Wisconsin football’s all-time leading passers

Wisconsin football’s all-time leading passers

The Wisconsin football program is not commonly known for its quarterback play.

It’s no Alabama, which has recently sent Bryce Young, Mac Jones and Tua Tagovailoa to the NFL. Or Clemson with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Or even Ohio State with C.J. Stroud, Justin Fields and others.

The Badgers produce linebackers and running backs, plus the occasional tight end.

But the narrative surrounding the program doesn’t mean there hasn’t been good-to-great quarterback play at the school. Russell Wilson in 2011 obviously rings a bell, but there are also numerous terrific years including Jack Coan in 2019, Alex Hornibrook in 2017 and Brooks Bollinger in 2002.

There is a recent addition to the list of the program’s all-time passing leaders, which prompted us to update the official list:

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes ranks fifth in passing yards ahead of regular season finale vs. Chargers

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes ranks fifth in passing yards ahead of Kansas City’s regular season finale against the #Chargers in Week 18.

Patrick Mahomes might not be a top candidate for the NFL’s MVP award this season, but his work in the Kansas City Chiefs offense has, nonetheless, been impressive enough to earn him a spot in the league’s top five for passing yards.

The two-time Super Bowl champion amassed 4,183 yards throwing to Chiefs’ pass-catchers in 2023, and with one game left to play, it isn’t out of the question that he could eclipse 4,500 with a dominant performance against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 18.

In the past, numbers like these have been the expectation for the reigning MVP, but given the inconsistency of his receiving corps this season, a top-five showing seems all the more impressive for Mahomes.

In a year that the Chiefs’ offense has been plagued by miscues, unforced errors, and outright lapses in judgment by everyone around him, Mahomes remains a force to be reckoned with for opposing defenses week in and week out.

Ranking all 32 starting NFL QBs by passing yards going into Week 14

Here’s how the top 35 quarterbacks stack up in passing yards this season.

Each week this season we have been ranking NFL quarterbacks using different stats. Usually we’ve gone with something a bit more complex than the traditional yards and touchdown totals you’ll see on Sunday broadcasts. Nevertheless, trends have emerged during the year – usually involving Brock Purdy at or near the top of the list. In an effort to get a breath of fresh air, this time around we’ve gone with passing yards. That yielded a different group of names at the top, including the guy who might be the best rookie quarterback in league history.

Here’s how the top 35 quarterbacks stack up in passing yards this season.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has third-most passing yards in NFL through Week 9

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has the third-most passing yards in the NFL through Week 9.

Despite having what some fans might consider a down season, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes is still in third place among NFL quarterbacks for passing yardage.

Only Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Howell, of the Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders respectively, have out-gained Mahomes through the air this season.

The Texas Tech product should be expected to drop off of this list after Kansas City takes its bye week ahead of a Super Bowl LVII rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.

While third place is an outstanding position for Mahomes to be in considering his struggles this season, he will need to turn on the jets in the coming weeks to get in a position to climb the leaderboard for the top spot.

Expect Mahomes to put together some special performances heading into the home stretch of the 2023 season as he looks to win consecutive MVPs and lift the Chiefs to another Super Bowl title.

Two former Crimson Tide quarterbacks rank in the Top five in NFL passing yards

Two former Alabama quarterbacks explode for massive Week 1 passing performances

After a long eight months without football, the NFL is back and quarterbacks, predictably, dominated the headlines in Week 1. Unfortunately, the leading story from the first week of the season is the ruptured Achilles of future Hall of Famer and New York Jets quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. While that is incredibly unfortunate, the season must go on and we can’t forget about some of the most stellar performances from Week 1.

On the field, the biggest story was Miami Dolphins quarterback [autotag]Tua Tagovaila[/autotag] who shredded the Los Angeles Chargers defense apart for 466 yards and three scores on Sunday. With a contract extension looming on the horizon, Tagovailoa will play some of the best football of his career this season and he couldn’t have sprinted out of the blocks any faster.

Tagovailoa led all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards in Week 1 with five quarterbacks going over the 300-yard mark. Of the top five quarterbacks in passing yards in Week 1, two of the signal callers were former Alabama stars. Below are the top five passers from the opening weekend of the 2023 season.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes leads NFL in passing yards since 2020

#Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was featured by PFF as one of three signal-callers to eclipse the 14,000 passing yard mark since 2020.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is known for his prolific statistics in Andy Reid’s offense and was featured by Pro Football Focus as one of three signal-callers to eclipse 14,000 passing yards since 2020.

Mahomes had elite company on PFF’s list and was joined by Tom Brady and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert as the only passers to reach the impressive milestone.

While Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, came close to matching Mahomes’ production, Herbert lagged behind both signal-callers with nearly 800 fewer yards than the reigning MVP.

Statistics like these can help put Mahomes’ dominance into perspective, given that 300-yard games and five-touchdown performances seem to be an expectation for him in Kansas City’s offense. No other quarterback in the NFL can truly rival his exceptional output on the gridiron, and Mahomes even makes it seem that those who come close are still left in a cloud of dust at the end of the season.

Top 20 passing leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history

These are the top 20 passing leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history — including Drew Brees, Andy Dalton, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston:

There’s a lot of things to be written about the New Orleans Saints’ history in the NFL, but it can’t be said that they have a strong tradition of high-level quarterback play. There’s a wide gulf stretching from Archie Manning’s heroic efforts in the franchise’s early days to the arrival of Aaron Brooks in the early 2000’s, followed up by the Hall of Fame resume that Drew Brees built for himself in the modern era.

For most of their history the Saints have struggled to find a solid starter. To put things in perspective, Derek Carr was widely panned for his performance with the Las Vegas Raiders last year, when he posted 3,522 passing yards in 15 games. But if he put up that exact total for the Saints in the fall he would immediately rank top-10 in the Saints record books, displacing Billy Joe Tolliver (3,343). The standard isn’t exactly sky-high. If Taysom Hill can match the 240 passing yards he logged a year ago he’ll be inside the top-15.

With that in mind, let’s look back on the 20 leading passers in Saints franchise history, ordered by career passing yards:

All-Time Saints Villains: Who has the most passing yards against New Orleans?

Who has thrown the most passing yards against the New Orleans Saints? Matt Ryan put up more yards than Joe Montana and Steve Young put together:

Who has thrown the most passing yards against the New Orleans Saints over the years? Obviously the era and circumstances they played in change things dramatically, but it’s still impressive that Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl-losing quarterback Matt Ryan put up more yards on New Orleans than San Francisco 49ers legends Joe Montana and Steve Young managed together.

We’re putting a lid on our weeklong series exploring the greatest opponents in Saints franchise history, having recapped the all-time leaders in touchdown passes, receiving yards, rushing yards, sacks, tackles for loss, and interceptions — all thanks to research from StatMuse. Let’s take one last look at these passers and be grateful the Saints aren’t competing with them anymore:

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes can complete impressive trifecta with win vs. Bengals

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes could become the 5th quarterback in NFL history to accomplish this feat with a win vs. the #Bengals. | from @TheJohnDillon

In a season where he has been absolutely dominant in every capacity, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes could again make his mark on the NFL’s record book with a win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

If Mahomes can get past his opponent this evening, he would become just the fifth player ever to lead the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns while also making the Super Bowl in the same season. This feat would put him in the company of Dan Marino, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning, who accomplished the task in 1984, 2001, 2007, and 2013, respectively.

While Mahomes is more likely to be focused on the task at hand rather than his place in the NFL’s record book, the fact that he is in a position to join such elite company demonstrates just how impressive his season has been. Clearly, Kansas City wouldn’t be the force it is in the AFC without his steady presence under center, and his inclusion in such a select list would only serve to prove just how prolific and successful Mahomes has been as the Chiefs’ starter this season.

Cincinnati is sure to put up a tough fight against Kansas City in this game, and despite his injured ankle, Mahomes seems destined for greatness win or lose.

Denver Broncos’ top-10 all-time leaders in passing yards

Despite playing just four years in Denver, Peyton Manning ranks second on the Broncos’ all-time passing list.

Denver Broncos two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback John Elway ranks first on the team’s all-time passing yards list, followed by fellow Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning, who played just four seasons with the team.
