Report: Steelers adding former Colts LB Forrest Rhyne

The Steelers might be adding more depth at inside linebacker.

According to a report by MLFootball, the Pittsburgh Steelers are adding depth at inside linebacker. They have reported the Steelers are signing former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Forrest Rhyne.

Rhyne was signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2022 out of Villanova. Rhyne was a star at Villanova and a tackling machine. He spent much of his rookie season on the practice squad.

Rhyne made his NFL debut last season against the Steelers in Week 12. He was active for three straight games but only played on special teams.

If this move happens, we will have to see what the corresponding move might be. starting inside linebacker Elandon Roberts only played three snaps in Friday’s first preseason game before exiting so could he be injured? Head coach Mike Tomlin didn’t address any injury after the game but this wouldn’t be the first time a player was hurt and Tomlin chose not to share that information with the media.

Colts waive five more players following 2023 draft

The Colts waive five more players.

The Indianapolis Colts waived five more players following the 2023 NFL draft, the team announced Thursday.

After opening the week by waiving four players, the Colts continue to make room for their massive 12-man draft class. They also have a pretty big undrafted rookie free agent class coming in.

Here are the five players who were waived Thursday:

Colts sign 12 players to futures contracts

The Colts signed 12 players to futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed 12 players to Reserve/Futures contracts, the team announced Monday.

As is typical protocol following the end of the regular season, the Colts will be preparing to expand their roster to 90 players for the offseason. Much of that includes signing players to futures contracts.

The expansion of the roster to 90 players doesn’t go into effect until the start of the new league year, which is March 15. That’s why it’s technically a reserve contract. This is essentially stating the player will be on the 90-man roster when the time comes.

There is no limit to how many futures contracts the Colts have as long as they are within the 90-man limit when the new league year rolls around.

Here’s a look at the 12 players signed to futures contracts to begin the offseason:

Colts elevate two players from practice squad for Week 15

The Colts elevated two players from the practice squad for Week 15.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. and linebacker Forrest Rhyne from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the Week 15 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced Friday.

With cornerbacks Kenny Moore II (ankle) and Brandon Facyson (illness) being ruled out—Facyson was downgraded Friday—the Colts are extremely short-handed in the secondary. Baker will likely add back-end and special teams depth.

Rhyne will be called up as a standard elevation for the third consecutive game. His role is mainly on special teams and since this is his third elevation, he must be signed to the active roster following the game if the Colts want him to be active for any remaining games.

Colts elevate LB Forrest Rhyne from practice squad

Colts elevated LB Forrest Rhyne from the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated linebacker Forrest Rhyne from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday ahead of the Week 13 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Adding some special teams depth, Rhyne likely won’t see much work on the defensive side of the ball. He was elevated in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and played 38% of the snaps on special teams.

This is Rhyne’s second standard elevation from the practice squad, which means he can be elevated one more time before the Colts would have to sign him to the active roster if they want him up for game days.

Colts elevate two players from practice squad for Week 12

The Colts elevated two players from the practice squad for Monday night’s matchup.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated tight end Nikola Kalinic and linebacker Forrest Rhyne from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the Week 12 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Monday.

Kalinic is likely being called up due to the injury status of Kylen Granson, who was questionable—then downgraded to doubtful—for the matchup due to an illness. He didn’t practice all week. Kalinic will join Mo Alie-Cox and rookie Jelani Woods, who makes his return from a shoulder injury.

Rhyne will be called up from the practice squad to add some depth on special teams with Zaire Franklin also battling an illness. Franklin initially didn’t have a designation but was then downgraded to questionable on Sunday. It still isn’t clear if he’ll be able to play.

If Franklin can’t play, it’s likely that E.J. Speed will take his spot while Rhyne contributes on special teams.

Colts make practice squad moves

The Colts made some moves to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed linebacker Forrest Rhyne and punter Nolan Cooney to the practice squad and released wide receiver DeMichael Harris and cornerback Ryan Smith from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Rhyne signed with the Colts during the offseason as an undrafted free agent, and Harris has been on and off the practice squad for the last three years.

Cooney hasn’t played an NFL game yet and was an undrafted free agent in 2021. This is somewhat significant considering the poor performance from Matt Haack in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans.

Colts to sign LB Forrest Rhyne to the practice squad

Forrest Rhyne is expected to return to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign linebacker Forrest Rhyne to the practice squad, according to Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star.

Until these signings are officially announced by the team, they should be taken with a grain of salt. You can follow along with our tracker, keeping up with every signing.

Rhyne joined the Colts this offseason as an undrafted rookie free agent from Villanova. Though the linebacker room is deep with talent, Rhyne made the most of his opportunities when he got them. He made some impressive plays on special teams as well.

The Colts traded for Grant Stuard on Tuesday so it’s unlikely Rhyne sees a ton of time on the active roster to begin his career.

Report: Colts waive OT Ryan Van Demark, LB Forrest Rhyne

Colts are waiving UDFA OT Ryan Van Demark and LB Forrest Rhyne.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to waive offensive tackle Ryan Van Demark and linebacker Forrest Rhyne ahead of Tuesday’s deadline to reduce the roster to 53 players.

Van Demark was one of the top undrafted rookies to sign with the Colts following the 2022 NFL draft. The Colts gave him a massive signing bonus to the tune of $175,000—the highest of the team’s undrafted rookie crop. However, Van Demark struggled in the preseason to the point where he’s likely a practice squad candidate.

Rhyne was battling for one of the final spots in the linebacker room and while he flashed some impressive traits, it’s likely he will wind up on the practice squad.

Be sure to keep up with all of the latest roster cuts via our tracker.

Stock report from Colts’ preseason loss to Lions

Here is the stock report from the Colts’ preseason loss to the Lions.

The Indianapolis Colts got through their second preseason game with a 27-26 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Without the majority of starters on the field, the Colts got a good look at the deeper parts of the depth chart. On both sides of the ball, we saw some players raise their stock with one preseason game left. We also saw some players lower their stock going into the preseason finale.

The stock reports are always fluid. It changes from player to player. A factor that might damage the stock of one player may not have the same impact on another. Most of it is circumstantial, and things can change on a dime in the NFL.

But with the second preseason game now behind us, here is a look at the stock report from Saturday’s loss:
