Report: Taylor Decker and David Montgomery both out vs. Packers

The report goes the opposite direction from the expectations for both players

The questionable status for Detroit Lions starters Taylor Decker and David Montgomery led to considerable optimism for both standouts to return to action in Thursday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers. However, a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero from gameday morning throws a cold shower onto the excitement.

Neither Decker nor Montgomery are expected to play, according to Pelissero.

“There was some optimism early in the week, but I am told Montgomery is not expected to play tonight,” Pelissero stated early Thursday. Montgomery missed the Week 3 win over Atlanta with a thigh bruise.

The same was true of Decker, Pelissero said thereafter. Decker has been out since Week 1 with a high ankle sprain. That flies in the face of the genuine optimism head coach Dan Campbell showed for both players in press conferences during the week.

One bit of good news from Pelissero’s morning spot: cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is now expected to make his Lions debut in Green Bay.

If Decker cannot play, as Pelissero indicated, Penei Sewell will remain as the left tackle and rookie Colby Sorsdal appears in line to get his first NFL start while taking over Sewell’s regular right tackle position.

Update: Pelissero admitted he got the information incorrect. Kudos to him for owning it.

Lions final injury report for Week 4: 3 players ruled out, 5 starters listed as questionable

Lions final injury report for Week 4: 3 players ruled out, 5 starters listed as questionable

The final Detroit Lions injury report and game status for the short Week 4 preparations has ruled out three players. Along with the trio ruled out by the training staff, several others are listed officially as questionable for Thursday night’s matchup in Green Bay with the Packers.

Offensive linemen Matt Nelson and Halapoulivaati Vaitai are out with their knee injuries. It’s also a knee injury that will sideline fullback Jason Cabinda, who was listed out after suffering the injury in the first practice of the week.

Five players are listed as questionable. All are projected starters when healthy:

Jackson was the only one of the questionable players to see action in the Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Emmanuel Moseley is close to making his Lions debut

Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is close to making his Lions debut, though it probably won’t happen until Week 5

In the final days of Lions training camp in late August, there was a mystery player on the field, running sprints under the watchful eyes of two members of the training staff at the start of a drizzly morning practice.

“Who is that guy in the No. 4 jersey?”, I wondered aloud to another Lions writer, who shrugged in confusion as well.

We quickly remembered it was Emmanuel Moseley. The free agent cornerback had been sidelined for the entirety of the offseason to that point, recovering from a torn ACL suffered last October while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. It was easy to forget about Moseley and his presence on the Detroit roster.

The excitement for Moseley getting into the lineup has been a frustrating exercise in patience. There was a setback in rehabilitation from the original surgery that required another procedure. Then there was a hamstring issue that has continued to keep Moseley out of practice for the first three weeks, just after the Lions opted to activate him from the PUP list and onto the 53-man roster.

Moseley has been listed as a limited participant in the two practices this week. With it being a short work week for a Thursday night game, those were more walkthroughs and installs than actual practices. But it’s a sign that Moseley could return soon, perhaps as early as the Week 5 matchup with the Carolina Panthers.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed Moseley’s pending return and how the team will work him into the lineup.

“I think, more than anything, it will probably be by series,” Campbell said. “Certainly give him a couple in a row where he gets a good feel and I think most of it will be we’ll put a governor on his reps, so that we’ll be smart about that as he comes back. Then, really from there, it’s how does he feel? What’s his body saying? Then it’s just about getting in conditioning, like the rest of the guys have done over time.”

Moseley will have to earn the starting job from Jerry Jacobs, who has started the first three games. Jacobs has been frequently targeted, and he’s also struggled with penalties (three pass interference calls) and missed tackles (four, the most of any CB in the league through three weeks).

Despite Jacobs’ early struggles, Campbell won’t just give Moseley the gig.

“Certainly, we’ll see where that goes,” Campbell said of getting Moseley into the lineup. “The good news is if it’s not quite there yet then we still have Jerry, and we’ll battle it out. We’re fortunate to have both those guys.”

It finally looks like the Lions will have some real depth at cornerback with Moseley’s pending return. Keep in mind that Moseley has gone through exactly two full practices in a year, however. As Campbell smartly noted, easing him back in should reflect the fan expectations for Moseley in the next couple of weeks once he does make it back onto the field.

Lions injury update: Taylor Decker, Kerby Joseph among those returning to limited practice

The Lions 1st injury report of Week 4 saw several players return to practice on a limited basis, along with a couple of new injuries

The short week between Week 3 and Week 4 forces the Detroit Lions into an accelerated practice schedule. What is typically Wednesday on a normal week gets pushed to Monday, and that includes the Lions’ first practice participation report of the week.

For being released on the day after a game, it’s an upbeat practice injury report. Only three players were held out of the walkthrough session. They’re all offensive linemen:

  • OT Matt Nelson
  • OG Halapoulivaati Vaitai
  • OC Frank Ragnow

Nelson suffered a knee injury in the win over the Falcons, while Vaitai injured his knee in the Week 2 loss to the Seahawks. Ragnow was given a veteran rest day, as is typical for the Pro Bowl center.

There are a few Lions who missed Sunday’s game but were able to earn limited practice status. Foremost of that group is OT Taylor Decker, who has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. Decker was joined on the limited participant list by some other important names:

  • S Kerby Joseph (hip)
  • RB David Montgomery (thigh)
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley (knee/hamstring)

There were also some new injuries amongst the limited participant grouping:

  • FB Jason Cabinda (knee)
  • OG Jonah Jackson (thigh)

Detroit will make the game status declarations on Wednesday and then travel to Green Bay for Thursday night’s NFC North showdown with the Packers.

Lions injury update: Amon-Ra St. Brown returns to practice

Wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown returned to Detroit Lions practice as a limited participant, while several other starters remain out

There was only one change from Wednesday to Thursday on the Detroit Lions injury report, but it’s an important one. And for once, it’s a positive update.

Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown returned to practice on Thursday after being held out of Wednesday’s session. St. Brown is dealing with a toe injury suffered in Sunday’s home loss to the Seahawks. The team’s top wideout was still listed as limited, but it’s a step in the right direction for St. Brown playing on Sunday against the visiting Atlanta Falcons.

All the other players who missed practice on Wednesday with injuries remained out:

LT Taylor Decker

S Kerby Joseph

CB Emmanuel Moseley

RB David Montgomery

RG Halapoulivaati Vaitai

Wideout Josh Reynolds remained a limited participant with a groin issue. Center Frank Ragnow took his customary day of veteran rest.

In addition, rookie WR Amtoine Green was no longer listed in the NFL concussion protocol.

Lions injury report: 6 starters sit out with injuries

Lions injury report: 6 starters sit out Wednesday’s practice session with injuries

The first official practice participation report from the Detroit Lions for Week 3 offers a discouraging look at the banged-up team. Six players who would be projected starters when healthy sat out with injuries, including two offensive line stalwarts.

Left tackle Taylor Decker (ankle) and right guard Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee) both sat out. Decker missed the Week 2 matchup with the Seahawks, a game where Vaitai exited after suffering a scary-looking injury.

Running back David Montgomery (thigh) and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (toe) also missed practice. Both suffered their injuries in the loss to Seattle.

On the defensive side of the ball, safety Kerby Joseph (hip) is another victim of the physical affair in Ford Field last Sunday. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley continues to be sidelined with a knee and a hamstring, injuries that have prevented him from all but two practice sessions since joining the team.

In addition to the players held out, starting wideout Josh Reynolds was limited with a groin injury. Fellow wideout Antoine Green worked out under the NFL’s concussion protocol. Barring any setbacks, Green could be cleared as early as Thursday.

Finally, center Frank Ragnow was a full participant with his toe injury. Expect Ragnow to have a veteran rest day on Thursday.

Lions inactive players for Week 2 include two DTs

Lions inactive players for Week 2 include DTs Isaiah Buggs and Brodric Martin vss. the Seahawks

Lions fans will have to wait a little longer before seeing the Detroit debut of third-round pick, Brodric Martin. The defensive tackle is one of five Lions who are inactive for the Week 2 matchup in Ford Field with the Seattle Seahawks.

Martin and Isaiah Buggs, who was projected to be the starting nose tackle for most of the offseason, are both inactive. The beefy duo was also inactive in the Week 1 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

With left tackle Taylor Decker and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley already ruled out with injuries, there was only one other player who needed to be inactive. The Lions coaching staff chose undrafted rookie CB Steven Gilmore.

Defensive lineman Josh Paschal and cornerback Khalil Dorsey were placed on I.R. on Saturday, so they are not inactive declarations for Sunday’s game.

Taylor Decker misses another practice

Decker’s status for Sunday’s matchup with Seattle will be determined on Friday

Thursday’s version of the Detroit Lions official practice participation report looks the same as the Wednesday edition. Three players remain sidelined with injury and did not practice at all.

The key name is left tackle Taylor Decker. Not only was Decker idle once again as he deals with an ankle injury, but he was not anywhere to be seen during the portion of practice open to the media.

The other two sitting out, cornerbacks Emmanuel Moseley and Khalil Dorsey, were spotted on the side with the training staff. Moseley missed another day with a hamstring injury in addition to his recovery from knee surgery, while Dorsey is still out with an unspecified illness.

The Lions’ Week 2 foe, the Seattle Seahawks, will play on Sunday without both regular starting offensive tackles.without both regular starting offensive tackles.

Lions injury update: Taylor Decker sits out, Emmanuel Moseley’s timeline takes another hit

Decker continues to sit out with his ankle, while Moseley developed another issue that kept him out on Wednesday

The Detroit Lions held a walk-through practice session on Wednesday, one that was closed to the media. The team did produce an injury report based on likely availability, and a couple of developments on the team’s update are not positive.

Foremost is the ankle injury that is plaguing starting left tackle Taylor Decker. After missing Tuesday’s practice, Decker was also listed as out for Wednesday. Decker played through the injury in Week 1 and played well, but we’ve not seen the veteran leader since he left Kansas City in a walking boot.

Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley was also listed as “did not participate” which is somewhat expected as he attempts to return from two knee surgeries in the last 11 months. But it’s why Moseley was listed out for Wednesday’s session that raises a flag.

Instead of it being the knee as the reason, Moseley was also listed with a heretofore unknown hamstring issue. It’s a setback for Moseley, who still has not practiced with the team since signing as a free agent this offseason.

The good news for the Lions is that the only other player who did not participate was CB Khalil Dorsey, who was listed as out with an illness.

The final injury report with game availability status comes out after Friday’s practice session.

Lions Week 1 injury report: Emmanuel Moseley out vs. the Chiefs

Moseley is the only Lions player who carries any injury designation into Thursday’s game against the Chiefs

The Detroit Lions are in relatively good health entering the Week 1 matchup in Kansas City with the Chiefs. Only one player, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, has been ruled out of the game for injury purposes.

The good news for Detroit is that Moseley is the only player who winds up carrying any game designation at all into Thursday’s opener. Center Frank Ragnow, who sat out Tuesday’s practice for veteran rest, will play with no injury status. DT Isaiah Buggs and S Ifeatu Melifonwu are also medically in the clear to play. Buggs will be inactive due to a coach’s decision, and Melifonwu might also be a healthy scratch.

It’s not a surprise that Moseley isn’t ready for game action yet. The veteran cornerback is coming off two knee surgeries and was only activated from the PUP list last week.
