Former Ohio State running back Evan Pryor makes transfer decision

In case you missed it — Evan Pryor will be headed down I-71 for his next career move. #GoBucks

‘Tis the season for mistletoe, Christmas lights, and reindeer. It’s also the season for transfer portal news and the Ohio State football program has had plenty of it.

The latest is where former Buckeye running back Even Pryor will be headed after entering the transfer portal. He took to social media Wednesday to share a graphic of him in his new school’s uniform with a caption of “committed,” and he won’t be going far.

According to the announcement, Pryor will be headed down I-71 to the Cincinnati program.

Pryor has been besieged by injury and others ahead of him on the depth chart since arriving in Columbus. He gained 98 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries (4.7 avg.) during his freshman campaign in 2021, then did not have a carry at all in 2022 before limited action last season, rushing the ball 19 times for 49 yards (2.6 avg.) in mop up duty.

We’ll continue to root for Pryor and hope that the rest of his career down in the Queen City is free of injury but full of production. Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.

Ohio State football loses running back to transfer portal

Another one lost to the portal

It looked like [autotag]Evan Pryor[/autotag] would have a productive Ohio State football career, but an injury during his freshman season held him back.

The North Carolina native was the No. 6 running back and No. 83 overall prospect in his class on the 247Sports composite. He selected the Buckeyes over offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU and a host of others.

Unfortunately, Pryor announced that he will move on from the Ohio State program, entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility. In limited carries over the last two season, Pryor rushed for 147 yards with a score, but just wasnā€™t nearly as explosive as he was prior to his injury.

We wish Evan the best at finding his new football home.

Ohio State statistical leaders through three games

These guys in particular could be a problem Saturday.

I admit that I probably should leave something like this to the folks overs at Buckeyes Wire. Then again, that’s the whole idea behind the College Wire sites. Every site has something unique to offer, and Fighting Irish Wire is no exception. We encourage you to check out all sites to get your college sports fix, particularly at this time of year when college football is reigning supreme throughout the land.

Now that the shameless plugging is out of the way, let’s talk about why you really clicked on this link. You want to see which Ohio State players are most likely to give Notre Dame problems in one of the most anticipated college football games of the year. These are the players who are most likely to stop a resurgent start to the season for the Irish in its tracks. You probably will see a few of them in the NFL soon.

If you aren’t familiar with these Buckeyes yet, get yourself familiar with them right now:

On3 ranks Ohio State as having one of best running back units in college football for 2023

Ohio State gets recognized as one of the best running back rooms in college football entering next season. #GoBucks

On3’s Jesse Simonton has started releasing position group rankings for next season this week. The rankings are meant to reflect not just the ten best players at the position, but also factor in the depth of the unit.

On Tuesday, Simonton ranked the Buckeyes as the fourth-best running back unit trailing only Michigan, Alabama, and Penn State.

After an injury-riddled season at running back last season, the Buckeyes come into next season with a lot of depth and options. If both are fully healthy, Treveyon Henderson and Miyan Williams will enter the season as first and second on the depth chart.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Henderson arrived at Ohio State with a lot of hype surrounding him as the top-ranked back in the 2021 class. He quickly showed he was worth the hype rushing for 1,248 yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman.

Unfortunately, last season he lacked explosiveness for much of the season as he was dealing with a foot injury throughout the season that kept him sidelined for five games.Ā  If he’s able to stay at 100 percent throughout this season, he’ll get the most touches in this offense.

Williams also dealt with injuries last season including a lower leg injury that heavily hindered him in the Michigan and Georgia games.

He showed last season, however, that regardless of whether Henderson is healthy or not he’ll still get his fair share of carries. He was very efficient as a runner, breaking tackles at a high rate and leading the team with 14 rushing touchdowns.

Henderson and Williams will likely be 1-2 on the depth chart if healthy.Ā  However, there are at least two more intriguing options that will compete for consistent touches in this offense and more solid depth pieces beyond that.

Evan Pryor is a former top 100 player and sixth-ranked running back in the 2021 class. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in fall camp last season and missed the whole year.Ā  Pryor is an electrifying back and has the talent to get touches in this offense.

Dallan Hayden is another very good option at running back, stepping up numerous times last season when Henderson and Williams were dealing with injuries.

As a true freshman, Hayden ran for a total of 553 yards and five touchdowns on 111 carries. This included three games of over 100 rushing yards, with a 146-yard three-touchdown performance against Maryland.

Chip Trayanum is a transfer from Arizona State who originally intended to switch positions to linebacker. However, after some injuries at running back last season, he switched back.Ā  He ended up getting some action as he had 14 carries for 83 yards in the Michigan game.Ā  He presents a good depth option as a power back.

The remaining four running backs are Cayden Saunders, TC Caffey, Will Hartson, and Chase Brecht. They aren’t likely to get significant playing time but are solid depth options to have on the roster.

Ranking Ohio State running backs by 247Sports composite recruiting ranking

Ranking Ohio State running backs by 247Sports composite recruiting ranking #GoBucks

TheĀ Ohio State football program has five running backs on scholarship and has the appearance of being super deep. Still, as any Buckeye fan knows, this unit struggled mightily with injuries last season, resulting in both a linebacker and wide receiver taking snaps at the position.

That linebacker we speak of was Chip Trayanum, who was a running back at Arizona State before coming to Columbus. He is named on the list below, but taking snaps in 2022 was not part of the plan. This unit received a significant boost when Miyan Williams announced he was returning to Ohio State, but hopes are high that some of these highly rated guys reach their potential in 2023.

In the following slides, we rank the scholarship running backs on the roster based on their 247Sports recruiting ranking.

Ohio State football issues availability report for Wisconsin game, notable names missing

Ohio State football issues availability report for Wisconsin game #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program has issued the availability report for the game against Wisconsin, and there are a few notable names that will not be taking part in game No. 4.

With the game under Toledo under its belt, Ohio State has a few guys that were bumped and bruised against the Rockets, but most of the names on the list just transitioned over from the previous week. The most notable name on this list is star wide receiver, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is listed as unavailable for today.

All of the reports from this week were that we would see Jaxon Smith-Njigba back in action, but this either means that his injury is more serious than originally thought or they feel confident in not needing him for victory.

Ohio State issues availability report for Notre Dame game

Ohio State issues availability report for Notre Dame game

The fine folks with the Ohio State football team have issued the availability report for the game against Notre Dame, and there are a few notable names that will not be taking part in game No. 1.

The most notable name on the following list is Julian Fleming. The former five-star recruit from the state of Pennsylvania has suffered more than his fair share of injuries throughout his career and most were extremely excited to see him at full strength for 2022.

Fleming is a tough cat who despite injury is still listed as a game-time decision. Early in the summer, it was reported that Fleming had his shoulder pop out during a scrimmage and still caught a touchdown only a moment later, so I would be willing to bet he plays today.

Game-Time Decision:

  • WR Julian Fleming

Unavailable:

  • RB Evan Pryor
  • CB Lloyd McFarquhar
  • LB Mitchell Melton

Ohio State running back Evan Pryor out for the season

Even Pryor’s season is unfortunately over before it had a chance to begin.

As much as we hate it, injuries are part of the game. It hurts even more when an injury comes before the season even begins. And it’s a reminder of how quickly things can change.

Unfortunately, running back Evan Pryor’s season is apparently over before it began. It has been reported he suffered a knee injury in camp on Monday.

While Pryor is listed as a third-string running back behind TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams, expectations were high for the second-year running back from North Carolina. He had a phenomenal spring game and his unique skills were drawing rave reviews from coaches.

At this point, the nature of the injury has not been specified, however, Pryor seems to be in good spirits already planning for a comeback.

Losing Pryor is a big blow to the Buckeyes. It leaves them with just three running backs on scholarship. Master Teague departed for the NFL, Steele Chambers made the move to linebacker, and Marcus Crowley medically retired in the spring after an injury-plagued career.

True freshman, Dallan Hayden will presumably be thrust into the third-string spot behind Henderson and Williams. Hopefully, the Buckeyes can make it through the rest of camp without any further serious injuries.

WATCH: check out these Spring Game highlights #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes have finished their spring practices and it looks like Scarlet earned the win over Gray to the tune of 34-0 and plenty of guys made some exciting plays including the usual suspects of C.J. Stroud and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but we also got to see some new faces emerge as possible superstars like Evan Pryor.

It should be noted that all three quarterbacks threw for touchdown passes and Devin Brown looked extremely impressive completing 11 of his 24 passing attempts for 141 yards and a touchdown. Miyan Wiliams led all running backs with 15 carries for 101 yards and Evan Pryor was the leading receiver with four receptions for 44 yards, but let’s dive into highlights!

WATCH: Evan Pryor shows speed to endzone

WATCH: Evan Pryor shows speed to endzone #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes are continuing to flex their muscle on offense and this time displaying the rapid fire-power that is in the backfield. We obviously know that TreVeyon Henderson is a legit superstar and that Miyan Williams can start for any other school in the nation, but Evan Pryor was another highly touted recruit who is displaying his speed today.

Pryor is making some noise today as he has had four carries for 48 yards taking one 22 yards for a touchdown. With a healthy average for 6.9 yards per carry, Pryor should be on every fan’s radar as the possible lightning to Henderson’s thunder.
