Titans promote Mason Kinsey, put Kearis Jackson on IR among 4 moves

Titans WR Mason Kinsey has been promoted to the active roster among 4 moves made Friday.

The Tennessee Titans made a total of four roster moves on the Friday before their Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns.

After suffering an ankle injury at practice during the week, wide receiver Kearis Jackson has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced. Jackson will miss at least the next four games.

Taking his spot on the roster is fellow wide receiver Mason Kinsey, who was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. Chances are Kinsey will handle punt and/or kick return duties while Jackson is out.

Now, a look at the rest of the moves the Titans made on Friday.

Titans’ Craig Aukerman confirms returners, talks Nick Folk kicking off

Titans special teams coach Craig Aukerman discussed who the returners will be for Week 1 and the team’s confidence in Nick Folk on kickoffs.

While the Tennessee Titans confirmed who their punt returner would be for the start of the season on their latest unofficial depth chart, the choice for kick returns remained up in the air.

Wide receiver Kearis Jackson was listed as the starter at punt returner, but the Titans had a slash between Jackson and running backs Tyjae Spears and Julius Chestnut at kick returner, signifying a decision had not been made.

However, when speaking to the media on Thursday, special teams coach Craig Aukerman said Jackson will handle both punt and kick returns, but Spears is also in the mix to bring back kickoffs for the season opener.

One of the topics of conversation when it comes to new Titans kicker Nick Folk was his low touchback percentage last season (9.1 percent), which led many to worry about how effective he’ll be in that area in Tennessee.

But that is not currently a concern for the Titans, as Aukerman revealed Folk will indeed handle kickoff duties in Week 1. He did, however, suggest that Tennessee will evaluate the situation from week to week.

Aukerman also touched on who may serves as gunners, listing wide receivers Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Chris Moore, cornerback Anthony Kendall and safety Matthew Jackson as the top candidates.

Who are the Titans’ returners going into Week 1?

The Titans have yet to officially announce their returners for Week 1 but we have a pretty good idea who they could be.

While the Tennessee Titans have just about every starting spot spoken for ahead of Week 1 this Sunday, both return jobs remain up in the air.

We saw a slew of players try their hand at both jobs during the offseason, but some of those players either aren’t on the team anymore or are on the practice squad. Adding to that, the projected punt returner, wide receiver Kyle Philips, is on injured reserve.

Fellow wide receiver, Kearis Jackson, saw several opportunities in the return game — both punts and kickoffs — in the preseason finale and should be considered the favorite for at least one of those roles.

When asked specifically about punt returner last week, head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t have an answer. I tried my best to find if anyone asked him about kickoff returns, but couldn’t.

Running back Julius Chestnut is listed in the top spot at kickoff returns on the team’s unofficial depth chart, but that has not been updated since final cuts.

Along with Jackson and Chestnut, rookie running back Tyjae Spears, who returned a kickoff in the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears and was mentioned as a candidate by special teams coach Craig Aukerman during the offseason, is likely also in the mix for one of those jobs.

The Titans should be releasing an updated depth chart at some point before the Week 1 game against the New Orleans Saints, so we should know for sure who the returners are ahead of Sunday.

Former Georgia Bulldog, undrafted WR makes Titans’ roster

Kearis Jackson makes the Titan’s roster after going undrafted this spring…

Former Georgia football wide receiver Kearis Jackson made the Tennessee Titans’ official 53-man roster ahead of the 2023 season, per a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Jackson was considered a long shot to land a roster after going undrafted this spring, but his usefulness as a player who can play special teams and both inside and outside receiver positions proved the difference.

Jackson, a two-time national champion at Georgia, also had an impressive preseason for Tennessee. The Fort Valley, Georgia, native caught three passes for 60 yards and a touchdown in limited playing time.

Jackson and the Titans will kick off the 2023 regular season on Sept. 10 in New Orleans versus the Saints.

Titans’ Kearis Jackson, Caleb Murphy to make 53-man roster

Titans WR Kearis Jackson and OLB Caleb Murphy have reportedly made the 53-man roster.

The Tennessee Titans have two more great stories unfolding on their initial 53-man roster, as 2023 undrafted free agents, wide receiver Kearis Jackson and outside linebacker Caleb Murphy, have both reportedly made the cut.

According to multiple reports, Jackson, a Georgia product, and Murphy, a Ferris State product, will be on the roster. This doesn’t come as a total shock, though, as both were tentatively expected to make the cut, and Murphy more so.

Jackson finished the preseason strong with a 26-yard touchdown grab off a pass from Malik Willis. He also got an extended look as a returner in that game, which was a sign Jackson was under serious consideration for that role, thus giving him another avenue to make the team.

Murphy was among Tennessee’s biggest standouts of the preseason after he notched at least one sack in each game, and four in total, which was tied for the league lead.

Even with that performance, there was some doubt about Murphy’s chances of making the cut because of special teams, but thankfully that wasn’t enough for Tennessee to pass on a promising young pass-rusher who more than earned his spot on this team.

What draft experts said about Titans WR Kearis Jackson in scouting reports

A look at what experts had to say about Titans UDFA WR Kearis Jackson in pre-draft scouting reports.

The Tennessee Titans signed a slew of undrafted free agents after the 2023 NFL draft, one of whom was reportedly Georgia wide receiver Kearis Jackson.

However, as rookie minicamp began, Jackson was not listed among the official signings, which led to questions about what happened. While we didn’t get an exact answer, Jackson did eventually sign on Monday.

Wide receiver remains the best avenue for undrafted free agents to crack the Titans’ roster, as the team did nothing to adequately address what is its biggest weakness going into 2023.

While it’s hard to expect anything out of an undrafted free agent, Jackson is among the candidates to possibly make the cut at wide receiver if he can manage to stick through the spring.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what the Titans are getting in the undrafted free agent via scouting reports from experts prior to the 2023 NFL draft.

UGA WR declares for 2023 NFL draft

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Kearis Jackson has made his NFL draft decision

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Kearis Jackson has entered the 2023 NFL draft. Jackson, a senior, still had a year of eligibility remaining despite arriving in Athens as a member of the class of 2018.

Jackson came up with a clutch catch in the Peach Bowl against Ohio State and will end his college football career as a back-to-back national champion.

What was the best part about Jackson’s game? He was a reliable receiver, but most importantly, he could be trusted to return punts and kickoff at a high level.

The 6-foot, 200-pound receiver recorded 21 catches for 320 yards and no touchdowns in his final year as a Dawg. Jackson, who was a selfless player, had a career year in 2020. The former four-star recruit finished with a career-high 36 catches for 514 receiving yards and three touchdowns that season.

Jackson announced his decision to enter the draft via Twitter:
