Georgia Bulldogs junior wide receiver Dominick Blaylock has entered the NCAA transfer portal
Georgia Bulldogs junior wide receiver Dominick Blaylock has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Blaylock played in all 15 of Georgia’s games during the 2022 college football season.
Blaylock, a former four-star recruit out of Walton High School, recorded 15 receptions for 227 yards and a touchdown in 2022. Blaylock ends his career at Georgia as a back-to-back national champion.
Blaylock was a member of the class of 2019. He played a key role for Georgia football as a freshman, but tore an ACL during the 2019 SEC championship. Blaylock fought hard to return in 2020, but suffered another knee injury before the 2020 season.
Blaylock had a career-best 18 receptions for 310 passing yards and five touchdowns back in 2019. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound receiver is likely looking for more playing time at his new home. Blaylock is healthy and is ready for a larger role.
The former Walton standout will have two years of eligibility remaining at his new home.
“Right now, I am feeling a lot more confident. I’m feeling great, so far. The knee is feeling awesome.” – Dom Blaylock
Dominick Blaylock lived up to the hype in 2019 as a freshman out of Marietta’s Walton High School. The former No. 36 overall recruit in the nation, Blaylock recorded 18 catches for 310 yards and his five receiving touchdowns were the second most on the team.
Blaylock suffered a torn ACL in the 2019 SEC Championship Game against LSU, cutting his freshman season short by just one game.
Nine months later, Blaylock was back on the field ready to pick up where he left off. Unfortunately, a second ACL tear would occur in fall practice, forcing Blaylock to miss the entirety of the 2020 season.
“Ever since all the injuries, I’ve been trying to keep a level head,” Blaylock said on Thursday before a spring practice session. “I’m trying to keep moving forward and get back to the best ability I can.”
Blaylock was also bugged by a pulled hamstring last season. He took it easy during Georgia’s 2021 national title run, recording only two receptions for 11 yards, which both came against Charleston Southern in late November. He did, however, find a role on Georgia’s coverage unit on special teams. Smart mentioned that the contact associated with that experience last year helped prepare Blaylock mentally for a bigger role going forward.
Now no longer accompanied by a knee brace and fully practicing with the team for the first time since 2020, he’s back to making an impact for a UGA squad in need of depth at the receiver position.
In a practice session last Thursday, Blaylock got everyone fired up when he reeled in a diving catch during a two-minute drill. He’s also been in the mix as a punt returner, a duty he held during his 2019 freshman season, splitting reps with Kearis Jackson and Ladd McConkey.
“He’s getting better, he’s getting more confidence in that knee,” coach Smart said on Thursday. “More than anything, I’m excited to see him get out there and play because our team takes on a lot of his resilience and DNA.”
Blaylock understandably described the process of rehabbing from a second ACL injury as “rough.” A former five-star recruit with hopes of making it to the NFL, two serious surgeries in the span of one year would be a tough pill to swallow for anyone.
Smart credits Blaylock’s recovery to his resiliency and his background.
“He’s wired the right way,” Smart said. “This kid came up tough. He has two older brothers that helped toughen him up. He didn’t grow up soft.”
As for Blaylock himself, it’s all about regaining confidence in that knee.
“Everything so far has gone good, so I’m just trying to keep a good mindset about everything,” he said.
“Right now, I am feeling a lot more confident. I’m feeling great, so far. The knee is feeling awesome. I am just trying to do the best part I can for my team, and I’m trying to get back where I have been back in freshman year.”
Just days after these comments Blaylock made a huge impact in Georgia’s first spring scrimmage over the weekend. He reportedly recorded multiple touchdown grabs, including a 40+ yard score down the middle of the field.
With Jermaine Burton off to Alabama and Pickens headed to the NFL, Georgia is in need of playmakers at the wide receiver position. There’s AD Mitchell and Ladd McConkey, who had breakout freshman seasons in 2021. There’s also Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and Kearis Jackson. But a healthy Blaylock might just be the best of the bunch.
“So far spring has been going good,” Blaylock said. “I’m getting the feel for everything. It’s the first spring practice since freshman year, so everything is going well, so far. I feel great.”
Georgia’s wide receivers have performed very well despite being depleted at the group due to injuries.
Kirby Smart gave an update on a few of the injured receivers at his press conference on Tuesday.
On Arian Smith (shin):
“Yeah, we are hoping to get Arian (Smith) back. He’s been closer each week. It’s just a lower leg contusion that’s been bothering him when he plants and runs, but he is much closer this week, but he’s been on about a fifty percent pitch count. He’s been repping with the twos, he’s getting reps and I think he’s looked better this week than he has in the past. We hope that continues throughout the rest of the week.
On Jermaine Burton (groin):
“Jermaine (Burton) has been bothered by the groin, he’s fought through that. He’s not 100%.”
On Justin Robinson (hamstring):
“Justin Robinson’s got a little bit of a hamstring now so he’s banged up.”
On Dominick Blaylock (hamstring):
“Dom is still out. So I feel like we are better off than we were going into the Auburn game, but I don’t feel like we are near where we need to be in terms of wide receiver.”
On the group again:
“But I do think Arian will be back and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint has done a great job this week and Jermaine has been out there practicing. Of those three alone, they are a huge boost.”
Multiple Bulldogs, including star QB JT Daniels are dealing with injuries ahead of Georgia’s home opener vs. UAB….
Georgia football is set to take on UAB in the 2021 home opener in Athens on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. but some Bulldogs won’t be taking the field.
UGA has battled injuries throughout fall camp and into the Clemson matchup last Saturday night. The story is no different in week-two, as star quarterback J.T. Daniels is now nursing an upper body injury that may keep him sidelined versus the Blazers.
Early reports suggest an oblique strain or some kind of core injury, although coach Kirby Smart has not yet confirmed. Redshirt freshman Carson Beck received a large number of first-team reps at practice on Tuesday.
The offensive line took a hit this week as starting right guard Tate Ratledge underwent foot surgery and will miss the remainder of the season due to an injury suffered against Clemson.
At receiver, the Bulldogs are still missing star Dominick Blaylock, who is recovering from an ACL tear suffered last year. Smart said Blaylock is close to 100%. Kearis Jackson, the leading pass catcher a year ago, only returned punts against Clemson and is still not fully recovered from knee surgery this summer.
Fellow wideout George Pickens is still rehabbing from an ACL tear suffered in the spring, and LSU transfer Arik Gilbert is still not with the team due to a personal issue.
Tight end Darnell Washington and defensive back Tykee Smith are working their way back from foot surgeries done just a few weeks ago. Smart did say the two were at least moving around, suggesting they should be back at some point this season.
Here’s an updated look at Georgia’s injury report ahead of the matchup with UAB.
Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver George Pickens tore his ACL this offseason and is expected to miss a portion of the upcoming football season
Wide Receiver George Pickens (No. 1):
Class: Junior
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190 lbs
Hometown: Hoover, Alabama
High School: Hoover High School
Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver George Pickens tore his ACL this offseason and is expected to miss a portion of the college football season. Pickens is ranked one of the top returning receivers in the country. He will be eligible for the 2022 NFL draft.
In eight games last season, Pickens hauled in 36 catches for 513 yards and six touchdowns. Though his overall numbers weren’t as big, he averaged one more catch per game (4.5) and more yards per game (12.2) than as a freshman.
Pickens began his career at Georgia with eight touchdowns and 727 receiving yards as a true freshman.
Pickens came to Athens as a highly touted five-star recruit. He saved his best game for last in 2019. Pickens shredded the Baylor Bears for 175 receiving yards on 12 catches (both career highs for Pickens) en route to winning MVP honors at the 2020 Sugar Bowl.
Kirby Smart and Georgia will need other receivers to step up in Pickens’ absence. Jermaine Burton, Darnell Washington, Arian Smith, Adonai Mitchell, Dominick Blaylock and Kearis Jackson will play a larger role in games with Pickens out.
The Bulldog offense looked much better to end the 2021 college football season under quarterback J.T. Daniels.
