Texas Football Recruiting: Pros and cons of Maalik Murphy’s commitment

As with every recruitment, there are pros and cons of taking players into your class.

PRO – The potential

Despite being incredibly raw and not being able to prove himself on the field, the potential in Murphy is obvious. His 6-4.5, 225-pound frame for a pro-style quarterback is something colleges across the nation crave. Murphy had offers from Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, and Oregon.

In May of 2019, Murphy was recorded throwing the ball over 70 yards after finishing his freshman year.

Greg Biggins of 247Sports has compared him to former Heisman winner and No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston out of Florida State.

Has lacked ideal production through first two years but
has every tool you could want in an elite quarterback and has shined in multiple off season events. He has plus size and arm strength, is accurate to all three levels of the field, is a smart kid who understands timing and anticipation and when to take a little off his throws.

Sarkisian has proven to be a phenomenal quarterback developer throughout his career. Future potential first-round pick and Heisman Trophy winner Mac Jones is just the latest example. From the moment Murphy steps on campus, he will steadily improve despite the lack of experience under the leadership of Sarkisian and QB coach A.J. Milwee.
