Colts sign 9 to futures contracts among several roster moves

The Colts made 14 roster moves Monday to begin the 2024 offseason.

The Indianapolis Colts officially got their offseason underway Monday by making several roster moves, including the signings of nine players to Reserve/Future contracts, the team announced.

Along with the nine futures contracts the team signed, all of which include players from the practice squad, the Colts also signed four players to one-year contract extensions while waiving another player. So in total, the Colts made 14 moves.

As is typical protocol following the end of the regular season, the Colts will be preparing to expand their roster to 90 players for the offseason. Much of that includes signing players to futures contracts.

The expansion of the roster to 90 players doesn’t go into effect until the start of the new league year, which is March 13. That’s why it’s technically a reserve contract. It is essentially stating the player will be on the 90-man roster when the time comes.

There is no limit to how many futures contracts the Colts have as long as they are within the 90-man limit when the new league year rolls around.

Here’s a look at the 14 moves the Colts made to begin the offseason:

10 players sign future contracts with Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings signed 10 player from the practice squad to futures contracts, keeping them with the franchise during the offseason.

The Minnesota Vikings began shaping their 2024 roster on Monday afternoon by signing 10 players to futures contracts.

A futures contract is one that a player signs when they aren’t signed to a team’s active roster when the season is over. It is for the league minimum depending on how many service years the player has. The players don’t impact the salary cap until the new league year starts on March 13th.

Each year, teams usually sign in the ballpark of 10 players to futures contracts. They are usually players that have been on their practice squads throughout the year but every so often, teams will sign a player from another practice squad.

The Vikings signed 10 players to futures contracts on Monday afternoon with all of them having been on the practice squad.

Colts sign 3 more to futures contracts

Colts add 3 more futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackles Jake Benzinger and Elijah Nkansah and cornerback Anthony Chesley to reserve/future contracts, the team announced Tuesday.

The Colts will continue to fill their roster until they reach the 90-man limit for the offseason. Most of these players are camp bodies who will be getting a shot to prove their worth to NFL coaches, but its more about the Colts trying to see if they can find a diamond in the rough.

The Colts have already signed several players to futures contracts but they remain on the reserve list until the day after the Super Bowl in February. Then, they will be added to the active roster.

Colts sign two more to futures contracts

Colts add two more futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Gary Jennings and running back Benny LeMay to reserve/futures contracts, the team announced Wednesday.

The Colts got their futures signings underway earlier this week with the addition of two other players. The futures contracts won’t count against the active roster until the day after the Super Bowl so the Colts can sign as many players to futures contracts as they like.

Once the offseason officially begins after the Super Bowl, though, the rosters will expand to the 90-man limit.

Jennings was a fourth-round pick with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. He has also spent time with the Miami Dolphins (2019), Baltimore Ravens (2020) and Buffalo Bills (2020).

LeMay signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted rookie in 2020 and mostly spent time on the practice squad during his rookie season.

Colts sign two players to futures contracts

Colts begin adding futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Nick Nelson and tight end Jordan Thomas to reserve/futures contracts, the team announced Tuesday.

As the offseason begins for most teams, the rosters will expand to 90 players on Feb. 8, the day after the Super Bowl. This means teams can begin filling out their futures contracts for their 90-man roster and they won’t count toward the active roster until then.

Nelson worked out for the Colts last week. He’s a Wisconsin product who was initially selected by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft. He’s appeared in 12 games and has one pass defended.

Thomas was a sixth-round pick with the Houston Texans in the 2018 NFL draft. He has appeared in 27 games recording 22 receptions for 226 yards and five touchdowns.

Colts sign OT Brandon Hitner to futures contract

Colts add another futures contract.

The Indianapolis Colts signed offensive tackle Brandon Hitner to a reserve/futures contract, the team announced Tuesday.

From the release by the team:

Hitner, 6-6, 300 pounds, was originally signed by the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2019. He was waived by the Rams prior to the start of the regular season. Hitner then spent time on the practice squads of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. He competed in 28 games during his collegiate career at Villanova and was the recipient of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award in 2017.

Hitner joins the list of now 15 players to sign futures contracts with the Colts. The other 14 all signed at one time.

The Colts can sign as many players to futures contracts as they want until the 90-man roster has hit its limit.
