Texas Football Recruiting: Pros and cons of Maalik Murphy’s commitment

As with every recruitment, there are pros and cons of taking players into your class.

PRO – Two quarterback class is still possible

Just because Texas took the commitment of Murphy, it does not mean there is not another quarterback slot within the 2022 recruiting class. The two guys the Longhorns have been going after are five-star and current Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers and four-star Austin Westlake star Cade Klubnik. Both should still be in play for Steve Sarkisian.

Klubnik at the moment seems like the most likely as he is uncommitted and right in the backyard. He recently won the 6A-DI state championship over Ewers’ Southlake Carrol, winning offensive MVP during the game. He measures in at 6-2.5 and 178 pounds and has drawn interest from Auburn, Florida, and North Carolina. Klubnik’s recruitment appears to be wide open.

Ewers remains the 2022 prospect that Texas will continue to push for until his letter of intent is signed elsewhere. After Tom Herman was fired, the door was reopened and the Longhorns were able to slowly work their way back into his recruitment. Having a preexisting relationship with Sarkisian has helped, but there is still a long way to go on that front.
