Texas quarterback target Arch Manning named five-star prospect by Rivals

Rivals released their five-star ratings for the 2023 class, with Arch Manning coming in at No. 3 overall.

Steve Sarkisian is widely viewed as one of the greatest coaches in the country when it comes to quarterbacks. His lineage of NFL prospects dating back to his time as an assistant at USC is impressive. Tua Tagovailoa, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, and Mac Jones, a presumed first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, were the two latest names placed on Sarkisian’s resume.

Now that he is the head coach at Texas, quarterbacks across the country have been intrigued by playing for Sarkisian. Five-star Maalik Murphy was the first example with his commitment in February. Another big name could be coming from the 2023 class in Arch Manning. Texas is squarely in the running for the New Orleans native.

Rivals released their initial five-star ratings for the 2023 class, with Manning coming in at No. 3 overall. Defensive end Lebbeus Overton and quarterback Malachi Nelson were the only two players rated ahead.

In an interview with 247Sports, Manning said his relationship with Coach Sarkisian goes back to when he was in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide will be a force in his recruitment, as long as Clemson, LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.

Landing the five-star quarterback would bring a ton of momentum into the 2023 recruiting class, much like Quinn Ewers did when he originally committed. Texas already has a pledge from Rueben Owens, the No. 26 player according to 247Sports.

Texas commit Maalik Murphy named a player to watch during spring season

MaxPreps ranked the top 50 players to watch for this spring and Texas commit Maalik Murphy came in at No. 6 on their list.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Texas’ recruiting class will be how five-star quarterback Maalik Murphy performs during California’s spring season. COVID-19 wrecked the fall and Murphy’s high school, Serra, has a six-game season beginning March 12.

MaxPreps ranked the top 50 players to watch for this spring and Murphy came in at No. 6 on the list. Here is what the website had to say about the future Longhorn:

Split time under center last year and expect a monster junior campaign as the five-star quarterback takes over as the full-time starter.

Murphy has yet to take snaps as the full-time starter. He sat behind Doug Brumfield, a three-star prospect who was a member of UNLV’s 2020 recruiting class. Murphy’s five-star rating has come from 7v7 competitions and camps.

Question marks about Steve Sarkisian taking a commitment from a player who is largely inexperienced have seemingly risen. While Murphy has some of the biggest potential in the 2022 class, regardless of position, having an idea of what he can bring to the table in game-like scenarios would be nice.

Thankfully, Murphy will have live-action film in just under a week.

The future of the football program relies on Sarkisian’s quarterback take in the 2022 class. If Murphy ends up being the guy, this spring season is going to be crucial toward his development.

Texas Football Recruiting: Pros and cons of Maalik Murphy’s commitment

As with every recruitment, there are pros and cons of taking players into your class.

Steve Sarkisian landed his first five-star prospect as the head coach of Texas on Saturday in quarterback Maalik Murphy. Since Murphy is a California native, Sarkisian’s west coast ties were one of the biggest reasons the Longhorns were able to bring him in.

On the 247Sports composite, the quarterback ranks as the No. 30 player in the country. Murphy has been classified as a pro-style QB and is No. 2 at his position behind only Quinn Ewers. Since recruiting grades were kept, he ranks as the fourth-highest quarterback that Texas has landed.

As with every recruitment, there are pros and cons of taking players into your class. With Murphy, there are a lot more positives than negatives. He projects as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2022 recruiting cycle but his lack of experience will leave questions.

Here are the pros and cons of Maalik Murphy’s commitment to Texas.

Watch: 2022 Texas Longhorns commit Quinn Ewers in action

Texas top commit in the 2022 class was in action on Thursday night. Check out some of the highlights from Quinn Ewers.

As we get deeper into the month of September, high school football is starting to ramp up. That includes the state of Texas where 2022 quarterback commit Quinn Ewers finally is back on the field. Southlake Carroll was in action against DeSoto and Ewers was on full display early on.

The No. 1 quarterback of the class, Ewers committed to Texas early on in the process with another year plus before he can sign his letter of intent. He is the highest rated quarterback to commit to Texas since the legendary Vince Young. At the time of his commitment, he had a perfect rating that has since dropped ever so slightly.

On Thursday night, Ewers was showing off his arm talent. This backfoot throw with a flick of the wrist went 60 yards on target. That was, dare I say, Patrick Mahomes-esque? He definitely has a live arm.

Seeing the top recruit in their 2022 class should give fans a lot of excitement about the future. With his arm talent, the sky is the limit for the Texas offense. Whoever is the quarterback after Sam Ehlinger moves on to the NFL will be put on notice. Ewers is coming in hot to take the starting role at the school he grew up rooting for.
