NFL summarizes gambling policy with ‘six main rules’ for players

The NFL has “six main rules” to help players stay within the league’s gambling policy.

After the NFL handed down an indefinite suspension to Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike last summer, coach Sean Payton blasted the (lack of) clarity in the league’s gambling policy.

“[T]hat eight-page handout we received [from the NFL] was more confusing after I read it than it was before I looked at it,” Payton said in 2023.

Perhaps the NFL’s new language will be an improvement. Last week, the league announced their summary of “six main rules” for players ahead of the 2024 season. Here they are:

  • NEVER bet on the NFL: Includes other NFL events such as Draft, Combine, Pro Bowl, & NFL Honors
  • Don’t have someone bet for you: Do not ask family, friends, or others to place a bet for you
  • Don’t gamble (no bets on sports, casino or card gamesat your team facility/stadium, while traveling for a road game, or staying at a team hotel.
  • Don’t share team ‘inside information’: Don’t share information that hasn’t been announced by team.
  • Don’t enter a sportsbook during the NFL playing season.
  • Don’t play daily fantasy football.

There’s an even stricter policy for non-players in the NFL: “Additional Rule Applicable ONLY to Coaches, Staff, and Personnel – Do NOT Bet on Any Sports!

The league also announced that in-person gambling policy education and training will be mandatory for all players in 2024.

Uwazurike was suspended last year after he gambled on NFL games, including Broncos games. His suspension was lifted earlier this month. With the league’s gambling policy now clarified, players shouldn’t have any excuses going forward.

Broncos expect DL Eyioma Uwazurike to be reinstated by NFL

After serving a year-plus suspension, Broncos DE Eyioma Uwazurike could be reinstated “very soon.”

After being suspended for more than a year, Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike might be on the verge of returning to the team.

“I think there’s good news on his front,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said Thursday. “Everything in [Iowa] was dropped and the other day everything in Colorado [was dropped]. He had his conference call with the league office, and we fully anticipate him now joining us as soon as possible.

“We’re waiting on the league. He’s in great shape, and we were really excited to hear that news. We anticipate — we see that happening very soon. That’ll be an additional player for us, and we’ll be glad to have him back. So good news on that front.”

Uwazurike was suspended indefinitely on July 24, 2023 after gambling on NFL games, including Broncos games. Payton has indicated the team will welcome him back when Uwazurike is permitted to return.

“I know he’s champing at the bit to get back, and it sounds like it’s going to happen very soon,” Payton said.

Jayden Daniels’ $10K bet with Malik Nabers is off

The bet is no more.

Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers, former LSU teammates, made a friendly wager ahead of the 2024 NFL draft: The good friends made a $10,000 bet on who would win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

That bet is no more.

“I’m educated now that I got here about sports betting and gambling,” Nabers said on the first day of Giants rookie minicamp via Jordan Raanan of ESPN. “So we’re calling the bet off. There is no bet now. It was just another brother pushing another brother to try to get to success. That is all it was.”

The friendly wager became known when Nabers, as a guest on “The Pivot” podcast, announced he and Daniels made the bet. Daniels later confirmed it was true.

However, before both players reported to rookie minicamp, the NFL was expected to educate the rookies on the league’s gambling policy.

Daniels acknowledged the bet was off when he spoke to reporters after the first day of Washington Commanders rookie minicamp.

“Yeah, we were uneducated on the gambling policy in the NFL,” Daniels said. “We learned about it last night. Me and him had a conversation and canceled the bet. Obviously, we don’t want to get in trouble with anything, so we’re just focused on being the best players for our respective teams.”

The NFL seemed to take this a bit too seriously, especially considering its partnerships with companies like DraftKings and FanDuel. Daniels and Nabers weren’t placing bets on teams or with sportsbooks. This was, as Nabers described, two friends pushing one another and having some fun with it.

Still, it’s probably a good thing to learn now and put it behind them.

Nabers probably wishes he’d never mentioned it.

Celtics Lab 247: Stretch run, blurred lines; new media and gambling in the NBA with Sopan Deb

How are new media and gambling changing the NBA? We spoke with the New York Time’s Sopan Deb about the Celtics and the blurring lines of the league.

Fans of the Boston Celtics (and, truthfully, the entire league) can’t watch their favorite team without a gambling segment, an ad about betting, or an opportunity to gamble. And when the game ends, more and more of the players playing it are jumping on their podcasts to talk about it.

With the lines between multiple, entangled businesses that make up the NBA ecosphere blurring more with every passing day, what are the benefits — and more importantly, the risks — of these phenomenons? Is the ubiquity of sports gambling here to stay? Can we expect the same objectivity from NBA players acting as new media as we can from the old? And what potential concerns might be coming down the pike that we have yet to even think of?

To talk about the blurred lines of today’s NBA landscape (and a bit about the Celtics), the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Sopan Deb of the New York Times.

We get into everything from LeBron James’ new podcast with JJ Redick to how these blurred lines both fuel and threaten the NBA’s bright future. So, tune in for a headier look at the league while we slog through the rest of the stretch run.

Prosecutors drop charges against Broncos DL Eyioma Uwazurike

Prosecutors have dropped criminal charges against Eyioma Uwazurike, but the Broncos’ defensive lineman remains suspended by the NFL.

The NFL handed down an indefinite suspension to Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike last year for breaking the league’s gambling policy.

In addition to the NFL’s suspension, Uwazurike also faced potential legal repercussions. On Friday, the criminal charges were dropped due to the investigation “exceeding [the] scope of permitted use of tracking software,” according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson.

The criminal charges have been dropped, but Uwazurike remains suspended and away from the team. Broncos coach Sean Payton criticized the NFL’s stipulations for suspended players last summer.

“[W]e’re going to send them home for a year, where they can’t be around,” Payton said in an interview with USA TODAY‘s Jarrett Bell last July. “The idea that you just go away — shame on us.”

Uwazurike will be eligible to petition for reinstatement on July 24. There’s no guarantee the NFL will grant a reinstatement, but the criminal charges being dropped could, in theory, make Uwazurike more likely to return in 2024.

FanDuel sports releases 2024 College Football SEC win totals

How many games does FanDuel project the Crimson Tide to win in 2024?

There is no question that the retirement of [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] will have a massive impact on the landscape of not only the Southeastern Conference but college football as a whole. However, even though the GOAT might be gone, Alabama is still one of the best programs in all of college football and just picked up one of the best young coaches in the game in [autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag]. DeBoer is coming off of a national title appearance with the Washington Huskies in just his second year and posted a 25-3 record with UW in 2022 and 2023. With the playoffs expanding to 12 teams too, it’s hard to see Alabama missing out on it despite all of the changes going on inside of Tuscaloosa.

The SEC has always been a gauntlet, but the additions of Texas and Oklahoma in 2024 are going to make things even crazier. The Tide will not face Texas next season, but they do have a trip to Norman, Oklahoma to face the Sooners the week before the Iron Bowl.

FanDuel released their betting win totals for all of the SEC teams in 2024, and let’s just say they are very interesting. FanDuel sets Alabama’s win total at 9.5 games, which my instant reaction is over. Georgia and Texas lead the way with 10.5 whereas Auburn is about middle of the pack at 7.5.
