Lions Week 1 injury report: Emmanuel Moseley out vs. the Chiefs

Moseley is the only Lions player who carries any injury designation into Thursday’s game against the Chiefs

The Detroit Lions are in relatively good health entering the Week 1 matchup in Kansas City with the Chiefs. Only one player, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, has been ruled out of the game for injury purposes.

The good news for Detroit is that Moseley is the only player who winds up carrying any game designation at all into Thursday’s opener. Center Frank Ragnow, who sat out Tuesday’s practice for veteran rest, will play with no injury status. DT Isaiah Buggs and S Ifeatu Melifonwu are also medically in the clear to play. Buggs will be inactive due to a coach’s decision, and Melifonwu might also be a healthy scratch.

It’s not a surprise that Moseley isn’t ready for game action yet. The veteran cornerback is coming off two knee surgeries and was only activated from the PUP list last week.

Detroit Lions injury report heading into Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs

The Lions are pretty healthy heading into Thursday’s opener, based on the first practice participation report of the regular season

We’ve officially entered week one of the NFL season and it’s time to find out if the Detroit Lions are the real deal or not. Sure enough for the Lions, it could be the toughest opponent on their schedule with the Kansas City Chiefs.

As we know, the defending Super Bowl champions will be an uphill battle. Fortunately for Detroit, they’ve compiled one of their best rosters in recent memory. All offseason, they’ve gotten better. At every position group, they’re better.

On paper, it all looks good. We’ll see what kind of results happen against the Chiefs on Thursday night. While it might be Labor Day, the Detroit Lions went to work with their first practice of the week as they prepare for Thursday.

With practice during a game week, it’s always worth monitoring the injury report. For the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s noteworthy that their best defensive player, Chris Jones, has been holding out for a new contract. With no end insight for that contract, it seems unlikely for Jones to play for the Chiefs on Thursday.

As for Detroit, here’s how their injury report stacked up for their Monday practice in week one of the 2023 season:

  • CB Emmanuel Moseley — Knee — Limited Participant
  • DT Isaiah Buggs — Illness — Full Participant
  • DB Ifeatu Melifonwu — Hamstring — Full Participant
  • OC Frank Ragnow — Toe — Full Participant

With Moseley, we’ve all expected him to be limited to start the season. As he recovers from a torn ACL, it’s unlikely that he will play in Week 1 and also maybe Week 2 for the start of this season. However, it’s not on the PUP list so that’s always a good sign.

As for Buggs, he has been benched for this game due to him missing voluntary mini-camps. While he’s battled an illness, it’s promising that he’s back on the field for practice right now.

Lastly, Melifonwu and Ragnow were “full-go” for Monday’s practice. The hamstring for Melifonwu as he spent his rookie season on IR with a thigh injury. With Ragnow, this toe injury could haunt him for the rest of his career. He’s battled through it over the last year or so but it could be a weekly thing to monitor with him at this point.

All in all, the Lions look healthy and we can only hope that they’re ready for their opening tilt against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Presenting the Detroit Lions initial 53-man roster for 2023

Here is the initial 53-man roster for the Detroit Lions in 2023

It wasn’t an easy process, but the Detroit Lions have whittled the preseason 90-man roster down to 53. The cutdowns began over the weekend and were finalized at Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline.

The 53-man roster will change quickly, of course. The 6-game suspension for WR Jameson Williams, which takes effect after the deadline transactions are processed, ensures that the team will add at least one player not currently on the roster (be it a player the Lions cut or an outsider) to replace him. But for now, we know pretty closely what the Lions roster will look like when Dan Campbell’s Detroit team heads to Kansas City to kick off the 2023 regular season on September 7th.

Here is the initial 53-man roster for the Detroit Lions in 2023:

Lions to activate CB Emmanuel Moseley from the PUP list prior to roster cutdown

Moseley will be on Detroit’s 53-man roster and eligible to play in Week 1

One of the biggest unknowns surrounding the Detroit Lions roster construction has been resolved. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions are activating cornerback Emmanuel Moseley from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list ahead of the roster cutdown deadline.

The move means Moseley, signed this offseason as a free agent from the San Francisco 49ers, will be available to play in Week 1.

Moseley has not practiced with the team. He tore his left ACL last October and had surgery, then needed a second procedure just before training camp began in late July. Moseley appeared in his No. 4 jersey for the first time all summer at the Lions’ practice last Wednesday, running and working to the side with trainers.

It’s unclear just how quickly Moseley will get inserted into the lineup, as he’s yet to have a single practice with the team and hasn’t experienced full-speed action or contact in almost a year. But it’s a great boon to get back the man projected to be one of the starting outside CBs.

Emmanuel Moseley takes an important step towards getting on the field for the Lions

Moseley took an important step in finally getting onto the field for the Lions at Wednesday’s practice as he recovers from left knee surgeries

One of the first things we do when we walk onto the practice field area at the Detroit Lions training facility is to look for which players are absent from the session. On Wednesday, I noticed someone in an unfamiliar number running at the end of one of the two practice fields.

It took me a quick minute to realize that the player working out in the No. 4 Lions jersey was cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. It was the first time since the veteran signed with Detroit early this offseason that we’ve seen Moseley in his actual jersey.

Moseley remains on the Lions’ PUP list and didn’t practice. Under the watchful eyes of trainers and team special assistant Chris Spielman, Moseley did the most extensive running and movement drills we’ve seen to this point.

The cornerback did not have his left knee in a heavy brace or tight neoprene wrap as he went through the series of runs and steps. Considering he had been wearing the wrap even while wearing street clothes in recent practices, that has to be considered progress. He’s recovering from a second knee procedure since tearing his left ACL last October while playing for the San Francisco 49ers.

There still isn’t a timetable for a return. Even off the record, one of the trainers refused to comment or speculate about Moseley. Beyond coach Dan Campbell’s recent “it’s going to be a while” comment, we have not seen or heard anything prior to Wednesday that gives an indication of Moseley’s level of progress.

Emmanuel Moseley injury update: ‘It’s going to be a while’

Lions head coach Dan Campbell updated CB Emmanuel Moseley’s progress in returning from knee surgeries

Emmanuel Moseley remains sidelined from Detroit Lions practices. Head coach Dan Campbell didn’t offer any reason to believe the projectee starting cornerback will be ready for Week 1.

In his press conference before Monday’s practice, Campbell said of Moseley,

“It’s going to be a while.”

Moseley is recovering from a second knee surgery since tearing his ACL last October while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Signed as a free agent this spring, Moseley remains on the Lions’ PUP list.

The 27-year-old was ahead of schedule early on, but Moseley suffered a setback that required an additional minor surgery. He is at practices but not participating or even doing light running on the side with trainers, as most players who are close to returning often do.

Campbell did not provide a timetable. Last week, Moseley offered some optimism that he would be ready for Week 1, but those hopes seem fleeting after Campbell’s latest update.

Lions training camp notebook for August 5th: Situational game practice

News and notes from Detroit Lions practice on Aug. 5th from Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon

An enthusiastic capacity crowd at the team’s training facility in Allen Park watched the Detroit Lions plow through another day of camp practice.

The session started in full pads before the players shed them for a more focused play/scheme install for the second half of the practice. Fans got to see some individual matchup drills before a lengthy team session focused on installing some sets and plays.

Here’s what I observed in the Lions’ 11th training camp practice of the 2023 offseason.

Lions sign two new TEs in a slew of roster moves

The Detroit Lions sign TE Darrell Daniels and TE Daniel Helm among several roster moves on Wednesday morning

It was a busy Wednesday morning in Allen Park for Detroit Lions training camp. The Lions announced several roster moves to begin the day before the morning’s practice session.

The team signed not one, but two new tight ends. Free agents Darrell Daniels and Daniel Helm have joined the team. Both are veterans with multiple years of NFL experience. Daniels was the primary blocking tight end for the Arizona Cardinals in 2020-2021 amongst his experience, while Helm has spent time playing with the Raiders and 49ers, primarily on special teams. Helm also stood out in the USFL.

The newcomers will try to fill the void of the Lions losing TE Shane Zylstra, who was waived/injured after suffering a nasty leg injury in Monday’s practice. The team also waived tight end Derrick Deese Jr.

In addition to the action at tight end, the Lions also moved cornerback Emmanuel Moseley to the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Moseley has missed all of the training camp on the PUP list with a knee injury that is related to his ACL surgery last fall. Moseley’s move to the active PUP list means the Lions can keep him idled through the first six weeks of the season. Had he remained on the reserve/PUP list, he would have missed the entire 2023 season.

New Lions CB Emmanuel Moseley still not practicing

New Lions CB Emmanuel Moseley remains out with his knee injury suffered last season

Earlier in training camp, Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the status of one of the team’s prominent free agent signings. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley began training camp on the non-football injury list as he recovers from a torn ACL suffered while a member of the San Francisco 49ers last year.

Campbell indicated that Moseley was excused and expected to arrive Monday. However, Monday’s practice came and went without any sign of Moseley. At the time of his earlier status update, Campbell refused to answer a follow-up question about if Moseley had indeed undergone a second procedure, as has been reported.

During Monday’s practice, a team source did indicate that Moseley was still due to arrive in Allen Park before the end of the day. As for his knee status or practice potential when the Lions retake the field on Wednesday after a scheduled day off on Tuesday, there was an organizational “no comment” even off the record.

It’s becoming a little concerning. Moseley was at June’s minicamp but his knee was heavily wrapped. At that time, Moseley appeared well behind Lions rookie QB Hendon Hooker in his mobility and range of motion despite having the ACL surgery some nine weeks before Hooker.

Signed to a one-year deal this offseason, Moseley has a lengthy list of injuries. He’s played more than 12 games just once (2019) in his five NFL seasons, all with the 49ers. The injury history includes missing the first two games of the 2021 campaign with an unrelated knee issue.

Prior to practice, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn noted that Moseley has been actively participating in team meetings via Zoom.

Lions camp notebook: July ends with a defensive bang

The Detroit Lions training camp notebook from July 31st features some great defense, hot tempers and an unfortunate injury

Monday morning marked the third padded practice of Detroit Lions training camp. After a light day on Sunday, everything amped up for the Monday session.

Spirits were high and tempers short on a sun-soaked morning with the bleachers packed full of fans. Those in attendance got to see some impressive defensive performances, a handful of scuffles and even a bad-looking injury.

Here’s the notebook from the Lions practice on the final day of July.
