Texas Longhorns Football: Five plays that stood out from the win vs UTEP

Saturday’s win was memorable for Texas, despite the opponent. Here are five plays that stood out from the win against UTEP on Saturday:

Texas’ season-opening victory against UTEP was the most impressive throughout the Big 12 on Saturday, if not the entire country. Both offensively and defensively, the Longhorns looked as if they were on a different level than years before.

Offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich exploded in the first half, scoring points on seven of the eight offensive first-half possessions. Sam Ehlinger set records, throwing for five touchdowns. To make matters better, Yurcich stated he would run a “vanilla” offense before Big 12 play.

Texas’ defense also tried not to show too much but still played at an elite level. Defensive coordinator Chris Ash switch to the 4-3 base defense while running a lot of nickel is taking shape. Now, it will be time to test it against Big 12 offenses.

It was a memorable win for the Longhorns, despite the opponent. Here are five plays that stood out from the win against UTEP on Saturday:

Texas safety B.J. Foster ‘apologetic’ for his actions during UTEP game

Following the report that Texas safety B.J. Foster quit the team on Saturday, Tom Herman provided an update on his status with the team.

The last 48 hours have been a roller coaster for the Texas Longhorns and safety B.J. Foster. It was reported on Sunday morning by Anwar Richardson of Rivals that Foster quit the team in the third quarter of the Longhorns 59-3 win over UTEP. According to Pro Football Focus, Foster played just eight snaps on the night. In a bit of frustration, he allegedly quit the team. That was just the beginning of the roller coaster.

It was later reported by Chip Brown of 247Sports that Foster was in fact with the team during a lifting session at 12 pm Sunday. That was enough to cause a bit of confusion about what the status of B.J. Foster is with the team. Richardson later reported that he had met with the team and would remain a Texas Longhorn.

Head coach Tom Herman met with the media on Monday and provided an update on the former five-star recruit.

“B.J (Foster) obviously let his frustrations get the best of him,” Herman continued “was very contrite, very apologetic. We will handle the discipline in house. He knows what he did was wrong and let his frustration get the best of him. It’s ok to be frustrated but we need to be able to control our actions.” Herman went on to say “it would be water under the bridge for us and this team.”

Sam Ehlinger named Big 12 offensive player of the week

To commemorate Sam Ehlinger’s historic night against UTEP, the quarterback has been named the Big 12 football offensive player of the week.

Sam Ehlinger had a historic night on Saturday, going for 426 passing yards and five touchdowns. All but four of the yards came in the first half, setting school records in both yards and touchdowns in a single half.

To commemorate the quarterback’s night against UTEP, Ehlinger has been named the Big 12 football offensive player of the week. In what was a lousy week for the conference as a whole, Ehlinger stole the national spotlight with his performance.

Mike Yurcich’s offense seems to fit Ehlinger perfectly, despite it only being the first game. The Sept. 26 matchup against Texas Tech will be another test to see if the Longhorns can do it consistently.

On Sunday, Ehlinger was named the Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week. The Big 12 honor marks his second weekly award of the 2020 season.

Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler could have been seen as the only competition to Ehlinger for the award. However, the redshirt sophomore only threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns. The two quarterbacks are setting up for an exciting Red River Shootout on Oct. 10.

Report: Texas safety B.J. Foster was with team in lifting session

According to a report form 247Sports’ Chip Brown, Texas safety B.J. Foster was with the team after he allegedly quit in Saturday’s game.

The wild Sunday following the 59-3 victory over UTEP continues. Earlier in the day Anwar Richardson of Rivals reported that Texas safety B.J. Foster quit on the team during the third quarter of Saturday’s game. He noted that Foster was upset about a lack of playing time in the game. During the blowout opening game, Foster played a total of eight snaps according to Pro Football Focus.

Foster was listed behind Chris Brown on the opening week depth chart that was released by the Longhorns. Jerrin Thompson and Tyler Owens would play more snaps than Foster and it probably didn’t set well with him. Chip Brown of 247Sports is reporting that Foster took part in the lifting session at 12 pm on Sunday.

This situation feels eerily similar to the one early this offseason with Anthony Cook. He left the team and entered into the transfer portal before cooler heads prevailed and he returned to the team. Cook as you know was listed behind Chris Adimora at the spur position.

As this wild situation continues, Longhorns Wire will keep you posted.

Texas arguably had the most impressive opening night in the country, defeating UTEP 59-3. Tom Herman’s squad was impressive from top to bottom, ranging from starters to freshman getting their first playing time in a Longhorn uniform.

It was the first display of offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and defensive coordinator Chris Ash. We learned a lot from the season opener on both sides of the ball.

Now with a week before the Big 12 opener, Herman will make small adjustments to play at the same level. It was an encouraging start, but the Longhorns must be able to carry it over against Power Five opponents.

Texas started the 2020 season in the best way they possibly could, demolishing UTEP 59-3. It was a record-setting night for quarterback Sam Ehlinger and the Longhorn offense.

Playing the entire first half plus one drive in the second half, Ehlinger set a career-high in passing yards and passing touchdowns. His final stats sit at 25 of 33, with 426 yards and five touchdowns. Backup quarterbacks Casey Thompson and Hudson Card played the majority of the second half.

Wide receiver was a major question entering the season and Joshua Moore answered them. The redshirt sophomore opened the game with a 78-yard touchdown. Ehlinger found him five more times for a total of 127 yards.

Tarik Black also had a solid debut, securing five receptions for 80 yards. No other Longhorn receiver had more than three receptions.

Moving to the defensive side of the ball, Texas only gave up three points, the fewest since 2017’s matchup against San Jose State. UTEP’s offense only produced 240 yards. Josh Thompson stood out as the defensive player of the game, emerging as the top cornerback.

With UTEP handled, Texas will now turn its attention to Texas Tech for its Big 12 opener. Traveling to Lubbock, the Longhorns have its last five games on the road against the Red Raiders.
