Duncanville head coach Reginald Samples isn’t focused on Texas football three-peat

Duncanville football isn’t focused on titles.

Reginald Samples is not focused on winning another 6A Division I state championship in Texas. That, the high school football head coach said, would be a distraction.

It has been consecutive state championships for Samples and his Duncanville (Duncanville, Texas) program (ranked seventh in the nation in the USA TODAY Sports preseason Super 25 football rankings). Last year’s run to a historic title has Duncanville being talked about as among the best programs in not only Texas, but the nation.

And for Samples, this is potentially dangerous talk. In an interview with Bally Sports, he said the focus can’t be on three-in-a-row.

“It would be historic,” Samples told Bally Sports.

“You look around the state of Texas, a great football state – there’s some great coaches, some great programs. When you start winning three championships, it starts putting you closer to the elite program…but it’s not something I want to think about. Because when you’re thinking about those type of things, you forget about what it takes to get there.”

Duncanville finished last season 14-1. They are led by quarterback Keelon Russell, an Alabama commit who is a five-star recruit and the tenth-ranked player in the nation according to 247Sports.

Did the refs miss an obvious call in DeSoto’s upset of Duncanville?

Did DeSoto get away with a major non-call in their upset win?

On Saturday afternoon, DeSoto upset Duncanville in a game featuring two of the top teams in Texas. But DeSoto looks to have gotten a pretty significant non-call in their 49-35 win.

Duncanville came into the game on a roll and was ranked third in the nation in the USA TODAY Sports Super 25. In the very same poll, DeSoto was No. 12.

In the second quarter and with the ball at their own yard line, DeSoto got a non-call when it appeared that quarterback D.J. Bailey was sacked. On the play, Bailey was hit by a blitzing Duncanville defender.

Bailey’s right forearm appears to go completely down and it appears like his right knee went down as well.

The official, however, let the play go on and Bailey completed a 25-yard pass for a first down. For what it is worth, the official appears on the left side of the play with an un-obstructed view. Curious non-call but this view of the play was certainly better than this highlight clip from social media.

DeSoto went into halftime up 35-21.

Would the call have changed the game? Potentially. DeSoto wouldn’t have gotten the big completion and would have been pinned deep in their own end.

But in a game that DeSoto won by two touchdowns, it is hard to pin one potential non-call from officials for being the sole turning point of the game. The truth is, DeSoto showed up and played with a chip on their shoulder, regardless of what possibly was a missed call from the officials.

And to the actual game itself…Bailey was impressive. A verbal to Sam Houston State, the class of 2024 quarterback was 17-of-23 for 268 yards for four touchdowns.

He looked every bit the part of a Power Five recruit in the weekend win. Sam Houston got a baller.

Texas lands commitment from Duncanville DL Alex January

Alex January becomes Texas’ second commit of the day.

After picking up some steam in late June on the recruiting trail, Texas has started off the month of July with a bang.

The Longhorns nabbed a commitment from four-star wide receiver Parker Livingstone on Saturday, and added to their class with three-star defensive lineman Alex January shortly after.

The Duncanville product announced via Twitter that he is committed to the University of Texas.

Standing at 6-foot-4, 325-pounds, January held nearly 30 offers. He chose Texas over programs such as Florida State, Texas Tech, and LSU. His father, Mike January, played linebacker at Texas back in the 80s.

January is also teammates with five-star EDGE Colin Simmons, who the Longhorns are viewed as the favorites to land. January ranks as the No. 63 player in the country.

Georgia offers 5-star WR Dakorien Moore

The Georgia Bulldogs have extended a scholarship offer to Dakorien Moore, who is the top-ranked wide receiver recruit in the class of 2025.

The Georgia Bulldogs have extended a scholarship to class of 2025 wide receiver Dakorien Moore.

Moore, a five-star prospect, is the top-ranked receiver in the sophomore class. Moore plays high school football for Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas. Duncanville is one of the top high school football programs in the country.

The 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver is the No. 8 recruit in the class of 2025. Moore is the top player in Texas.

The five-star wide receiver also runs track and has excellent speed. Moore has visited Oklahoma and Oregon in recent months.

The Duncanville star has scholarship offers from Penn State, Alabama, LSU, Miami and more elite college football programs.

Can Georgia football flip the narrative that its offense is not great for wide receivers? Georgia has recently seen one of its top receivers transfer in back-to-back offseasons. The Bulldogs recruit tight ends better than pretty much any other program, but that’s not the case at the wide receiver position.

Moore announced his scholarship offer from the Georgia Bulldogs via Twitter:

Ohio State QB commit Quinn Ewers does ‘O-H’ to Alabama signee

Quinn Ewers decided to have some fun with Alabama signee Kendall Blackshire after Southlake Carroll’s upset of Duncanville on Saturday.

Top 2022 quarterback recruit and Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers decided to have a little fun with Alabama signee Kendrick Blackshire after Southlake Carroll’s stunning upset over Duncanville in the Texas 6A semifinals on Saturday.

With the National Championship game between Alabama and Ohio State only 48 hours away at the time, the beef spilled over to the high school football field. Video caught Ewers flashing Ohio State’s famous “O-H” symbol at Blackshire when the two met at midfield postgame.

It goes without saying Ewers’ gesture was done in good nature, as both players shared a smile and a laugh. Ewers got the best of Blackshire and Duncanville in the end, though, throwing for 167 yards and registering two touchdowns in a win over the Panthers.

Blackshire will now begin preparing for his career at Alabama, while Ewers’ focus shifts to Austin Westlake in the Texas 6A championship game this weekend. Who knows, though? Maybe Blackshire and Ewers will meet again in a national championship game of their own down the line.

No. 2 Duncanville dominates in season opener without 2019 National Coach of the Year Reginald Samples

Duncanville dominated its season opener despite not having 2019 USA Today national coach of the year Reginald Samples because of suspension.

Duncanville High School (Texas), ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25, dominated in its season opener on Friday night despite missing a key figure on the sideline.

2019 USA Today national coach of the year Reginald Samples did not coach in the Panthers’ 41-3 win over South Oak Cliff because of a one-game suspension instituted by the University Interscholastic League. According to Greg Riddle of the Dallas Morning News, the UIL’s state executive committee found Duncanville violated the UIL rule regarding the employment of coaches by using a coach on staff that was not a full-time district employee. Assistant head coach and defensive line coach Ramel Borner ran the show in place of Samples.

Under Samples’ guidance, Duncanville has reached consecutive Class 6A Division I championship games and has amassed a 29-2 record the last two seasons (14-1 in 2018, 15-1 in 2019). The Panthers were originally scheduled to open their 2020 season against Fort Worth Nolan last week, but the game was canceled because a Nolan football player tested positive for COVID-19.

Samples will be back on the sideline next week when Duncanville hosts No. 1 IMG Academy in Arlington on Saturday, Oct. 10 after it confirmed it still plans to travel to Texas for the game amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Plenty of talent will be on the field when the two teams take the field next weekend, as IMG Academy features three of the top 64 recruits in the class of 2021. Duncanville offensive lineman is ranked 43rd in the class of 2021 according to 247Sports.

Georgia football offers 2020 three-star CB Ennis Rakeshaw

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to 2020 three-star corner Ennis Rakeshaw.

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to 2020 corner Ennis Rakeshaw. Rakeshaw is a three star cornerback, who played high school football at Duncanville in Texas. Although he is the 168th rated corner in the nation, he is catching the eyes of many coaches throughout the country.

Rakeshaw was excited to receive his offer from Kirby Smart and UGA:

Rakeshaw is drawing recent interest from around the country including: Baylor, Kansas, Missouri, Miami, and Michigan State. Rakeshaw will have several weeks to make his decision.

Rakeshaw faced tough competition playing high school football. Now, he may be headed to the SEC.

2019-20 ALL-USA High School Football Coach of the Year: Reginald Samples, Duncanville

Duncanville football head coach Reginald Samples has been named the 2019 ALL-USA Football Coach of the Year.

USA TODAY High School Sports is naming the ALL-USA Coach of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, First and Second Team Offense and First and Second Team Defense for football.

The team was chosen by the USA TODAY Sports staff in consultation with high school coaches and recruiting analysts.

OFFENSE: First Team | Second Team

OFFENSIVE POY: Bryce Young, Mater Dei

DEFENSE: First Team | Second Team

DEFENSIVE POY: Justin Flowe, Upland

COACH OF THE YEAR: Reginald Samples, Duncanville

COACH PROFILE:

Reginald Samples
School: Duncanville (Texas)

A Hail Mary to end last year’s championship game prevented Duncanville (Texas) from going 15-0 and winning the title.

After that heartbreak, the Panthers have worked through the Texas playoff gauntlet once again. After allowing more than seven points in just one regular season game, they flew threw the playoffs and are one win away from vengeance.

With another dominant season, Reginald Samples has been named the 2019 ALL-USA Football Coach of the Year.

In the 10 regular season games, Duncanville outscored opponents 444-33 — meaning the defense allowed an average of 3.3 points per game.

Through five playoff games, Duncanville has been winning by an average score of about 51-19.

South Grand Prairie, Flower Mound and Martin didn’t stand a chance. Southlake Carroll made it close in the fourth quarter, but Duncanville had control through. Rockwall’s explosive offense was stymied. All that’s left is a rematch of last year’s title game vs. North Shore.

It will be the biggest challenge thus far as quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson will be out due to a torn ACL he suffered in the second quarter of the game vs. Rockwall. That didn’t slow Duncanville down in the semifinals, as the Panthers scored 21 points in the third quarter.

Duncanville has also managed this season without Kendrick Blackshire, the highly-anticipated transfer who was injured in the offseason.

If Samples can lead Duncanville to two consecutive seasons in which perfection was missed by a mere Hail Mary, it will be one of the great Texas football accomplishments.

This season, Samples has a chance to lead the team to its first championship since 1998. Getting to this point for the second straight year has shown how impressive a coach he is.
