Texas’ season began in spectacular fashion, winning the Camping World Maui Invitational. Wins over Davidson, Indiana and North Carolina have already put Shaka Smart in an excellent position to make the NCAA Tournament.

Tight games against Davidson and North Carolina were outside a historic blowout of Indiana. The Longhorns showed how dangerous they can be on the offensive end while playing energetic, lockdown defense.

Now, Texas will move onto the rest of the nonconference schedule and conference play. A game against Villanova plus Big 12 opponents are going to be quite the mountain to climb. The journey has just begun for the Longhorns.

Here are three things we learned in Texas’ championship run:

Five things we learned from Texas’ win over UTEP

Texas arguably had the most impressive opening night in the country, defeating UTEP 59-3. Here are five things we learned from the win.

Texas arguably had the most impressive opening night in the country, defeating UTEP 59-3. Tom Herman’s squad was impressive from top to bottom, ranging from starters to freshman getting their first playing time in a Longhorn uniform.

It was the first display of offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and defensive coordinator Chris Ash. We learned a lot from the season opener on both sides of the ball.

Now with a week before the Big 12 opener, Herman will make small adjustments to play at the same level. It was an encouraging start, but the Longhorns must be able to carry it over against Power Five opponents.

5 things we learned from Chiefs training camp media availability

Andy Reid and Chiefs players spoke to the media from training camp.

Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid and a number of players spoke to the media on Tuesday as training camp continued at Arrowhead Stadium. We heard from some newer players like Kelechi Osemele and DeAndre Washington. We also heard from some defensive leaders like Frank Clark and Charvarius Ward.

Here’s a look at five things we learned during the course of the media availability:

The Chiefs are getting Clyde Edwards-Helaire ready to play

“We’re going to get Clyde ready to play and he’s going to get ready to play. We’re lucky that we have a pretty good nucleus of running backs there. It’d be great to have Damien, but on the other hand, I think if you had to pick a position where you have some talent, that’s a position that we can work with. We’re in pretty good position—I think Brett (Veach) and those guys did a good job of that, kind of stockpiling that position. For your answer on Clyde, we’re going to get him ready to play, and he’s wired that way. The more you get to know him, I think you’ll understand his maturity and kind of how he’s wired.” – Chiefs HC Andy Reid

All eyes are on Edwards-Helaire to become the bell-cow running back in Kansas City. Without Damien Williams, the ball is in his court to earn the job as ‘the guy’ for the Chiefs. Andy Reid and the coaching staff are getting him ready to play, but really at the end of the day, it’ll be up to him to seize the moment.
