Villanova vs Georgetown Game Preview

Why Georgetown Will Win

Georgetown can hit the boards.

The defense might not be anything great, and it might not force a whole lot of mistakes, but it’s able to hit the boards hard and should be able to come up with enough offensive rebounds to come up with plenty of second chance points.

The Hoyas lost the first time around 85-74, but they were able to make almost all of their free throws and weren’t hit all that hard from the outside.

Keep Villanova off the free throw line and hot it to under ten made threes, and Georgetown will be doing its job to keep this close.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Villanova Will Win

Georgetown has lost 15 straight for a reason.

Yeah, it can rebound, but it’s awful at guarding teams from the outside – almost everyone hits 40% from three lately against this defense – and there’s just not enough rebounds to be had. It has allowed teams to make 45% or more of its shots in the last five games, and letting teams hit half of their shots has been close to the norm.

Villanova might not be consistent lately from three, but it’s great from the field and amazing on the free throw line. Georgetown doesn’t have the defense to hold up.

What’s Going To Happen

Everyone is getting fat on the Hoya defense, and now Villanova gets to have its turn again.

Even if the threes aren’t dropping like they normally are, the Wildcats will still do far more from the outside than the Hoyas will, and they’ll pull away by being terrific on the free throw line.

Providence vs Georgetown Game Preview

Why Providence Will Win

It’s totally cliché, but Providence has figured out how to win.

It’s been able to win in close fights, it’s been able to win in shootouts, and it’s been able to adjust on the fly like the senior-loaded team that it is.

It’s a smart team that doesn’t give up a lot of mistakes, is okay at moving the ball around for the extra pass, and there aren’t a whole lot of fouls.

The defense might not be a rock, and it doesn’t force enough turnovers, but it’s tough at guarding the three.

The Georgetown defense has had a boatload of problems lately. It couldn’t handle Providence from the outside in the first meeting – an 83-75 loss on the road – and it’s not getting any consistent scoring inside lately. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Georgetown Will Win

The team knows how to rebound.

If you’re coached by Patrick Ewing, you’re going to hit the boards.

The problem is that the rebounds are there because there are way too many misses. However, it’s a tough team on the glass that will get its share of chances and putbacks to stay in games.

The threes fell the first time around, but Providence was too good on the inside. Keep firing from three – Georgetown leads the Big East in three-point shooting – own the glass on both ends, and play loose.

This is a team that will get cold once in a while, but …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Providence has no problem playing low scoring games. Georgetown can’t afford that.

78 points. Georgetown is 6-0 this season when it gets more than 77, and it’s 0-14 when it doesn’t.

Providence has allowed more than 77 points just twice. Georgetown won’t be able to crank up the offense enough.

Ryan Mutombo follows in father’s footsteps, commits to Georgetown

Ryan Mutombo, son of Dikembe Mutombo, has committed to Georgetown.

Ryan Mutombo has decided to play in his father’s footsteps and play his college basketball for Patrick Ewing at Georgetown.

Mutombo, son of Georgetown legend and eight-time NBA All-Star Dikembe Mutombo, committed to the Hoyas on Sunday night. Mutombo ultimately picked Georgetown over programs such as Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and Stanford.

“Legit size with long arms and a sturdy frame,” 247Sports’ Evan Daniels said in Mutombo’s scouting report. “Has terrific hands & touch around the basket. Good feel as a passer out of the high post and on the block. Shot the ball from the mid-range area with confidence, and mechanics are fine. Impressive feel for the game and a high IQ. Good area rebounder and rim protector. Lacks lift and just gets end-to-end OK. True low post player. A late bloomer with major upside.”

According to 247Sports, Mutombo is the No. 71 recruit in the class of 2021, No. 13 center and No. 3 prospect in Georgia. He is also the fourth commitment in Georgetown’s 2021 recruiting class, joining Tyler Beard, Jalin Billingsley and Jordan Riley.

College coaches all want to pretend they’re different. John Thompson actually was.

The former Georgetown coach fought for his players’ rights long before it was the popular thing to do.

John Thompson, the longtime Georgetown coach who won 596 games and led the Hoyas to three Final Fours and the school’s first national championship in 1984, died at the age of 78 according to friends and family. The cause of death is unknown at this point.

Thompson was one of the most important coaches in college basketball history. The Hall of Fame coach was an advocate for college athletes long before it was widely accepted as the right thing to do. He was seen as a father figure to his players, an overwhelming majority of whom were black, but he said he was uncomfortable with that label.

“I am not a father figure to my players,” Thomspon once said. “They all have parents, mothers and fathers, and I think you insult those people when you call me a father image to their sons. It is not my intention to be a crusader for this cause or that cause. I don’t want to be a social worker.”

Thompson may have been reluctant to accept the role of savior, but for many in and around the D.C. area, that’s what he was. During his Hall of Fame induction speech, Allen Iverson, who played for Thompson at Georgetown in the mid-90s, credited his college coach for saving his life.

Thompson stressed the importance of education, as evidenced by that 97% graduation rate, but he was also a realist and made sure his players understood how money dictated nearly everything in life.

“I think more change has come about because of economics because people totally disregard color barriers if you have economic value,” Thompson said.

Education was a means to that end. At least a means that Thompson had some control over as a coach at a major university who had scholarships to hand out. And he fought hard to keep that avenue to education open for everyone. Thompson vehemently opposed the NCAA’s Propositions 42 and 48, which would deny athletic scholarships for incoming freshmen who failed to meet academic qualifications, and even protested the rule by walking off the court before a game against Boston College.

“What I hope to do is to bring attention to the fact that [Proposal 42] is very much discriminatory,” Thompson said at the time. “I’m beginning to feel like the kid from the lower socio-economic background who has been invited to dinner, had dessert, and now is being asked to leave.”

The rule would require incoming freshmen to maintain a GPA of 2.0 and to score at least 700 on the SAT. Thompson said he had no problem with the GPA requirement but pointed out that the SAT test “had been proven to be racially biased.”

“I don’t think that College Boards were ever meant to be used [as exclusion,]” Thomspon said. “I think it was meant to determine where people were, not to determine where people could go.”

Standing up to the NCAA was no big deal for Thompson. Years earlier he had stood up to D.C.’s most notorious drug dealer. Rayful Edmond, a gang leader who was responsible for the murder of dozens of district residents, had struck up a relationship with several Georgetown players, including future NBA all-star Alonzo Morning. Thompson didn’t like that and set up a meeting with Edmond to let him know it…

Some coaches may have looked the other way. After all, Edmond was offering Georgetown players benefits Thompson obviously couldn’t provide himself. The most cynical coaches out there may have seen it as a recruiting advantage, but not Thompson.

Thompson was not without his flaws. He’s been characterized as a bully and there are several former players who have said they felt abandoned by the coach after their time as a Hoya ended. But Thompson recognized those flaws and did not shy away from them.

“Usually, there is a good guy or a bad guy,” Thompson once said. “I’m not interested in being the bad guy. Who is? But I don’t know if I’m the good guy either. I make mistakes. I get angry. Sometimes I work the kids too hard. I’m like any other coach — I’d love to have them concentrate on basketball. I have people on my staff who help me control those feelings. I need that check. I am not trying to be anything other than what I am, and I’m really not certain what that is.”

I’d have to disagree with Thompson one thing there: He was not “like any other coach.” He was different, which is why he stood out — and not only in the relatively small landscape of college basketball. Even in the most powerful city in the world, Thompson stood out. He was bigger than basketball and his legacy extends far beyond what his Hoya teams accomplished on the court.

Georgia basketball offers scholarship to Ryan Mutombo

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a basketball scholarship to center Ryan Mutombo, the son of Dikembe Mutombo.

Tom Crean and the Georgia Bulldogs have offered a basketball scholarship to center Ryan Mutombo. Mutombo is a senior at Lovett School and is from Atlanta, Georgia.

Mutombo is the son of NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, who was an eight-time all-star and a four-time defensive player of the year. Mutombo’s number fifty-five jersey is retired for the Atlanta Hawks and Denver Nuggets.

Ryan Mutombo will play much of his career in his father’s shadow according to the media, but Mutombo has a chance to make a name for himself. At six-foot-eleven, Mutombo has great size and is a talented four-star recruit. He’s a member of the class of 2021.

He was excited to receive an offer from the University of Georgia:

We’ll keep you updated throughout Mutombo’s recruitment. He’d be a great addition to Georgia’s class of 2021.

Dikembe Mutombo attended Georgetown during his college days. Will Ryan Mutombo follow in his footsteps or opt to go to FSU, Clemson, Georgia, or many of the other schools that have offered him?

Patrick Ewing’s son gives encouraging update on NBA legend’s bout with coronavirus

Patrick Ewing is doing well days after announcing he had tested positive for coronavirus.

Four days after Patrick Ewing announced on Twitter that he had tested positive for coronavirus and had been admitted to the hospital for treatment, the Georgetown head coach and Knicks legend is now home and recovering, according to his son Patrick Ewing Jr.

Ewing Jr., who followed in his father’s footsteps by playing ball at Georgetown and making a Final Four, announced on Twitter that the elder Ewing was doing fine after receiving treatment at the hospital and thanked the doctors and nurses who looked after him during his stay. He also thanked all of the fans who sent their regards after Ewing’s announcement.

Ewing is 57 and has been coaching Georgetown’s basketball team since 2017. The Hoyas have gone 49-46 under his watch.

Before taking over his alma mater, Ewing spent 15 years as an assistant coach in the NBA. Before that, he made 11 NBA All-Star teams and won two Olympic gold medals. He was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.

Georgia basketball a finalist for coveted transfer E.J. Anosike

Georgia basketball is in the running for elite Sacred Heart forward E.J. Anosike.

Georgia basketball is in the running to land Sacred Heart graduate transfer EJ Anosike.

Anosike, a 6-foot-7 forward, has trimmed his list to Louisville, Wake Forest, Georgetown, Georgia, Boston College, Gonzaga and Tennessee.

“I will make this decision with my family based on the information we have gathered and the relationships we have built,” Anosike said in a Twitter post. “I will make this decision and announcement later this week.”

Anosike is the brother of former Lady Vols basketball player Nicky Anosike (2004-08).

During the 2019-20 season, his redshirt junior year, he averaged 15.7 points and 11.6 rebounds per game (6th in NCAA) for the Pioneers, whose season ended in the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinal. He put up 18 double-doubles in 33 games for Sacred Heart

He told 247Sports that he plans to announce his decision on Friday.

Tristan Freeman of Fansided’s BustingBrackets took an in-depth dive into each of the seven teams on Anosike’s list.

Here is his analysis of Anosike to Georgia:

Despite having likely top-3 NBA Draft pick Anthony Edwards on the roster, the Bulldogs finished at .500 overall on the season and in the bottom-tier of the SEC. Even with forward Rayshaun Hammonds coming back at the center spot, Georgia would still be a fairly young team next year with little hope of making the NCAA Tournament.

Anosike also wouldn’t have much great surrounding perimeter talent outside of Sahvir Wheeler and head coach Tom Crean hasn’t been known as a great developer of talent despite the recruiting success. Minutes would be there at the four-spot but the wins won’t.

How to watch Xavier vs. Georgetown: Preview, date and time

Live stream #1 Kansas at Kansas State

The road to the Final Four is heating up and both Georgetown and Xavier are fighting for a bid into the NCAA tournament. A win today would go a long way towards helping one of these teams. You can watch Xavier vs. Georgetown CBB streams only on CBS All Access.

Xavier is fresh off a win over DePaul and have won five of their last seven games, including a 74-62 win over then-No. 10 Seton Hall. But with just three games remaining, the Musketeers’ time is running out to build up a March Madness resume and make a serious bid. Though Georgetown has had its troubles this season, a win over them would go a long way to finding them in the NCAA tournament.

Georgetown has seen a ton of injuries hurt them to start 2020. Heading into this one guard Mac McClung and center Omer Yurtseven are questionable. If either player can suit up and play meaningful minutes, it’ll greatly help the Hoyas chances.
