ESPN moves Aggies in new FPI rankings

ESPN’s new FPI rankings have Aggies in a new position

ESPN recently updated their Preseason FPI rankings, known as the Football Power Index, for the upcoming 2022 college football season. During each season, the FPI rankings are updated on a weekly basis and are “designed to measure team strength and predict game and season outcomes.”

When examining the rankings in their current state, the regular blue blood programs that have been preseason darlings year to year are near the top, while the Aggies are in what many will view as a surprising new spot, compared to their previous ranking earlier this year.

One can only ponder that any lack of confidence for the 2022 Texas A&M football team stems from the ongoing quarterback battle that will begin to heat up in a matter of weeks between Max Johnson, Haynes King, and Conner Weigman, as ESPN has based some of these rankings off of the “most important” position in football in recent years.

The best part of the FPI Preseason rankings is their analytic approach vs. purely opinion-based rankings, most working off of the team’s success a year prior, incoming talent, and the players retained, which always spurs some good debate as we all wait for the new season to begin.

Now, here are the brand new ESPN Preseason College Football Top 15 FPI rankings for the 2022 season!

The toughest schedules in college football ahead of the 2022 season

Here’s a look at the toughest schedules in college football ahead of the 2022 season per ESPN’s FPI.

Big Ten teams ranked by ESPN’s newly released Football Power Index (FPI)

Big Ten teams ranked according to the latest ESPN Football Percentage Index (FPI). Where do you think the folks at ESPN have it wrong?

Despite the finicky nature of the weather lately, the calendar does indeed say it’s spring in the Midwest. And you know what that means as a college football fan. Yep, spring games are in the air with flowers blooming, snow turning to sleet, and the occasional sunny, warm day.

It also means that ESPN has recently released its new and updated Football Power Index (FPI) rankings and ratings for all of the college football FBS teams, giving us something to talk about.

The FPI isn’t always correct of course, but it’s a formula designed by resident analytics guru Bill Connelly and is designed as “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.”

In this case, it’s a look ahead to try and determine how good a team will be before anything really happens on the field for 2022.

Still, we thought it’d be interesting to see what this wacky, mad-scientist formula says about the pecking order of the Big Ten, and so off we go. Here’s a look at each Big Ten football team and how it stacks up in the newest ESPN FPI rankings.

We start from the least ranked to the best.

Auburn remains inside top 20 of ESPN’s FPI

Auburn is still getting some love from ESPN’s Football Power Index.

Auburn is still getting some love in some form of official ranking.

While the Tigers were dropped from both the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll and the AP poll, they are still sitting inside the top 20 (at no. 20) of ESPN’s ‘Football Power Index,’ which is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.

Auburn currently is projected to finish 7-5 per the FPI. They have a 0.1% chance of winning out, easily the lowest chance of any team inside the top 30. Auburn has a 5.8% chance to win the SEC West, which is the second-highest chance of any team from the West behind Alabama, who has a 76.4% chance to come out on top.

Auburn travels up to Fayetville to take on the No. 17 Arkansas Razorbacks this Saturday. The Razorbacks have a 60% chance to win according to ESPN’s FPI.

Where each Big 12 team lands in ESPN’s updated FPI rankings after Week 5

Where each Big 12 team ranks in ESPN’s updated FPI

The Big 12 has one of the best conferences according to ESPN’s updated FPI.

Using team strengths coupled with their offensive, defensive and special teams projected value, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) predicts how teams will finish the 2021 college football season.

The Big 12 is all over the board, but the conference is finally receiving the respect it deserves. The FPI foresees the Big 12 having the second-toughest conference schedule in the nation. The most recent rankings feature five teams in the top 25.

Although Oklahoma has been sitting pretty at the top for a while now, this season could be the best conference competition it has faced since before the days of clamoring for Texas to be back.

Let’s take a look where each of the Big 12 teams ranked in ESPN’s most recent FPI rankings.

Texas moves up to No. 7 in ESPN’s updated college football FPI

ESPN ranks Texas 7th in their updated FPI rankings.

ESPN recently published a new College Football Power Index for the 2021 season, which is a system that predicts how teams will perform based off team strength. FPI ratings are based off predictive offensive, defensive, and special teams value, as measured by a function of expected points that will be added.

The Longhorns made quite a leap, moving all the way up to No. 7. In the first rankings that were released in the spring, Texas was No. 12.

The move to seventh puts Texas above schools such as Notre Dame, Big 12 foe Iowa State, and Miami. Passing Iowa State also indicates that the Longhorns have a better chance of making/winning the Big 12, and an even better shot to make the College Football Playoff.

Even with the brand new coaching staff and new players all over the field, the FPI gave Texas the second-best chance to win the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. The Longhorns were also given a 11.6% chance to make the College Football Playoff.

The updated FPI indicates that the Big 12 will be home to the second toughest conference schedule across all conferences.

The system does view Texas as the most likely to challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 crown, which can be attributed to the amount of talent on the roster. Steve Sarkisian’s offense will have a more aggressive nature, and the defense is likely to be more productive as well. This can very well be the best season of Longhorn football in a decade.

Auburn football’s place among all SEC teams in ESPN’s FPI Rankings

ESPN’s Power Football Index rankings were released last week with a lot of controversy.

The ESPN Football Power Index rankings came out this week and, whoa buddy, are there some shocks and surprises on there.

Where do we start? Surely it has to be with Mississippi State coming in at an eye-popping No. 8. We are sure Mike Leach and the Bulldogs will improve in his second season in Starkville but that is a major jump up.

So where does Auburn stand right now? Let’s take a look at all 14 teams.
