Donovan Peoples-Jones: What the Lions are getting in their new wide receiver

Breaking down what the Detroit Lions are trading for in new wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones

Welcome home, Donovan Peoples-Jones!

The Detroit native and former Michigan Wolverine wideout is the newest member of the Lions. The team traded a sixth-round pick in 2025 to the Cleveland Browns for Peoples-Jones ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.

What are the Lions getting in Peoples-Jones?

He’s a familiar name for a lot of fans, of course. A speedy 6-foot-2 wideout from Cass Tech High School, Peoples-Jones has spent his entire NFL career in Cleveland. I covered his first three seasons there for Browns Wire and have watched him closely since Cleveland selected him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

“DPJ,” as he’s known, is a vertical threat of a receiver with excellent straight-line speed. He was a part-time player for the Browns in his first two seasons, rising from 14 catches as a rookie to 34 in his second season. His rookie campaign was spent primarily as Odell Beckham Jr.’s backup.

The 2022 season was his first time getting a chance to start and he blossomed into a useful No. 2 receiver opposite Amari Cooper. He saw more action working his speed out of the slot and it worked well, catching 61 passes for 839 yards and three touchdowns–all career-highs.

Despite playing a lot in 2023, the production has gone down: 8 catches on 18 targets. The Browns have had a revolving door at quarterback and that has hurt Peoples-Jones, who is a wideout who needs trust from his quarterback to play well. The Browns offense has deployed him more on shorter routes and that takes away from his strengths; he’s not a “get-open-quick” kind of player or a shifty route runner.

Drops haven’t been a big issue, though fumbling after the catch (or return) is something that has dogged DPJ going back to Michigan. He’s never been a great runner after the catch aside from being out in space. Peoples-Jones won’t break many tackles and goes down on first contact more than desired. He is a tough blocker who understands his assignments well.

He’s also proven to be an accomplished return man. He only returned kickoffs as a rookie but has maintained his role as a punt returner into 2023. He was one of the NFL’s best in 2022, though he’s not been so effective this year with a 6.5-yard average on 13 returns.

Role in Detroit

This is a move made for depth more than on-field impact. Peoples-Jones figures to be a versatile backup for Josh Reynolds and Jameson Williams who can also play the Kalif Raymond role with more size, if needed. Peoples-Jones checks the boxes of a smart player on and off the field who is competitive and works hard, mandatory qualities for the Lions.

He’s in the final year of his rookie contract, making DPJ a free agent at the end of the season. In that sense, it’s an audition for a potential one-year extension or for coming back as an unrestricted free agent.

Former Michigan football WR Donovan Peoples-Jones coming home

This is amazing! #GoBlue

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Detroit Lions made a move that should make Wolverine-Lions fans happy.

Brad Holmes, who is quickly emerging as one of the league’s top general managers, traded a sixth-round pick for wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones.

“DPJ,” as he was known during his time at Michigan, totaled 2,155 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns during his time with the Wolverines. He played his high school ball at Cass Tech and makes his return to the great state of Michigan for the third time in his career.

The Cleveland Browns selected Peoples-Jones with the 187th pick in the 2020 NFL draft, and he exceeded expectations during his stay in Cleveland. Peoples-Jones totaled 117 receptions for 1,837 yards and eight touchdowns during his tenure with the Browns, including a breakout 839-yard campaign last season. However, with fewer than 100 yards to his name thus far in 2023, it appears Peoples-Jones has been phased out of Cleveland’s plans.

The Lions receiving room is in need of a boost. Besides Amon-Ra St. Brown, the team relies on Josh Reynolds, Kalif Raymond and Jameson Williams to provide a spark. Rough sledding.

Peoples-Jones should slide in as the second WR in the Lions’ offense pretty soon, with the other three taking on specific roles. However, If Williams realizes his potential as a first-round pick, the passing game can click at league-shocking levels.

Hopefully, Peoples-Jones can make his Lions debut next Sunday in some fashion, but it could be two weeks before we see the former Wolverine suit up.

Lions trade for Browns WR Donovan Peoples-Jones

The Lions dealt a 2025 draft pick to Cleveland to bring the Detroit native home

It’s been a pretty quiet run up to the NFL trade deadline for the Detroit Lions, but the team did make an acquisition ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline. The Lions have agreed to a trade with the Cleveland Browns for wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones.

The Lions are sending a sixth-round pick in 2025 to Cleveland for Peoples-Jones. The wideout is a Detroit native and played collegiately at Michigan. He was a sixth-round pick by Cleveland in the 2020 NFL draft.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposes two trades for the Cleveland Browns

Could the Browns bring a running back back to Cleveland for a second stint?

There is still a lot of football to be played but with the trade deadline coming up the Cleveland Browns could look to be buyers. Without Nick Chubb and looking for a spark to the offense the team could look to make a move at running back or wide receiver. However, ly would argue that they should be focusing on upgrading the struggling offensive line, especially at left tackle.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently released an article about some possible trade scenarios two of which included the Browns. His first trade involved Cleveland trading a fifth-round pick to Jacksonville for D’Ernest Johnson and a seventh-round pick.

While Johnson would provide an upgrade at running back trading a fifth-round pick for a third-string running back doesn’t make much sense. And with the way the Browns offensive line is playing an upgrade at running back wouldn’t be enough to spark the run game.

The other trade also doesn’t make much sense as he suggests a straight swap at wide receiver with the Browns sending Donovan Peoples-Jones to the Jets for Mecole Hardman. The passing games offense is struggling because of quarterback play, not the pass catchers so neither of these trades should be done by Cleveland.

Studs and Duds: Grant Delpit shines again in Browns vs. Steelers offensive meltdown

Who stood out for the better and for the worse?

The Cleveland Browns left Pittsburgh Monday night with two major losses. The Browns lost Nick Chubb during the game before losing to the Steelers’ defense in the final minutes. The game felt like an eternity after Nick Chubb suffered a brutal knee injury.

The Browns were battling the Steelers and a plague of injuries. It became obvious in the demeanors of the offensive players that they were looking to survive Monday night. Sadly, they were not able to as Deshaun looked gun-shy, battered, and everything else besides looking like a quarter of a billion-dollar man. The offense looked disjointed with Amari Cooper and Jerome Ford occasionally breathing life into the body without organs.

The defense was able to keep on a brave face and remained steadfast despite the offense’s incompetence. A horrible miscommunication between Denzel Ward and Juan Thornhill allowed for a long George Pickens touchdown. While Ward was pointing at Thornhill to switch to Pickens, my early conclusion is that Ward should’ve locked onto George since the route broke nearly 10 yards downfield.

Unfortunately, miscommunications will occur early in the season. It helps when that’s the only touchdown given up by the defense. With Watson and the offense giving up the other two touchdowns. That buys them some leeway in this week’s studs and duds.
