ESPN recently updated their Preseason FPI rankings, known as the Football Power Index, for the upcoming 2022 college football season. During each season, the FPI rankings are updated on a weekly basis and are “designed to measure team strength and predict game and season outcomes.”
When examining the rankings in their current state, the regular blue blood programs that have been preseason darlings year to year are near the top, while the Aggies are in what many will view as a surprising new spot, compared to their previous ranking earlier this year.
One can only ponder that any lack of confidence for the 2022 Texas A&M football team stems from the ongoing quarterback battle that will begin to heat up in a matter of weeks between Max Johnson, Haynes King, and Conner Weigman, as ESPN has based some of these rankings off of the “most important” position in football in recent years.
The best part of the FPI Preseason rankings is their analytic approach vs. purely opinion-based rankings, most working off of the team’s success a year prior, incoming talent, and the players retained, which always spurs some good debate as we all wait for the new season to begin.
