One Georgia player makes list of SEC’s instant impact freshmen for 2024

Ellis Robinson IV listed as impact freshman for 2024…

Georgia football will likely feature some true freshman in the secondary this fall after the departures of starters Javon Bullard, Tykee Smith and Kamari Lassiter.

At cornerback, early enrollee Ellis Robinson IV may have the most upside. The former five-star recruit signed with the Bulldogs as the highest-rated player at the position in the Kirby Smart era.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Sporting News recently attempted to list the SEC’s impact freshmen. Robinson was mentioned for the Bulldogs.

“Georgia lost multiple key contributors this offseason in the secondary, including All-American Tykee Smith. The Bulldogs have done an excellent job developing talent in the secondary, which makes Ellis Robinson IV the perfect candidate for an instant-impact freshman.

Robinson was a consensus five-star prospect and No. 1 cornerback in the class of 2024. He was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Football Club Defensive Player of the Year and started 19 games at cornerback over the past two seasons. He has the size that head coach Kirby Smart loves at cornerback, which should earn him plenty of playing time for the Bulldogs this season.”

It’s easy to get ahead of ourselves when it comes to highlighting young players that may make a big impact. While Robinson has all the talent to be a star, Smart isn’t one to throw players into the lineup without them proving themselves on the practice field.

We’ll get our first real look of Robinson in a Georgia uniform at UGA’s annual G-Day scrimmage game on April 13. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET (SEC Network+).

Oklahoma among teams with the most players in 247Sports Top247

Oklahoma put together a great recruiting class in 2024, finishing among the teams with the most Top247 signees in the country.

The Oklahoma Sooners put together arguably their best class of the [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] era in 2024. It wasn’t ranked higher than the 2023 class, but because of the defensive talent it is bringing in, it makes a strong argument for the top spot.

A great way to show the strength of a class is to look at how many blue-chip prospects a team signed. Blue-chip prospects are defined as four- and five-star prospects. To show how important that is, according to the blue-chip ratio, programs need to sign more four- and five-star recruits than two- and three-star players over the previous four recruiting classes (better than a 1:1 ratio) to have a shot at a title.

To go further, three of the four College Football Playoff teams this past season met the blue-chip ratio criteria heading into the season, including the eventual national champion. Every national champion has met the blue-chip ratio criteria dating to the tool’s inception in 2013. So, how did Oklahoma fare compared to other teams in the 2024 class? Turns out, quite well.

The Sooners were among the top 10 teams that signed the most prospects from the 247Sports Top247 player rankings.

What 5-star defensive back did ESPN’s Tom Luginbill compare to Sauce Gardner and Minkah Fitzpatrick?

Ellis Robinson IV gets some big NFL comparisons from ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill.

Georgia football commit and signee Ellis Robinson IV has the potential to be an elite player, with ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill making some pretty strong projections for the class of 2024 defensive back.

Robinson is a five-star player who participated in last week’s Under Armour All-America Game. ESPN ranks him as the top recruit in the nation in the 2024 class.

He had an offer list that included Florida State, Kentucky and Miami among others.

Luginbill was the analyst for last week’s Under Armour All-America game on ESPN. After watching Robinson in practice, he was impressed with the defensive back, who signed with Georgia during the early signing period in December.

“If I were to just tell you from a physical attributes standpoint, he’s as good of a pure cover corner prospect that we’ve had in this game over the last 17 years now,” Luginbill told USA TODAY High School Sports.

“I think what makes him a bit unique is he’s every bit as good a tackler and run supporter- it’s not all about the pass breakup, interceptions and recovery. He’s a complete package. So we’ve been very excited to see that he has been as advertised.”

Robinson played his last year of high school football for IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida). IMG finished the season fifth in the nation in the USA TODAY HSS Super 25.

As for comparisons, Luginbill likened Robinson to a trio of defensive backs who are currently in the NFL.

“He’s built very, very similar to Sauce – that’s a great comp that I would agree with,” Luginbill said.

“I think Eli Apple when he was at Ohio State, that’s another one? I would say that some of the Alabama guys Dre Kirkpatrick, Minkah Fitzpatrick when he first came to Alabama, he was a corner that got moved into safety. So I think there’s a lot of good comps out there.

“You just don’t find six one-and-a-half, 190-pound corners that are just so fluid and agile and explosive…there’s a lot of guys that look the part and are athletic, but maybe they don’t perform to that level all the time. He performs on par with his skill set.”
