Packers open Week 1 as the slightest of underdogs vs. Bears

The Packers opened Week 1 as a 1.0-point road underdog to the Bears.

On the road in the first game of the Jordan Love era, the Green Bay Packers are now the slightest of betting underdogs to the Chicago Bears in Week 1 of the 2023 season, which opens Sunday for both teams at Soldier Field.

Per Bet365, the betting line as of Tuesday is Packers +1.0 (or 1-point underdogs), with an over/under of 43.0 points.

Dating back to May, the Packers have been as much as 2.5-point underdogs for Week 1 at various sportsbooks. Now, betting lines see this rivalry game as a toss up.

The Bears are coming off a season in which they finished with the worst record in the NFL, while the Packers missed the playoffs and are now transitioning at quarterback to Love, a first-year starter wtih 83 career regular season passes.

Can the Bears turn the tide in the rivalry, or will the Packers reassert their dominance with a new quarterback?

The Matt LaFleur-Aaron Rodgers era was a kind one to the Packers, both straight up and against the spread. The Packers were 8-0 against the Bears both in terms of wins-losses and against the spread over the last four seasons. LaFleur was hired in 2019 and has never lost to the Bears.

Another factor to consider: the Packers have lost 38-3 and 23-7 in Week 1 over the last two seasons. Both blowout losses came on the road. LaFleur played more players during the preseason in an attempt to ward off a poor season-opening performance and give his young football team more live-game reps.

Week 1 for the Packers and Bears kicks off Sunday at 3:25 p.m. CT.

The trip to Knoxville this weekend will be No. 3 Alabama’s toughest test by far as Tennessee is ranked No. 6 in the country after a demolition against LSU in Baton Rouge in Week 6. Fortunately, the Tide enter the matchup on a 15-game winning streak against the Volunteers.

Previously earlier this week we reported the spread to be 17.5 and the total to be 58.5, but we have some interesting changes the day of the game. It is no secret that most bets come in during the weekend of the game as more casual fans and squares place their bets, but the spread has no moved through the key number of 17!

Ohio State is now favored by 16.5, which typically means enough money has poured in on the Notre Dame squad to force this change and this is a pretty decent swing in one day considering that it isn’t just one point, but it moves through the key number of 17, which is a much more common point differential.

The total also moved up one point from 58.5 to 59.5, which indicates that money is coming in on the over, but this swing is much less drastic as 59 is a less impactful key number.

This will be interesting to monitor all the way up to game time.

‘I still got it:’ DeMarcus Lawrence’s pick-six wows Cowboys teammates

Lawrence’s second career interception added to the team’s locker room bet, but also calls into question the veteran’s Madden ratings. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys defense came in to their Week 16 game leading the offense by two in their much-ballyhooed turnovers-to-touchdowns intrasquad bet. Trevon Diggs’s interception on Washington’s first play from scrimmage extended the lead to three.

But when two first-quarter scoring passes from quarterback Dak Prescott brought things a little too close for comfort, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence took matters- and a Taylor Heinicke throw- into his own hands for one of the plays of the night in a 56-14 Dallas romp.

“In all honesty, the quarterback just threw the ball right in my direction,” Lawrence told reporters following his fourth game back after a two-and-a-half-month absence with a broken foot. “I was lucky enough to get my hands on the ball and make it into the end zone. I don’t know how I made it into the end zone; I just made it.”

The interception itself was impressive, to be sure. The 40-yard return for a touchdown, though, is what had the Cowboys locker room talking.

“D-Law’s been extraordinary since his return,” rookie linebacker Micah Parsons said. “He just creates a lot of opportunities for everyone, he’s so effective in the pass game and the run game. He’s just a force when he’s out there. I told him, ‘You’ve got a little bit more juice than I thought you had left.'”

“He’s fire,” cornerback and league interception leader Trevon Diggs raved. “Like, he’s really fast. Madden needs to stop changing his ratings, too. I think they’ve got him at, like, an 80-something. He’s definitely a 90 speed on Madden. Need to fix that.”

The eight-year veteran agreed once it was brought to his attention.

“Yeah, you know, Madden has been slacking the last couple years on my speed and stuff,” Lawrence said. “I feel like they got the picture tonight.”

“I’ve got to show the young boys that I still got it,” the 29-year-old said with a smile.

Lawrence’s second career pick- and his first touchdown- made an impression on his offensive counterparts, too.

“Nothing was more impressive than D-Law’s pick-six today,” running back Ezekiel Elliott gushed. “I was impressed with the stiff-arm, the high knees, making the last guy miss on the sideline… he looked like he’s been playing offense his whole life. I think he said was an all-state tight end on the sideline, so you saw that today.”

But Prescott was quick to point out that Lawrence’s brilliant play still only counts as one turnover in the bet.

“That doesn’t double up the points, by any means,” Prescott joked in his postgame press conference. “It was impressive. If anything, I thought that maybe we need to get him in over there at the jumbo-Y position and maybe get him a pass.”

“Well, I’ll say what was echoed on the sideline: we probably need to find a wrinkle or two for him,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy concurred. “Just a great play by DeMarcus. If you look, he had the double-[team] on the rush, and the way he came off and played the quarterback’s eyes, just a phenomenal play.”

And just the latest phenomenal play in what has been a remarkable season for the Cowboys defense, its first under coordinator Dan Quinn. The unit now leads the league with 33 takeaways, 10 more than they logged in all of 2020, and still with two games to go.

As for the bet, Lawrence’s pick didn’t provide quite enough pad for the defense on a night when Prescott and the offense got its groove back to the tune of six trips to the end zone. They take a plus-two lead into Week 17, even if Lawrence thinks his pick-six should carry bonus points.

“Offense be cheating, bro. They only gave us the turnover, not the touchdown,” he told reporters. “They won the battle today, but we’re coming back strong next week.”

Despite earning the praise of his teammates for providing the athletic highlight of the night, Lawrence almost certainly won’t be lining up as a receiver for a trick play in the red zone anytime soon.

No way is he adding to the offense’s touchdown totals. He’s got a bet- and maybe much more- to win with the Cowboys’ reinvented defense.

Trevor Lawrence dons UGA gear after losing a bet with teammate

Lawrence lost a bet with teammate Terry Godwin, and he had to wear Georgia gear to the Jags’ locker room on Monday.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was on-hand for his alma mater’s 10-3 loss to Georgia in the season-opener in Charlotte on Saturday night. It was bad enough that Lawrence had to watch a game in which Clemson couldn’t find the end zone, but what came after the game was arguably even worse for him.

He apparently lost a bet with Jaguars teammate Terry Godwin, who played for Georgia in college, and had to show up to the Jags facility on Monday morning decked out in Bulldogs gear.

Godwin, who was placed on the injured reserve in June, uploaded a video of the event to his Instagram story.

Clemson probably wished it had Lawrence on the sidelines in that one, as his replacement, D.J. Uiagalelei, struggled against the ferocious Georgia front, completing just 19 of his 37 passes for 178 yards and a pick. He was sacked seven times as the Tigers’ offensive line had no answer for the UGA pass rush.

After watching that disappointing offensive performance, having to wear the opponent’s colors just adds insult to injury for Lawrence.

Texans QB Deshaun Watson wins BET Faith in Action award, thanks former Buccaneers RB Warrick Dunn

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson was named as BET’s Faith in Action Award winner.

Who says Deshaun Watson can’t win in February?

The Houston Texans three-time Pro Bowl quarterback has demonstrated his victorious nature, not just on the football field, but in the game of life. For these reasons, he collected the BET Faith in Action award Saturday night.

The presentation of the award was made by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn, who famously gave Watson and his mother a home on behalf of Habitat for Humanity back in the mid-2000s when Dunn was with the Falcons.

“First, I want to say thank you to Warrick Dunn for your kind words,” said Watson. “Thank you for blessing me and my family when I was a little boy and inspiring me to fulfill my dreams and do the things that I want to do. And just really being a blessing around the country. So, thank you, man.”

Watson wasn’t finished with his thank yous, and he also declared what it mean to him and his family to be named the honoree.

Said Watson: “I want to say thank you to Super Bowl Gospel. Thank you to BET. Thank you to the NFL for this awesome award. This is one of my favorite awards that I’ve been able to receive in my lifetime. My mom, she definitely enjoyed it because this is what we live about. This is what she raised all of her kids on is having that faith in action and standing tall for what we believe in and helping people around in the community.

“So, I just want to say thank you everyone. This is definitely one that we’re going to celebrate and really enjoy and put this one the stand in the front. This is what we live about. So, thank you everyone and God bless.”

Watson won the NFL passing title in 2020 with 4,823 yards, setting the new Texans single-season mark in the process. The former 2017 first-round pick from Clemson also set the new Texans single-season passing touchdown mark with 33 scoring throws.

Big sports bettor wagers $55,000 on Chase Young to win Defensive Rookie of the Year

There are high expectations for Chase Young in his rookie season, and one bettor is putting their money where their mouth is with confidence.

With the NFL season just a couple of weeks away, many sports bettors are starting to place their wagers across the country with a number of futures bets in their sights.

One of the bigger bets that was placed recent came from New Jersey, where someone put down a whopping $55,000 on Washington’s Chase Young to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award at +220 odds. If you plug that into a betting calculator, a win on that bet would pay out $176,000 before taxes.

While the dollar amount may be a bit shocking, it’s not a surprise to see the confidence in Young’s ability to have a stellar rookie season start to grow. After a legendary college career, Young has been a stand-out already in practice, and he seems to be transitioning well to the NFL.

We don’t know who this big-bettor is, but I think I can speak for everyone in Washington when I wish them the best of luck in their wagering on this one.

Redskins open 2020 season as home underdogs to Eagles in Week 1

The Redskins have a chance to make a statement in the first game of the year as they face off against the Eagles at home.

For the second year in a row, the Washington Redskins will open up their 2020 regular season with a game against the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. Last year, Washington had a great chance to steal a win in the first week of the season, going up 17-0 before it all came crashing down.

So with the same matchup on tap to kick off the 2020 season, only this time at Fed Ex Field, what can we expect? Early oddsmakers have already set a betting line for the game, listing the Redskins as a home-dog, giving them 4.5 points.

It’s no surprise that the Redskins aren’t favored to win, as they’ve been getting slighted by handicappers a bunch as of late. In a release of prop bets that came out earlier this offseason, Washington was near the bottom of the barrel in nearly every bet, including Super Bowl contenders, playoff teams, and division winners.

Until they can prove Vegas otherwise, they will likely continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to betting lines, but if you put some money down on them to win, it could turn into a nice payday.

Despite strong draft, Jags remain favorites to finish last in AFC South

Though the Jags had a strong draft, the good folks at BetMGM still aren’t believers in them.

It’s been more than a week since the 2020 NFL Draft ended, and while the Jacksonville Jaguars have had a well-received draft, the odds-makers still don’t believe in them.

As it stands currently, the Jaguars are a -385 favorite to finish dead last in the AFC South according to BetMGM. A prospective bettor that decides to take the pick would need to put down $385 to win $100. This comes after the Jaguars finished in last place in the division in 2019.

On another note, for the highly ambitious Jags fan, the team is also +1400 to win the division meaning that if someone puts down $100 they would win $1,400 if the Jaguars finish in first place. The Jags haven’t claimed the top spot in the AFC South since 2017 where they lost in the AFC Championship game to the New England Patriots.

The odds are truly stacked against the Jags in 2020. Hopefully, this will give them more fuel to finish with a respectable season and hush most of the detractors.
