2024 four-star defensive back Corian Gipson breaks down his top five schools

Corian Gipson named a top five on Wednesday.

One of the top 2024 prospects in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is narrowing down his recruiting process. Corian Gipson named a top five, including Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, TCU and Texas, on Wednesday.

Gipson is listed as the No. 7 overall cornerback and a top 10 player in the state of Texas for the 2024 cycle in the 247Sports’ composite rankings. He has close to 40 offers from programs around the country.

The Lancaster product is a two-sport athlete,  excelling on both the football field and the track. Gipson stands at 6-foot-0, 170 pounds, with room to grow. He will bring speed and physicality to the secondary at the college level.

Texas and TCU look to keep Gipson in his home state but the recent Clemson offer is catching his eye. He has no set timetable for a commitment date so far.

Gipson sat down with On3 Sports to break down what stands out about each of his final five schools.

Four-star CB Jaylon Guilbeau re-commits to Texas

A Thanksgiving surprise for Texas fans.

Jaylon Guilbeau gave Texas fans a pleasant Thanksgiving surprise as the Port Arthur product announced he has re-committed to the Horns.

The recruitment of Guilbeau has been a back-and-forth battle.

The four-star corner originally committed to Tom Herman’s staff in Sept. of 2020. Guilbeau remained solid to Texas through the coaching change until ultimately deciding to decommit in July.

Guilbeau committed to Gary Patterson at TCU two months later, but the Texas staff remained in contact. This proved to pay dividends as Patterson is now out at TCU, leading to Guilbeau deciding Texas was the better place for him.

Guilbeau is rated as the No. 24 cornerback in the country and the No. 30 overall prospect in Texas according to 247sports composite rankings.

Texas currently has the No. 7 ranked recruiting class in the country, tops in the Big 12. Landing Guilbeau will hopefully provide some much-needed momentum as Texas looks to close on some other top prospects before early signing day in Dec.

Texas receives crystal balls for 2023 four-star CB Jamel Johnson

247Sports crystal ball predictions pour in for 2023 CB Jamel Johnson.

When compared to rivals, Texas’ 2023 class has gotten off to a slow start. Five-star running back Rueben Owens was the only commit at one point but reopened his recruitment as prospects were allowed to take visits. Nobody has joined since.

Not to say Steve Sarkisian or his staff have not done a good job but the movement has been slow.

There seems to be a chance to land a commitment in the near future with four-star cornerback Jamel Johnson. Three 247Sports crystal balls were inserted in favor of Texas from Mike Roach and Nick Harris of Horns247, plus national writer Steve Wiltfong.

Johnson comes out of Arlington, TX, and Seguin High School. He holds 32 total offers, including six Big 12 schools and top SEC programs such as Alabama and LSU.

He would be a fantastic edition to get the 2023 class underway.

Four-star CB Jaylon Guilbeau decommits from Texas

On Thursday, Terry Joseph’s first recruiting cycle received negative news. Four-star CB Jaylon Guilbeau announced his decommitment from Texas.

Texas seemed to be trending in a positive direction within its defensive back class over the past week. Four-star cornerback/safety Austin Jordan committed over the weekend, while four-star safety Bryce Anderson is expected to visit on July 30.

Early Thursday morning, Terry Joseph’s first recruiting cycle inevitably received some negative news.

Four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau has announced his decommitment from Texas. He was the longest-tenured Longhorn commit, dating back to the Tom Herman days.

You can read his statement via Twitter here:

I would lke to start off by thanking all of my friends, mentors, coaches, and loved ones. But none of this would be possible without the trust in the Lord.

After careful consideration with my family and countless hours of prayer, I have decided that it is in my interest to reopen my recruitment and decommit from the University of Texas.

Please respoect my decsision. Than you $Hookem coaching staff and fans for everything.

Corinthians 5:7 – For we walk by faith, not by sight

Two in-state schools are surely going to be in hot pursuit of Guilbeau in TCU and Texas A&M. Both were able to host the four-star cornerback on visits during the month of June.

Nick Harris of Horns247 has already put in a crystal ball prediction for Guilbeau to end up a Horned Frog. Anytime Gary Patterson is going after an in-state defensive player, you know he is a good one.

The cornerback could end up being a major miss by Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

On the 247Sports composite, Guilbeau ranks as the No. 152 player and the No. 17 cornerback in the country. Within the state of Texas, the four-star breaks the top 30 prospects at No. 29.
