Giants continue to spiral with 21-6 loss to Cowboys

On free medium Pepsi Day, the New York Giants once again bombed out, falling to the Dallas Cowboys, 21-6.

Staying with the trend of the last few weeks, the New York Giants were unable to get much going on the offensive side of the ball in a Week 15 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Although the Giants’ defense played solidly enough against the high-powered Dallas offense, the Cowboys capitalized on the Giant’s turnovers with 15 points off the the four. That was essentially the difference in the game.

With the 21-6 loss, the Giants fall to 4-10 on the season.

Giants’ Gary Brightwell has sights set on becoming special teams coach

New York Giants rookie RB Gary Brightwell loves special teams and once he retires from the field, he’d like to become a ST coach.

New York Giants rookie Gary Brightwell feels right at home this week as the team prepares for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers at the University of Arizona, Brightwell’s alma mater.

The rookie running back has been used mainly on special teams this season rather than in the backfield ,but he’s being patient and is enjoying his role as a special teamer. It just happens to be Brightwell’s thing.

“I embraced the role even when I was in college, like even my senior year I was still embracing that role,” Brghtwell said this week.

“After my career, I want to become a special teams coach, so that should tell you how I feel about special teams.”

Brightwell is primarily used on kick coverage and the Giants haven’t been doing a lot of kicking off, nor have the been doing a lot of kicking in general. He’s only appeared on 54 percent of the special teams snaps.

As for getting involved more in the offense, Brightwell is waiting his turn.

“I’m not even worrying about that right now. I’m just focused on getting some more wins, keep doing my job and honestly, if I do that, things are going to come,” he said.

The Giants drafted Brightwell in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft, which was kind of a surprise. They were looking for running back depth and he wasn’t really rated as highly as some others due to his mild usage at Arizona. The Giants liked what he brings to the special teams.

After he was drafted, Brightwell was all about special teams telling reporters, “I feel like special teams starts the game and also finish it. Special teams has all the hidden yards. I mean, you need special teams to dominate.”

Giants activate Gary Brightwell from Reserve/COVID-19 list

The New York Giants have activated rookie running back Gary Brightwell from the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

The New York Giants announced on Monday that rookie running back Gary Brightwell has been activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Brightwell was among several dozen Giants who tested positive for COVID-19 last week. The vast majority of those were false-positives but Brightwell was one of two true positives, joining running backs coach Burton Burns.

Initial reports had suggested Brightwell was also a false-positive.

The 22-year-old Brightwell was selected in the sixth-round of the 2021 NFL draft. He has appeared in eight games this season, gaining four yards on one carry and hauling in one pass for an additional six yards.

Brightwell has spent most of his time on special teams, recording six tackles (one solo).

In addition to Brightwell, the Giants are also hopeful to see the return of running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) in Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

18 injured or absent Giants account for over $33 million in salary cap space

A look at 18 injured or absent members of the New York Giants and their respective cap hits totaling more than $33 million in space.

The New York Giants have under $3 million in available salary cap space, according to Spotrac. And part of the reason for that slim margin is due to an overwhelming number of injured or absent players.

Sixteen players currently reside on injured reserve and that does not take into account the number of players that have been waived with injury settlements. Additionally, the Giants have one player (running back Gary Brightwell) on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and one player (center Jonotthan Harrison) on the Practice Squad/Injured list.

Let’s not even talk about the players eating up a ton of dead cap space.

Below is a look at the 18 injured or absent Giants and how much cap space they account for.

Giants defeat Raiders, 23-16: Instant analysis

Analyzing the New York Giants’ 23-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium in Week 9.

The New York Giants hosted the AFC West-leading Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon, which was a perfect day for football with temperatures around 50 degrees and hardly any wind.

The Giants were coming off another disappointing loss while Las Vegas was coming off their bye week. It was hardly an uneventful week for the Raiders with the tragic Henry Ruggs situation, and the Giants were uncertain about who would be available this week after some faulty COVID-19 tests.

The line at kickoff had dipped down to Giants +2.5 with an over/under of 46.5 points as per the Tipico Sportsbook app.

The Giants opened the scoring with a crisp seven-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a Daniel Jones-to-Evan Engram 30-yard hookup for a touchdown that Engram grabbed over Raiders safety Jonathan Abram.

The Raiders stormed right back, marching 72 yards on 10 plays and tied the game when Derek Carr hit Hunter Renfrow for a two-yard score after Renfrow shook James Bradberry on the goal line.

The defenses took over the game and the clubs traded field goals to bring the score to 10-10 with 2:00 remaining in the first half. The Giants have been terrible at the end of the first half all season and they continued that in this game as Las Vegas was able to add another field goal with 0:10 remaining in the half to take a 13-10 lead into the tunnel.

The Raiders lead was short-lived as Giants safety Xavier McKinney picked off Carr on the first possession the second half and took it 41 yards to the house to give the Giants a 17-13 lead.

On the next possession, the Giants defense once again stood tall and forced a field goal. It was their third red zone stop of the game in four tries.

Graham Gano’s 32-yard field goal widened the Giants’ lead with 14:07 remaining. The defense did their thing again on the Raiders’ next drive, stopping them on third-and-6 from the Giants’ 10. Daniel Carlson then hooked the 25-yard field goal attempt wide left to keep the score at 20-16 in favor of New York.

McKinney’s second interception shut the door on Las Vegas’ next possession and sent the Giants on a drive that resulted in a 36-yard field goal to extend the Giants’ lead to 23-16.

The Raiders took control of the football on their own 25 with 3:21 remaining. After driving down to the Giants’ 13 with 0:50 remaining, the defense went work again. Rookie defensive end Quincy Roche stripped Carr of the ball and it was recovered by Leonard Williams on the 23.

The Giants finally win close one. They are 3-3 after starting the year 0-3.

Notes

  • The Giants were shorthanded in the backfield. Saquon Barkley (ankle) and rookie Gary Brightwell (COVID-19) were inactive. Barkley has played in just 20 of the Giants’ last 41 games.
  • Devontae Booker had a career high 99 yards rushing on 21 carries and added 23 yards on three receptions.
  • Sterling Shepard (quad) missed his fourth game of the season. Shepard has now missed 14 games since the beginning of the 2019 season due to various injuries.
  • Fourth-round pick Elerson Smith, an outside linebacker out of Northern Iowa, made his NFL debut. Oshane Ximines was a healthy scratch, perhaps benched after his offsides penalty cost the Giants a chance to win last Monday night in Kansas City.
  • KR/WR Pharoh Cooper and safety J.R. Reed also made their Giants debut in this game.
  • Keion Crossen’s personal foul penalty on Raiders punter A.J. Cole was the 12th special team penalty of the season for the Giants, the most of any team in the NFL this year.
  • The game was broadcast on CBS as the Giants were hosting an AFC team. Kevin Harlan, Trent Green and Melanie Collins (field reporter) called the game.

Report: Giants will be without Gary Brightwell in Week 9

The New York Giants will be without running back Gary Brightwell (Reserve/COVID-19) on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The New York Giants will be unable to welcome Saquon Barkley (ankle) back this Sunday after a false-positive for COVID-19 stunted his rehab. They will also be without rookie Gary Brightwell, who won’t come off the reserve list in time for the Week 9 game.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic was the first to report the news.

Like Barkley, it is believed that Brightwell tested false-positive before landing on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He would be required to test negative consecutively and show no symptoms of the virus before being removed.

The Giants experienced in excess of 20 false-positives this week, forcing them to temporarily halt rapid testing and return to PCR testing. It is believed that an issue with the lab is at fault for the incorrect testing results.

In addition to Brightwell, the Giants will also be without running backs coach Burton Burns. He was a true positive for COVID-19 and has been isolated from the team.

Freddie Kitchens and Jody Wright will coach the running backs in place of Burns.

Due to their depth issues at the position, the Giants are expected to elevate Dexter Williams, who was signed earlier this week, or Sandro Platzgummer from their practice squad.

Currently, Devontae Booker and fullback Eli Penny are the only healthy bodies at the position.

Giants’ Saquon Barkley out, Kenny Golladay questionable vs. Raiders

The New York Giants will be without RB Saquon Barkley and WR Sterling Shepard against the Raiders, but may get WR Kenny Golladay back.

The New York Giants had up to 20 false-positives for COVID-19 this week including running back Saquon Barkley. Because of that, and in addition to his sprained ankle, Barkley missed two days of practice.

As a result, Barkley will not return until at least Monday, November 22 when the Giants take on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has been ruled out for Week 9.

In addition to Barkley, wide Sterling Shepard and several others have also been ruled out.

On the positive end of things, wide receiver Kenny Golladay returned to practice this week, and he was joined by fellow receiver John Ross. They have both been listed as questionable.

The Giants’ final injury report can be found below:

Out: RB Saquon Barkley (ankle/COVID protocol), LB Lorenzo Carter (ankle), DB Nate Ebner (ankle), WR Sterling Shepard (quad)

Doubtful: N/A

Questionable: WR Kenny Golladay (knee), WR John Ross (quad), RB Gary Brightwell (COVID protocol)

Meanwhile, for the Raiders, their final injury report was impressively thin:

Out: N/A

Doubtful: N/A

Questionable: N/A
