Broderick Jones to honor Devin Willock with his jersey number

Former Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones was selected at No. 14  in the 2023 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.

Jones revealed to the press on Friday his intention to honor his late UGA teammate, Devin Willock, by wearing No. 77 with the Steelers. Willock tragically passed away in a car accident in Athens, Georgia, on Jan. 15, shortly after the team’s celebration of their second consecutive national championship.

“My roommate from the University of Georgia, he wore 77 — Devin Willock, the one who passed away in a crash,” Jones said on Friday.

“They told me the number was available, and I just wanted to, you know, show my respect by taking that number and letting him live through me.”

Jones, a 2022 All-SEC left tackle is coming off a dominant season for the Bulldogs in which he did not allow a single sack.

Jones, who declared for the NFL after his redshirt sophomore season, was one of the most impressive offensive lineman at the 2023 NFL combine. He clocked a 4.97 40-yard dash at 6-foot-5, 311 pounds, the fastest of any offensive lineman.

Jones will join former teammate and 2022 draft pick George Pickens in Pittsburgh.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman sends love and condolences to Air Force and Georgia

It’s been a tough last few days for the college football committee

Over the last few days, college football has lost some players and a staff member with [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] being well aware of the losses.

[autotag]Air Force[/autotag] offensive lineman [autotag]Hunter Brown[/autotag] passed away after suffering a medical emergency going to a class. [autotag]Georgia[/autotag] offensive lineman [autotag]Devin Willock[/autotag] and support staff member [autotag]Chandler LeCroy[/autotag] were involved in a single-vehicle car crash that saw both of them pass away. Offensive tackle [autotag]Warren McClendon[/autotag] was also in the car but suffered just a cut on his head that required stitches.

It’s been a difficult couple of days across the nation and Freeman made a statement about both programs, sending his love and condolences.

Being part of a collegiate football program is like being in a fraternity, even if you are on a different campus, there is still a connection. It’s great to see Freeman take a leadership role and make a statement. He is showing the country why he was the correct choice to lead the Irish program, on and off the field.

Opposing team’s players, cheerleaders form tunnel for Paramus Catholic’s Devin Willock after his injury

When Paramus (New Jersey) Catholic’s Devin Willock went down with an injury, St. Joseph Regional players and cheerleaders showed their respect.

Penn-State-committed Devin Willock was on the wrong side of a blowout in a playoff game, when he suffered what appeared to be a serious left ankle injury.

When it seemed evident that the senior’s high school football career was coming to an end due to the injury, the opposing team’s players and cheerleaders showed a sign of respect.

As reported by NJ.com, St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, New Jersey) players and cheerleaders formed a makeshift tunnel for Willock, a player on Paramus (New Jersey) Catholic, to pass through on a stretcher and into an ambulance on Saturday.

“We just wanted to really show how much we cared and how bad we felt for him,” St. Joseph Regional lineman Luke Wypler, an Ohio State commit, told NJ.com. “It was a terrible thing that happened and just a part of the game, unfortunately. We wanted to send him off in good spirits.”

Willock has collegiate football on the slate now, but that was his last high school game. St. Joseph Regional went on to win 44-0, and it will play Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, New Jersey) in the next round of the playoffs.

At the time Willock went down with an injury, the game was already well in hand for the opposing team, but St. Joseph’s Amin Vanover, who is also committed to Penn State, has an idea for why Willock stayed in for that long.

“I’m pretty sure he was over there telling his coaches not to take him out,” Vanover told NJ.com. “He didn’t want to come out. He wanted to play until the end, that’s who he is.”
