia.

Rhule’s starting quarterback Charlie Brewer left the Big-12 championship game in the 2nd quarter on concussion protocol, but Rhule confirmed he has been cleared to play on New Years Day.

Brewer has had an excellent season, throwing for 2,950 yards, 20 TDs and only 6 INTs on a 65.2 completion percentage.  Brewer has also rushed for 337 yards and 10 TDs and will be vital for the Bears going up against the Dawgs defense.

Kickoff for the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl is set for 8:45 p.m. on January 1st at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

9 Sugar Bowl memories as Georgia prepares for Baylor

Georgia and Baylor will play in the 2020 Sugar Bowl. Looking at some of the great games in the past.

Georgia is back in the Sugar Bowl, a game that has seen the Bulldogs play in 10 times. There have been some storied battles in the Sugar Bowl involving the Dawgs and some incredible memories of contests featuring other schools.

A look back before Georgia faces Baylor.

Georgia and Baylor have met on four previous occasions, all in the regular season. The Bulldogs have won all four: 1972 (24-14), 1978 (16-14), 1985 (17-14), and 1989 (15-3).

Georgia in the Sugar Bowl:

Jan. 1, 1947, defeated North Carolina, 20-10
Jan. 1, 1969, lost to Arkansas, 16-2
Jan. 1, 1977, lost to Pittsburgh, 27-3
Jan. 1, 1981, defeated Notre Dame, 17-10
Jan. 1, 1982, lost to Pittsburgh, 24-20
Jan. 1, 1983, lost to Penn State, 27-23
Jan. 1, 2003, defeated Florida State, 26-13
*Jan. 1, 2006, lost to West Virginia 38-35
Jan. 1, 2008, defeated Hawaii, 41-10
Jan. 1, 2019, lost to Texas, 28-21
* played in Atlanta due to Hurricane Katrina

Many recaps are taken from the Sugar Bowl site, which credits the book “Sugar Bowl Classic: A History” by Marty Mulé, who covered the game and the organization for decades for the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

It was an ugly stat: in a game when Georgia needed air-support to keep defenders off tailback Herschel Walker, quarterback Buck Belue was 0-for-11 passing. With 2:05 to play, and the Bulldogs trying to protect a precarious touchdown lead, Belue was looking at a third-and-seven at midfield. He dropped back, looked, finally let loose, and completed his first – and only – pass, seven yards to Amp Arnold. That allowed Georgia to run out the clock, and secure its first consensus national title. Walker finished with 150 yards, 55 in the second half. His individual total may have been the most impressive rushing performance in Sugar Bowl history, considering his separated shoulder and the fact that his total was 30 yards more than his team’s. Take away Walker’s 36 carries and Georgia amassed a minus 30 yards of offense, partly due to four sacks of Belue. No winning team ever had such paltry figures in the Sugar Bowl.

Baylor QB expected to start in Sugar Bowl

Baylor QB Charlie Brewer is expected to start against Georgia football in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl after being under concussion protocol

Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer is reportedly expected to play in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl matchup against Georgia, per Matt Mosley of PressBoxDFW.

Brewer was sidelined in the second quarter of the Big-12 Championship game with a head injury and has not been active in practice.  He has been on concussion protocol since exiting the contest, but is expected to play in the New Years Day matchup against the Dawgs.

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule will give an official statement on Friday about the state of his QB.

The Bears will likely need Brewer if they want to get past the Bulldogs stellar defense.  Brewer has thrown for 2,950 yards, 20 TDs and 6 INTs this season along with a 65.2 completion percentage.  He has also rushed for another 337 yards and 10 TDs, helping the Bears to a 2nd place finish in the Big-12 with their only two losses coming against Oklahoma.

UGA football: ESPN sets Sugar Bowl broadcast crew

The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-ranked Baylor Bears are facing off in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

ESPN announced the 2020 Sugar Bowl broadcast crew: Sean McDonough, Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe. The crew will be on-hand for the game between the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the seventh-ranked Baylor Bears.

Georgia is back in the Sugar Bowl after falling to Texas last season in the same game. Kirby Smart and the Dawgs will look to bring home a win this time around. There’s a late 8:45 P.M. kickoff for this New Year’s Day game.

It should be a fun one. Baylor had the best defense in the Big 12 and Georgia had the best defense in the SEC. Expect a slugfest.

Everything Georgia football fans need to know about Baylor

Georgia won each prior meeting, but the game in New Orleans will be the first in which they’ve faced each other outside Sanford Stadium.

With conference championship week having come to a close, bowl season is upon us. The Georgia Bulldogs are headed to the Sugar Bowl to square off with the Baylor Bears, with whom they’ve competed four times across the programs’ histories.

Georgia won each prior meeting, but the contest in New Orleans will be the first in which the Dawgs have faced the Bears outside Sanford Stadium. It will be the first time the teams have played since 1989.

Baylor and Georgia enter the game with identical records (11-2), both having lost one regular season game and their respective conference title games.

The Bears’ two losses both came against playoff-bound Oklahoma by a combined ten points.

Led by third-year head coach Matt Rhule, Baylor will make its second consecutive bowl game following an incredible turnaround: the Bears finished with just one regular season win in Rhule’s first season, six in his second, and eleven in 2019.

Georgia’s second-longest active bowl streak continues with a second consecutive trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl. It will be Baylor’s first Sugar Bowl appearance since 1957, when the Bears shocked a second-ranked and previously undefeated Tennessee Volunteers squad by a score of thirteen to seven.

Baylor possesses a balanced, powerful offense that averages 257 yards passing and 175 yards rushing per game.

However, The Bears’ powerful offense may arrive to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome shorthanded; starting quarterback Charlie Brewer was knocked out early in the second quarter of this weekend’s Big XII Championship and stayed sidelined for the remainder of the game.

Backup quarterback Gerry Bohanon, who was also recruited by UGA, was later replaced by third-string QB Jacob Zeno against Oklahoma. Zeno led a comeback that took his team to overtime before coming up short. Prior to his team’s most recent game against the Sooners, Bohanon had attempted just 21 passes wearing green and gold. Zeno has attempted nine passes all year.

Baylor has a run-first offense, attempting 82 more rushes than passes in 2019 (476 to 394).

If Brewer, who’s posted a solid 20:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio with a 65% completion rate, remains out, expect an even heavier rushing attack procured by the Bears’ massive offensive linemen (three of whom have played together for over three years). Behind them, shifty tailbacks JaMycal Hasty and John Lovett have combined for 1251 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.

On Defense, Baylor hasn’t allowed north of 30 points all year to anyone who doesn’t attend school in Norman, Oklahoma. This group of players amounts to one of the most physical defenses the team has produced in years, nearly half-full of seniors (Henry Black, Jameson Houston, James Lockhart, Chris Miller and Blake Lynch) all playing the best statistical season of each of their college careers.

They give up just 19.3 points per game facing an injury-plagued Georgia team that has failed to score over 27 points in all but one game (against Georgia Tech) since their first loss of the season to South Carolina two months ago.

Baylor presents a cohesive defensive unit against a rattled Silver Britches offense. Whether their signal caller is missing or not, the Bears are not to be underestimated.

The Georgia Bulldogs lost a tough one this past Saturday, falling to LSU in the SEC Championship by a score of 37-10.  The Dawgs have lost SEC Championships two years in a row, and have dropped from #4 in the CFP rankings to #5 yet again.  Oklahoma jumped to the #4 spot after their Big 12 Championship win over Baylor.

The Dawgs will play in the Sugar Bowl for a 2nd straight year and open as 7.5 point favorites over the Baylor Bears.

Most teams in the college football world would kill for a chance to play in the Sugar Bowl, but for Dawgs fans it feels like more of a consolation game than anything.  Last year hit a little bit harder due to dropping after an incredible game against Alabama in the SEC Championship.

Georgia opened the Sugar Bowl last year to Texas as two touchdown favorites, but we all know how that went.

Georgia will be without some key contributors, including Dominick Blaylock, Lawrence Cager and possibly a few starters who are headed to the pros  Hopefully Kirby Smart and the Dawgs can pull out an impressive victory and go into next season with a chip on their shoulder and smile on their faces.

The Sugar Bowl kicks off at 8:45 p.m. on New Years Day in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, and will be airing on ESPN.

The Georgia Bulldogs checked in fifth in the final College Football Playoff rankings. Georgia will play seventh-ranked Baylor in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The game will be another late night kickoff: 8:45.

Both Georgia and Baylor lost in their respective conference championship games. The Baylor Bears put up more of a fight than Georgia did, but ultimately fell to Oklahoma 30-23 in overtime. Baylor will be very motivated for the Sugar Bowl, which is their best bowl game in a couple of years. The Bears lost in the 2015 Cotton Bowl to Michigan State and the 2014 Fiesta Bowl in their two most recent New Years’ bowl games.

Georgia must circle the wagons after their 37-10 blowout defeat in the SEC Championship to Joe Burrow and LSU’s unstoppable offense. Several NFL Draft-eligible Bulldogs (Andrew Thomas, D’Andre Swift) may sit out the game. Kirby Smart must get the team more motivated than last season and start a more successful 2019-2020 off-season the right way: with a win over Baylor.

Last season, Georgia lost in the SEC Championship to Alabama, finished fifth in the final College Football Playoff rankings and then lost to Texas 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl. It’d feel like the Dawgs made progress if they won the Sugar Bowl this time.
