Georgetown powerfully dedicated its first Big East title game appearance to late coach Tasha Butts

This story will make you want to cry and run through a wall at the same time.

The Georgetown women’s basketball team’s improbable season isn’t so far-fetched after all. After punching their ticket to the Big East title game for the first time in program history, senior Kelsey Ransom credited their late coach, Tasha Butts, who passed away from cancer in 2023.

In October 2023, Georgetown women’s basketball coach Tasha Butts passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. The basketball community and the Georgetown women’s basketball team have been mourning since then. This season, the team has been donning pink ribbons on their jerseys with two T’s on each side of the ribbon for “Tasha Tough.” They’ve used that strength to forge a path to play in the Big East championship game for the first time, turning heartbreak into triumph.

The best part? They did it on Butts’ birthday.

When asked why the team was able to do it, senior Kelsey Ransom shared this brief but powerful message:

“Man, I love you, Coach Tasha. I wish you were here to see this, but it’s ‘Tasha Tough’ always. We did it for her this year.”

Just a reminder that Mac McClung’s high school mixtape was electric

Mac McClung was brilliant even in high school.

On Saturday night, Mac McClung won the Slam Dunk competition as part of the NBA All-Star weekend. It marks his second straight win in the event.

But those who know…well, they know. And what they know is that McClung has been producing highlights for years, dating back to high school.

McClung was electric, producing jaw-dropping plays and showing off some impressive hops. But despite being one of the nation’s top scorers, the 6-foot-1 guard didn’t register a ton of big-time recruiting interest.

Sure, he had some offers like Boston College, Rutgers and Seton Hall, but McClung’s output on the court was not matched by any interest from college basketball’s blue bloods.

Ranked a three-star and the No. 49 point guard (by Rivals) in the nation out of Gate City (Gate City, Virginia), McClung had originally committed to Rutgers basketball in early August 2017. Three months later, he had de-committed from the Big Ten program just before his senior season.

By mid-October, he had veraballed to Patrick Ewing at Georgetown.

Watch this highlight film and it is hard to figure out why he didn’t have many other big-time offers. His athleticism alone should have made him a matter of intrigue for bigger programs.

Combine that with his scoring ability and McClung should have been a four-star recruit, easily.

Here are his highlights from his senior season at Gate City. The flair he showed on Saturday night in the NBA Slam Dunk competition was certainly not in short supply as a high school senior:

In college, he averaged 14.2 points per game in his first two seasons at Georgetown. He transferred to Texas Tech for the 2020-21 season, where in 29 games (all starts) he averaged 15.5 points per game while shooting 41.9 percent from the floor.

Currently, McClung is in the G League with the Osceola Magic where he is still looking to fully break through to the NBA. He has played in four NBA games, averaging 8.3 points per game.

Georgetown coach Ed Cooley challenged young reporters to get tougher after Rutgers loss: ‘This [expletive] is real’

“Grow up and learn to ask a great question.”

Ed Cooley is having a rocky start to his career with the Georgetown Hoyas, and he’s seemingly asking those around him, including the media, to be better.

The men’s basketball coach is three games into his coaching tenure in Washington D.C. His team won its first game but has now lost back-to-back games, including a tough one Wednesday to Rutgers.

True to form, Jersey Mike’s Arena lived up to its reputation as a brutal environment. Cooley and his players didn’t exactly get the red-carpet treatment from the Rutgers student section, who broke into a colorful chant of the four-letter word variety mid-game. (Warning: NSFW language.)

Afterward, Cooley admitted to the media in the room that the atmosphere was challenging, and so was playing Rutgers. Still, the ending to Georgetown’s post-game presser raised some eyebrows.

(Warning: more NSFW language.)

In a clip posted to Rutgers’ YouTube account, all was seemingly well until Cooley took exception to the overall demeanor of some reporters in the press conference.

“If I could say something to all you young writers: when you have the opportunity, and you’re sitting in a room like this, the only way you’re going to get better is by having the courage to ask a question in these type of situations,” Cooley said, stroking his chin.

He then addressed potentially what he felt was too quiet of a room and not enough “great” questions. “Don’t sit in here and just be in awe. This [expletive] is real.”

It’s unclear from the video who was in the room, but Cooley is not wrong for asking for more accountable journalism. However, if he felt some young writers needed to jump at the opportunity to grow, he also had to create a welcoming environment for them. Here’s every question asked before Cooley’s rant:

  • Early offense got you back into the game in the first half, but it didn’t carry over into the second. What happened?
  • Would it mean a lot to you for the Big East to pull [out a win in the Gavit Games] and how do you think the Big East has done with the Gavit Games so far?
  • Dontrez Styles played pretty well in the first half, then struggled a little bit in the second and got hurt. Has he now established his base line with you in terms of production?
  • What did you think of Rutgers’ guards?
  • Rowan [Brumbaugh], how would you rate your performance today, personally?
  • What other differences did Rutgers provide from this year to last year?

Not exactly the best questions and certainly nowhere near the worst, though there’s nothing inherently wrong with Cooley’s advice.

It is worth remembering this was an away game with presumably less Georgetown-focused media. Those who did make the trip to cover the Hoyas are also just three games into the season. They haven’t had the opportunity to learn Cooley’s style or how to thoughtfully ask questions to him in a way that draws out the best answer. That has to be learned over time, just as he is learning to coach his new team and bring out the best in them.

A little bit of grace and understanding goes a long way.

Watch: Cliff Omoruyi has two dunks in the opening 13 seconds as Rutgers beats Georgetown

Rutgers basketball got a big win over Georgetown on Wednesday night.

Cliff Omoruyi started the game in impressive fashion, with two dunks in the game’s opening 13 seconds. He set the tone for Rutgers as they beat Georgetown 71-60 in the Gavitt Games.

After losing their season opener to Princeton, Rutgers has now won three straight games. Georgetown drops to 1-2.

Omoruyi finished with eight points and six rebounds in 27 minutes played. He was 4-of-7 on shooting and had four blocks.

This was an important win for Rutgers, albeit against a rebuilding opponent. Georgetown, under head coach Ed Cooley, has pieced together some talented pieces and should be able to contend for the postseason this year. Getting a win against the Hoyas is a good resume builder for Rutgers as well as a confidence booster.

Sophomore guard Derek Simpson led Rutgers with 15 points. Freshman guard Jamichael Davis, who played 21 minutes, impressed with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting.

They next play Howard on Saturday at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

Watch: Georgetown gets commitment from 4-star center Thomas Sorber

However, this week the Hoyas finally earned a significant victory in the recruiting department.

Historic college basketball powerhouse Georgetown has been lagging behind the competition for the last couple of seasons, winning just 13 total games and losing 50. However, this week the Hoyas finally earned a significant victory in the recruiting department.

In this video, Archbishop Ryan (Pa.) four-star center Thomas Sorber announced his commitment to Georgetown on Wednesday.

Sorber (6-foot-9, 250 pounds) had offers from eight other schools, including La Salle, Maryland, Miami, Penn State, Providence, Richmond, Syracuse and Villanova.

Going by the 247Sports composite rankings, Sorber is the No. 13 center in the class of 2024. He also ranks fifth overall in the state of Pennsylvania and No. 68 nationally.

Sorber is Georgetown’s second hard commit of the 2024 cycle. The other is Worcester Academy (Mass.) four-star shooting guard Kayvaun Mulready. Together they rank No. 8 in the country.

Georgetown gets commitments from a pair of 4-star recruits

Georgetown got a double recruiting bonus this week.

Georgetown got a double recruiting bonus this week, scoring commitments from a pair of four-star recruits who have followed new head coach Ed Cooley from Providence.

On Tuesday afternoon, Southern California Academy (Calif.) center Drew Fielder chose Georgetown after decommitting from Providence.

Fielder (6-foot-9, 215 pounds) is ranked No. 17 among centers in the class of 2023. He had offers from 28 other programs.

Fielder told On3 that he chose Georgetown because of his relationship with Cooley.

“I chose Georgetown because of my relationship with coach (Ed) Cooley, I really trust what he’s saying and I really believe that he believes in me. He believes we can make Georgetown really good together. They have a good history and we want to keep that going. Keep the history of elite bigs coming through. I’m really excited.”

Not an hour later, Georgetown pulled off another recruiting coup – getting Worcester (Mass.) four-star shooting guard Kayvaun Mulready to commit.

Mulready echoed the same sentiment as Fielder, crediting coach Cooley with his decision, per On3.

“Coach Cooley is an outstanding coach and person and someone who I have a lot of trust and faith in… We’ve built a great relationship from last summer and it’s been getting even stronger since. I know thats someone who I want to play for.”

Mulready (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) is ranked No. 22 among shooting guards in the class of 2024, second in the state and No. 98 overall. He had 15 other offers.

Texas basketball might need to act fast for one transfer portal center

Texas may have to contend with Providence and Memphis to land one transfer portal big man.

College basketball free agency is underway just before the NCAA Tournament. It appears two Tournament participants are targeting TCU transfer center Eddie Lampkin for next season.

It would appear Providence head coach Ed Cooley and Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway are working to bring Lampkin to their respective teams. Albeit, it’s fair to question to which team Ed Cooley is recruiting Lampkin.

Cooley has been rumored as a possibility to fill the head coaching vacancy for the legendary basketball program at Georgetown. Regardless of where he coaches, Cooley has a strong pitch that will be difficult to beat.

It’s apparent that Texas will need bigs next season. The Longhorns could bring back Dylan Mitchell to pair with elite Duncanville talent Ron Holland. Even so, neither would give the team the defensive post presence it needs.

With Dylan Disu’s return uncertain and Christian Bishop departing, Texas could use a taller player or two through the transfer portal. Whether or not Lampkin is a priority, that position is a pressing need.

Texas’ search for post players will be worth monitoring over the summer.

Speculation swirls around Bobby Hurley as Arizona State fades away in 2023

Coaching carousel speculation is already in high gear. Bobby Hurley might want the St. John’s or Georgetown jobs.

Arizona State is an NIT team right now, and the Sun Devils’ path to the NCAA Tournament is narrowing. The Sun Devils will definitely need to beat either UCLA or Arizona in the coming weeks, and they will probably need to grab at least one other high-value win while avoiding bad losses. ASU doesn’t have much breathing room in the pursuit of an NCAA bid. If the Sun Devils miss out, coach Bobby Hurley might think about a change of scenery.

(h/t Kevin Sweeney of Sports Illustrated)

“Hurley is in a unique spot,” Sweeney wrote. “He could realistically be fired or extended, or leave for another job this coming offseason. Conventional wisdom was that Hurley cooled his seat with a 6–1 start in Pac-12 play, but since then Arizona State has lost five of six to fall to the wrong side of the NCAA tournament bubble. It’s an all-too-familiar script for the Sun Devils under Hurley, who’ve often gotten out to hot starts before fading late.

“ASU’s résumé is still in decent shape, so sneaking into the Big Dance is well within the realm of possibility. But should he fall short, it’d be hard to justify an extension with his contract set to expire in 2024. And regardless of whether he saves his job in Tempe this spring, don’t be surprised if Hurley tries to get involved with jobs back East.”

Those jobs: St. John’s and Georgetown. St. John’s could fire coach Mike Anderson. Georgetown and Patrick Ewing are almost certain to get a divorce at the end of the season. This will be a fascinating set of plot points to monitor.

Utterly bizarre sequence in Georgetown-Northwestern features multiple possession changes, zero points

Okay, this was confusing.

That is a lot of work not to come away with a bucket.

In Georgetown basketball’s home matchup against Northwestern on Tuesday night, nonsense abounded on a strange run that featured multiple possession changes and no points for either team.

It’s hard to exactly describe what happened on this sequence, but both teams had clear lanes to get some sort of offensive momentum before fumbling the bag with real aplomb.

The ball isn’t always going to bounce your way, but these teams seemed allergic to scoring here. It had to be frustrating for neither team to come away from this moment but anything but scratched heads and bummed vibes.

Yikes, guys. The game of basketball can move as quickly as lava, but this moment just looked as confused on the court as it did from the couch.

There was still plenty of time for both teams to shake off this strange sequence, because honestly, what else can you do in a moment like this?

UConn vs Georgetown Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

Georgetown can’t guard the three.

The team has a bad mix of things happening with struggles from the field to go along with the defensive lapses. The team shoots a whole lot of threes, but not enough to make up for the other issues.

UConn hit ten of its 24 three point tries in the first meeting – a 96-73 win – and Georgetown hasn’t improved since then.

How bad are things for the Hoyas? They’ve lost 17 straight, the offense is struggling to get to 70 points, and …

Why Georgetown Will Win

Georgetown can rebound.

It might be having a whole slew of problems in a whole lot of areas, but again, it’s able to hit three from time to time – it came up with 12 against DePaul and 11 against Marquette – and even though the shooting hasn’t been great, the offensive rebounds are there.

To have any shot, the Hoyas have to start shooting from three and keep it all going. UConn isn’t great at stopping threes, it has problems from time to time on the boards, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Georgetown can rebound, but it didn’t do it against UConn the first time around and it’s not going to be great in this.

No, Georgetown can’t shoot, but it was great in that first game and it still got rocked. It won’t score enough to keep up once UConn gets into a second half groove.
