On ‘gun celebrations’ and the world we want to live in

New York #Jets WR Allen Lazard and South Carolina #Gamecocks DL Dylan Stewart sparked a dialogue about ‘gun celebrations’ in football.

Football is anything but a leisure sport. Violence is at its absolute core.

For some players, football is an outlet. It isn’t uncommon to hear from retired linemen about how they miss the physicality of the game, the feeling of being able to impose their will on other human beings on the gridiron.

None of this is new, and the urge to physically restrain or otherwise hinder the forward progress of another person is hardly unique to American football.

We humans fight wars, after all, and unspeakable acts are committed by people every day.

On Saturday, South Carolina Gamecocks defender Dylan Stewart was flagged for a celebration wherein he pantomimed shooting Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Jaxon Dart, who was lying defenseless on the field.

Stewart’s incident occurred after New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard was penalized and fined for a finger-gun celebration in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos.

In a vacuum, maybe this is acceptable – or at least understandable – behavior.

Perhaps Stewart, who is 19 years old, just got caught up in the moment and was emulating behavior he had seen from other people who were caught up in a moment, too.

Perhaps Lazard, nearly a decade Stewart’s senior, was merely intending to signal a first down, and his outstretched fingers and hand motions were perceived the wrong way by the referee on the field and the NFL officials who fined him.

And, perhaps nobody was hurt by either celebration, and neither deserved to be penalized for their actions.

As a football blogger, it isn’t my place to say where the line between celebration and offensive conduct is. Far be it from me to say that someone should be suspended, or fined, or even that they should get a stern talking-to from a coach on the sideline.

Those decisions are well above my pay grade.

But, as an American, it seems at least a little odd that there is a conversation to be had about this “gun celebration” business anyway.

Guns, their use, and our right to own them, are wholly pervasive in our culture. Our right to own them, in particular, is enshrined in our constitution, which was written by people with far more vision than me.

To be clear, Stewart’s infraction against Ole Miss was far more egregious than Lazard’s. To mimic “emptying the clip” into an opponent is a far more demonstrative action than merely “shooting” finger guns to indicate a first down.

But, at their core, these celebrations serve a similar purpose: to introduce “guns” into a game that, even to its detriment at times, is more than violent enough.

I’m not here to tell you what to think about either celebration, let alone what you should think about guns, firearm culture, or our right in the United States to bear arms.

Rather, I think the fascination with violence (or perceived violence) as a form of celebration is more at issue.

Is it ever appropriate to celebrate an achievement with a real firearm?

Is it ever appropriate to celebrate an achievement with a fake firearm?

What message does it send that, in a moment of ecstasy after making a crucial play, that any celebration would involve an imaginary firearm?

In my usual role over at Chiefs Wire, I covered Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVIII parade, where one person was killed and 33 people were injured after a mass shooting took place at Union Station in my hometown.

A day that should have been about celebration and achievement turned disastrous and deadly when real guns were introduced into the equation.

In a country where tens of thousands of people die at the end of a gun’s barrel (the majority self-inflicted) every year, why is it that these tools are part of any celebration at all, ever?

These are questions that, again, go well beyond my pay grade.

America’s identity is already at the center of every political advertisement you’ll see over the next month and, in an election year, the last thing this writer wants to do is ask people to re-evaluate their stance on guns.

But, as Americans, we have a choice to let this aspect of our culture live or die.

Top ten 2024 recruit Dylan Stewart commits to South Carolina

South Carolina won a massive recruiting prize on Tuesday morning.

Here’s how Friendship Collegiate Academy (D.C.) five-star edge Dylan Stewart announced he was committed to South Carolina on Tuesday morning, amounting to the biggest recruitment in weeks for the 2024 cycle.

Stewart (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) is ranked first overall in Washington D.C., second at his position and No. 10 nationally in the class of 2024 going by the 247Sports composite rankings.

Needless to say, it’s a significant recruiting victory for the Gamecocks, as Stewart would have been a gem for any program. He had offers from 34 other schools, including Miami, Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas and USC.

Adding Stewart to their class of 2024 has resulted in a significant jump in South Carolina’s national ranking. They went into this week at No. 24 in the country, and now they’re at No. 16.

Social media reactions to Ohio State missing out on 5-star Dylan Stewart

Not great, Bob #GoBucks

The 2024 [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] football class was supposed to bring in multiple high-level defensive ends after missing out on their top targets in the 2023 cycle.

Once again, that has not happened as on Tuesday, the Buckeyes missed out on yet another top target, this time Washington, D.C. defensive end [autotag]Dylan Stewart[/autotag], who choose South Carolina over Ohio State.

It’s another bad look for defensive line coach [autotag]Larry Johnson[/autotag], who, although has a 5-star commit in Justin Scott, has missed out on many of his top targets at edge rusher. Let’s take a look at some of the X, the website formerly known as Twitter, reactions to Ohio State missing out on Stewart.

Five-star defensive lineman chooses South Carolina over Ohio State

This was trending away and now it’s official. #GoBucks

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag in recruiting news for the Ohio State football program. That seems to be the nature of the beast in the world of big-time grocery shopping. The Buckeyes got some great news on 4-star cornerback Aaron Scott on Sunday but just received some not-so-great news about 5-star defensive end Dylan Stewart, who many had pegged to be a Buckeye before the trend started going toward another school.

On Tuesday, Stewart made it official by picking the South Carolina Gamecocks over Ohio State, Miami, Alabama, Georgia, and others. The writing seemed to be on the wall after the Buckeyes and Gamecocks appeared to be the two leaders prior to things turning towards the Palmetto State, so this doesn’t come as much of a shock.

At 6-foot, 5-inches, and 235-pounds, Stewart is ranked as the No. 2 edge rusher and tenth prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Ohio State still has Justin Scott in the class and would love to add another one or two defensive linemen to the class before it’s all said and done.

South Carolina feels ‘really good’ about getting 5-star edge Dylan Stewart

As for the next-best edge recruit in this cycle, two other programs appear to be the frontrunners.

Defensive linemen are all the rage right now in the 2024 recruiting race. The battle to land the No. 1 ranked edge prospect in the class – Duncanville’s Colin Simmons – appears to be a two-team race between Texas and LSU. As for the next-best edge recruit in this cycle, two other programs are the frontrunners.

After Simmons, Friendship Collegiate Academy (D.C.) five-star edge Dylan Stewart is No. 2 at his position, going by the 247Sports composite rankings.

Stewart has offers from 35 programs so far. Right now, On3’s prediction model has Ohio State as the favorite to get his commitment at 51.6%. However, South Carolina (31.2%) feels really good about their chances to get him, per Adam Friedman at Rivals.

“Ohio State has reason to be confident but they aren’t running away in this race. The Gamecocks “feel really good” about their chances with Stewart, according to a source. South Carolina is the main opposition for the Buckeyes in their pursuit of Stewart and they aren’t going to stop recruiting him even if he announces a commitment to Ohio State.”

In addition to being second at his position, Stewart (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) is ranked the No. 1 overall player in Washington, D.C. and No. 9 in the nation.

Who is next at defensive end for Ohio State in the 2024 recruiting cycle?

Which top defensive end target do you think lands in Columbus? #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] missed on one of its main defensive end targets when Illinois prospect Marquise Lightfoot committed to Miami (Florida).

Many, including myself, thought the 6-foot, 5-inch, 220-pound edge rusher would end up in Columbus. It was a recruiting loss for sure, especially since the coaching staff really put significant resources into getting Lightfoot’s attention.

The good news is the spot he would have taken frees up for another high-level prospect. Find out who the Buckeyes are still actively recruiting at the position and my guess as to how likely each will end up in Columbus on a scale of 1 to 5. (All rankings are from the 247Sports composite.)

2024 5-star edge rusher Dylan Stewart crystal balled to Ohio State

Is another big-time prospect close to committing? #GoBucks

Sunday was a big day for Ohio State football recruiting: It landed a commitment from five-star defensive tackle Justin Scott.

Scott is the top-ranked player in Illinois and the No. 14 overall player on the 247Sports composite. This a massive addition for the Buckeyes’ 2024 class, especially considering Michigan was also heavily in the mix to land Scott. (neener, neener)

Larry Johnson sealed the deal to make Scott a Buckeye commit, and it appears Ohio State is in the lead to land five-star edge rusher Dylan Stewart.

Stewart, who attends Friendship Collegiate Academy in Washington D.C., was given crystal balls to the Buckeyes by three 247Sports site experts on Sunday. This includes director of football recruiting Steve Wiltfong, national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn and Ohio State insider Bill Kurelic.

Nothing is a done deal, but Ohio State is in a good position to add another highly touted defensive lineman to its 2024 class that is ranked second in the nation behind Georgia by 247sports.

Washington, D.C. 5-star defensive end has Ohio State in top five

If the Bucks land him, it’d be a massive recruiting win #GoBucks

After hosting Washington, D.C. defensive end [autotag]Dylan Stewart[/autotag] on an official visit a few weeks ago, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] made a very positive impression on the 5-star.

It was enough for Stewart to include the Buckeyes in the final five schools that he will be considering along with Miami, South Carolina, Georgia and Maryland.

The 6-foot, 5-inch and 235 pound elite prospect is rated as the 2nd edge defender and 9th overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle by the 247Sports composite rankings.

Stewart in among the eleven players that would we looked at yesterday that could round out the Ohio State class and he’d be an absolute massive recruiting win.

He is visiting South Carolina this weekend and you’d have to expect a commitment date is on the horizon. Hopefully, he bleeds Scarlet and Gray like all of us.

Miami just hosted several 5-star recruits in one weekend

Miami had a massive recruiting weekend with visits from elite players like Ellis Robinson, Colin Simmons, David Stone and Dylan Stewart.

Miami just had what will almost certainly go down as its biggest football recruiting weekend of the 2024 cycle — the Hurricanes hosted at least 10 recruits, including four five-star prospects, as it tried to wow potential members of its program.

Elite high school football prospects from across the country, including five-star edge Colin Simmons, five-star cornerback Ellis Robinson IV, five-star edge Dylan Stewart, five-star defensive lineman David Stone, four-star defensive lineman Aydin Breland and four-star running back Jerrick Gibson, ventured to Miami to get an in-person look the program head coach Mario Cristobal has put together over his first year-plus with the team.

Here’s a look at which players were on campus and what they said. All rankings are based on the 247Sports Composite.

Five-star 2024 defensive end will officially visit Ohio State

A huge visit in June for the Buckeyes #GoBucks

The search for an elite defensive end is one of [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s top priorities for the 2024 recruiting class.

One of the those prospects, Washington, D.C.’s [autotag]Dylan Stewart[/autotag] is strongly considering the Buckeyes. The 6-foot, 5-inch and 235-pound edge rusher is one of the top prospects in the country, ranking No. 2 at his position and No. 10 overall on the 247Sports composite.

Stewart visited Columbus in March, and that trip really opened his eyes. It was enough for him to plan an official visit on June 16. He will make his way through all his top contenders during the month, and it will go a long way in determining s with his decision on where to play.

In the 2024 recruiting class, Ohio State does not yet have a commitment from a defensive end and if they land Stewart, it would be a huge recruiting win.
