Studs and duds from Colts’ preseason win over Bears

Here are the studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason win over the Bears.

The Indianapolis Colts grabbed their first win of the preseason Saturday night in a 24-17 victory over the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Though the starters didn’t see the field after conducting some physical joint training camp practices at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield earlier in the week, we still got to see some football take place in the Circle City.

Here’s a look at the studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason win Saturday night:

5 takeaways from Colts’ 24-17 preseason win over the Bears

Here are five takeaways from the Colts’ preseason win over the Bears.

The Indianapolis Colts won their lone home preseason game against the Chicago Bears after being down two scores in the fourth quarter.

It ended up being the battle of the backups after it came out right before kickoff that Shane Steichen elected to withhold his starters after this week’s joint practices with the Bears.

This created a great opportunity for players to make their case for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Colts vs. Bears: 6 things to know in preseason Week 2

Here are six things to know entering the preseason Week 2 matchup.

The Indianapolis Colts host Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19, for their second preseason game.

After hosting two joint practices with the Bears this week, the team will continue the battle on familiar turf against the squad led by Matt Eberflus.

Here are the six things to know for Week 2 of the preseason:

Colts name Anthony Richardson starting QB for Week 1 vs. Jaguars

The Jaguars will face the Anthony Richardson-led Colts in Week 1 of the regular season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will begin their 2023 season with a matchup against the Anthony Richardson-led Indianapolis Colts.

Colts first-year head coach Shane Steichen made the announcement Tuesday, which came as a surprise to Richardson himself.

“Honestly, I was shocked,” Richardson said, via WISH-TV. “I’ve been grinding, putting in the work to try to get the title, but it’s not really all about the title. I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for the team, despite being labeled as QB1 I’ve still got other guys in that room helping me to get to that standard. I’m forever thankful for them.”

Indianapolis selected Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

The alternative for the Colts in Week 1 was former Jaguars starter Gardner Minshew, who finished his first preseason game with the team with six completions on six attempts for 72 yards. Richardson finished the game seven-of-12 passing for 67 yards with an interception.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has been a strong advocate for Richardson taking the reins sooner rather than later, telling Pat McAfee in July that the rookie will only develop if he’s on the field.

“He has to play to get better,” Irsay said. “I mean, there’s no question. Gardner [Minshew] could come out and play better early on, him just being a veteran, but we have to get Anthony on the field.”

Jacksonville is listed as a 3.5-point road favorite in Week 1 via BetMGM.

Studs and duds from Colts’ preseason loss to Bills

Studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason opener against the Bills.

The Indianapolis Colts opened their preseason with a 23-19 loss against the Buffalo Bills on the road at Highmark Stadium on Saturday.

Marking the first time we’ve seen the Colts play under a new regime led by rookie head coach Shane Steichen. There were plenty of highs and lows from the preseason opener.

This will focus solely on those who performed well and those who failed to make a strong impression Saturday. Most of these players will have a chance to build off their performances, either good or bad, over the next two weeks.

Here are the studs and duds from preseason Week 1 opener against the Bills.

5 takeaways from Colts’ 23-19 preseason loss to Bills

Here are five takeaways from the Colts’ preseason loss to the Bills.

The Indianapolis Colts have officially kicked off their preseason.

It wasn’t a pretty day in Orchard Park for Indy, falling 23-19 in the opener, but there were some positive moments that Shane Steichen can pull from their exhibition against the Buffalo Bills.

Here are my five takeaways from the matchup:

Colts’ player of the game vs. Bills: QB Gardner Minshew

Here’s why QB Gardner Minshew is our player of the game from the Colts’ preseason loss to the Bills.

In the team’s first action of the season and the first game in the Shane Steichen era, the Indianapolis Colts lost to the Buffalo Bills, 23-19.

The first team unit played as expected with rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. The crew did have some nice plays that moved the ball well but had some kinks to iron out with timing and communication. The first team was also missing several key players today due to injury.

However, one player stood out on the second-team offense: quarterback Gardener Minshew.

After some initial sacks, Minshew settled in and moved the team down the field and into scoring range during a two-minute drill. Running back Jake Funk did the rest with an easy walk-in touchdown.

Minshew was surgical, connecting on all six of his passes for 72 yards and a 116.7 rating. He showed that he was a solid backup and that they could trust him to get the job done if the team were in a bind.

Also, he will be critical to Antony Richardson’s development as the season progresses.

The Indianapolis Colts finally got on the board for the first time this preseason near the end of the first half of Saturday’s opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Though rookie Anthony Richardson led a drive that should have ended in a field goal during the first quarter, kicker Matt Gay missed a 28-yard attempt.

On the fifth and final drive of the first half, quarterback Gardner Minshew led the second-team offense down the field on a 12-play, 82-yard drive that ended with a goal-line score from running back Jake Funk.
