The GOAT of every NFL franchise

We give our pick for the greatest player in the history of each NFL team.

When it comes to the NFL, the debate over the greatest of all time or the greatest at any given position can get heated. But what about the debate for the greatest player of each individual franchise? We decided to take a stab at just that. So with that, here are our picks for the GOAT of every NFL franchise.

Alvin Kamara is the first player in Saints history to gain 10,000 all-purpose yards

Add this to Alvin Kamara’s resume. He is the first player in Saints history to gain 10,000 all-purpose yards:

Now that’s impressive. Everyone knows Alvin Kamara is one of the most-accomplished players to ever wear a New Orleans Saints uniform — his numerous records for touchdowns scored and plays made are proof of it. But the star running back surpassed an important milestone in Sunday’s win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Kamara is the first player in franchise history to gain more than 10,000 all-purpose yards. He went into Week 8 with 9,990 career all-purpose yards between his efforts on offense and special teams, which had already surpassed the great Marques Colston (9,766) as well as fan-favorites like Deuce McAllister (8,932) and Eric Martin (8,730) in the franchise record books. But Kamara’s entering a new tier now and leaving his mark on the league. After putting 110 all-purpose yards on the Colts, Kamara’s career total is up to 10,100 on the dot.

That ranks 13th among active players around the NFL and 116th all-time; Kamara’s rise bumps his predecessor Reggie Bush (who was tied with Terry Metcalf at 10,001 career all-purpose yards) down behind him. And he can keep climbing higher. Kamara has a lot of football left in him as we saw on Sunday. Who can say just where he’ll end up?

Good Morning Football predicts Panthers as a surprise team to make 2023 NFL Playoffs

Can rookie QB Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers sneak into the playoffs in 2023?

Every player in the NFL has their eyes set on a Super Bowl, especially a guy who has won a Heisman Trophy and played for a National Championship. But the first step to getting there is to win your division. The NFC South is wide open and [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] and his Carolina Panthers will be on the prowl to win the division and qualify for the 2023 NFL Playoffs.

From day one, the former Alabama quarterback has a chance to be the best starting quarterback in the division. The Buccaneers are replacing legend and seven-time Super Bowl Champion, Tom Brady, with a struggling Baker Mayfield, who was actually with the Panthers for most of 2022. The Saints brought in Derek Carr this offseason who is a quality quarterback, but they have struggled to ever fill the void of Brew Brees’s retirement after the 2020 season. Similar to the Saints, the Falcons struggled at the quarterback position last season after trading away long-time starter and Atlanta legend, Matt Ryan.

The Panthers probably have the best head coach in the division heading into the season as well, Frank Reich. It is Reich’s first year with the franchise, but it is a massive upgrade from Matt Rhule a year ago. Reich was the head coach of the Colts for five years and he led them to a 40-33-1 record and two playoff appearances. However, Reich is much better than those numbers indicate. When Reich took over Indianapolis in 2018, outside of Andrew Luck, the roster was a mess, yet he still led them to a 10-6 record and an AFC Divisional Game appearance.

After the 2018 season, Luck shockingly retired in his prime and sent the Colts franchise into a tailspin. Over the next four seasons he had four different starting quarterbacks and just wasn’t given a fair shake, but he still managed to have a winning record every year but one. After a 3-5-1 start to the season in 2022, the Colts fired Reich in a move that many people did not agree with. Reich is an outstanding coach, especially offensively, and with stability at the quarterback position he can be one of the best coaches in the league, certainly his division.

Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith, has finished 3rd and 4th in the NFC South during his two years in Atlanta with a 14-20 record. Dennis Allen of the Saints was first a head coach for the Raiders from 2012-2014 where he went 8-28. In his first year with New Orleans, he led them to a 7-10 record. Todd Bowles took over the reins in Tampa Bay last season after Super Bowl-winning head coach, Bruce Arians retired following the 2021 season. Bowles’s first stint was with the Jets where he went 24-40 from 2015-2018. In his first year with the Bucs, Bowles went 8-9. So, Reich certainly has a chance to take firm control over the division and win it for years to come.

Cameron Wolfe of Good Morning Football predicts also that the Panthers could be a playoff contender in 2023 saying, “When I talk to people in Carolina they say he (Young) does not act like a rookie. They said they are teaching him things that they teach quarterbacks in year two, year three… But, Thomas Brown, their offensive coordinator said ‘when you say ‘hike’ that dude is special. His ability to feel pressure within the pocket, his accuracy, the way he’s already taking hold of the locker room.'”

Pro Football Network ranks all 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL

Where do the former Alabama QBs rank among the top 32 at their position?

The most important position in all of sports is the quarterback. Not only is he responsible for running the offense, but he is typically a pillar in the community and the face of a franchise. Drafting quarterbacks is anything but an exact science, however, until you get the position right, you will not win many games in the NFL.

Alabama football went years without producing any serious NFL talent at the QB position, but since around 2016, they have turned into a QB factory. In fact, the last four starters for Alabama at the position have gone on to be high-end draft picks in [autotag]Tua Tagovailoa[/autotag], [autotag]Jalen Hurts[/autotag], [autotag]Mac Jones[/autotag] and [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag]. With high-end talents like Ty Simpson and Julian Sayin coming down the pipeline, I don’t think the end is near either.

Pro Football Network ranks the top 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL, and some of the answers may surprise you. Both Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa crack the top ten with Hurts coming in at No. 5 and Tagovailoa at No. 9. People may be surprised to see Tagovailoa so high on the list, but when he has been on the field he has been as efficient as anyone playing the position and finds ways to win games.

Jones doesn’t enter the list until No. 22 where he is behind guys like Kenny Pickett and Jacoby Brissett. I think Jones has all of the skills and tools to rise higher on the list, but he was a victim of poor circumstances in 2022 with a sub-par receiving room and an awful offensive coordinator.

Young is ranked at No. 30 on the list, the highest of all of the rookie quarterbacks. I think it is fair to not include any of the rookies higher on the list because they haven’t played a snap yet, but I expect Young to be in the top 15 range by the end of his rookie campaign.

Carolina Panthers all-time leading receiver raves about Bryce Young

Panthers all-time leading receiver compares Bryce Young to Drew Brees

From Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich to Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Burns, everyone in Charlotte knows they have a special player on their hands in [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag]. Young plays the quarterback position with such poise and fluidity, and it kind of meshes into his personality off the field.

Throughout the course of the NFL draft process, much was made of the former Alabama quarterback’s height, and not the attributes he brings to the table as a potential franchise quarterback and person. I never fully understood the argument as Young played and dominated in the SEC against some of the best teams and future NFL prospects. Fortunately, the Panthers didn’t understand the criticism either as they went ahead and selected Young with the first overall pick.

Panthers’ all-time leading wide receiver, Steve Smith Sr., is a huge fan of the pick. Smith posted a video to his Twitter account breaking down his evaluation of Young saying,

“Bryce Young reminds me of Drew Brees in essence of shoulders up and anticipation and knowing his own deficiencies. I am rooting for him because he is not trying to be something he isn’t. He is not going to throw a 70-yard bomb off his back foot like Aaron Rodgers has ever done. However, he will drop some dimes out there in the 0-22 yard range.”

There are still a few months until the start of the 2023 NFL season, but Young will likely be spending the remainder of the offseason preparing for his rookie campaign.

Top 20 passing leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history

These are the top 20 passing leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history — including Drew Brees, Andy Dalton, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston:

There’s a lot of things to be written about the New Orleans Saints’ history in the NFL, but it can’t be said that they have a strong tradition of high-level quarterback play. There’s a wide gulf stretching from Archie Manning’s heroic efforts in the franchise’s early days to the arrival of Aaron Brooks in the early 2000’s, followed up by the Hall of Fame resume that Drew Brees built for himself in the modern era.

For most of their history the Saints have struggled to find a solid starter. To put things in perspective, Derek Carr was widely panned for his performance with the Las Vegas Raiders last year, when he posted 3,522 passing yards in 15 games. But if he put up that exact total for the Saints in the fall he would immediately rank top-10 in the Saints record books, displacing Billy Joe Tolliver (3,343). The standard isn’t exactly sky-high. If Taysom Hill can match the 240 passing yards he logged a year ago he’ll be inside the top-15.

With that in mind, let’s look back on the 20 leading passers in Saints franchise history, ordered by career passing yards:

ESPN’s Mel Kiper projects top four picks in 2023 NFL draft will all be QB’s

Mel Kiper projects that Will Anderson will fall out of the top five in NFL draft

Across all sports, no position is more important than a quarterback to his football team. A quarterback not only runs the offense but is also going to be the face of the franchise and be a leader on the team. Teams want someone who will represent the franchise and city well, especially if they are going to use a first-round pick to land the player.

The 2023 quarterback draft class has as much buzz as any in recent years with four prospects who could all go in the top five of the draft. Alabama Crimson Tide’s [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] is considered the best in the class, but C.J. Stroud of Ohio State is high on some people’s lists as well. Will Levis of Kentucky and Anthony Richardson of Florida are also considered to be high-ceiling guys who are still a little bit more unrefined at the position.

ESPN NFL draft expert Mel Kiper released an updated mock draft this week that certainly turned some heads. To no surprise, he projects Bryce Young as the No. 1 overall to the Panthers followed by Stroud to the Texans. Things get interesting as the Titans trade up to three to get Richardson and the Colts land Levis at No. 4.

This then leaves arguably the two best defensive players, Will Anderson and Jalen Carter potentially available outside of the top five, which is insane. According to Kiper, the Lions would take Anderson at No. 6 overall pairing him up with Aidan Hutchinson, the No. 2 overall selection in 2022.

Which college produces the best NFL QBs?

Does Alabama have a case of claiming to be QBU?

College football fans love to argue over which program produces the best NFL talent.

For example, some might consider Alabama to be WRU because of the success of Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Jameson Williams, and many more. While others could argue LSU because of Odell Beckham Jr., Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase.

So, which school has earned the right to be called QBU? Since 2010 the Oklahoma Sooners have led the way with five quarterbacks drafted to the NFL including Sam Bradford, Landry Jones, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts.

However, the Crimson Tide aren’t far behind with four quarterbacks of their own including Greg McElroy, AJ McCarron, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones. Some would argue that you could include Jalen Hurts here because he earned his degree from Alabama, which would tie the Tide with the Sooners.

The Tide will tie the Sooners after this draft with Bryce Young likely to go No. 1 overall. I also think the quality of quarterbacks that the Tide has produced has been slightly better as Mac, Tua and Bryce are all considered franchise players.

DraftWire tabs Bryce Young as QB2 in 2023 NFL draft class

DraftWire doesn’t have Bryce Young as top QB in 2023 draft class

There is no position more coveted in the world of sports than a quarterback in the National Football League. A quarterback isn’t just a player who throws a football, he’s the one who is going to conduct your office on the field and represent your franchise off of it. So it is incredibly important to draft a quarterback that you can build your franchise around and trust to make good decisions.

The 2023 NFL draft class is one of the most QB-heavy classes we have seen in recent memory with a chance of four quarterback’s going in the top five picks. [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] of the Alabama Crimson Tide has long been considered the best prospect in this class with Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud sitting just behind him.

However, DraftWire believes that Stroud is actually the most talented signal caller in this class and that Young is QB2. They go on to say that Young is a “High-end field general with impressive accuracy and athleticism, but will have to answer questions about size and strength.”

Young’s size and strength were never an issue while playing in the SEC, the most pro-ready league in the NCAA so I don’t think it will be the issue it’s been made out to be. Whoever lands Young’s services is getting a star on the field, but an even better leader off of it to represent the city.

Bryce Young makes ‘similar plays as the QB in KC’ per ESPN analyst

Bryce Young looks a lot like the QB in Kansas City per ESPN analyst

The talk of the NFL combine to this point has been the size and weight of Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young and if he will be durable enough to hold up in the league. While size does matter, Young has every single intangible you look for in a franchise quarterback and can make any throw on the field.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has always been a huge fan of Young and he doubled down this week at the combine saying, “This young man has no pulse. No play is dead. The size can be a concern but his play is so hard to replicate… I said I wasn’t going to compare him to the guy who’s playing in Kansas City (Patrick Mahomes), and I’m not going to, but my goodness he looks like him.”

Young has reportedly been outstanding in all of his meetings with the NFL franchises and is a known savant of the game. During his time in Tuscaloosa, Young was known to show up to Monday practices with his only concepts and thoughts of the Tide’s next opponents which stood out to even Coach Saban.

I do think it is worth noting that Young has dominated the SEC for two years which is the most pro ready league in college football by far. We talk an awful lot about how great the 2021 Georgia team was, but Young had no issues throwing for over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns on them. Young is a lot more pro ready than people realize from his blitz recognitions to big play conversions this young man can do it all.

Whoever gets Young will have a franchise quarterback for the next 15 years, no doubt in my mind.
