Pro Bowl pass rusher and pending free agent Josh Allen has an early connection with a member of the Carolina coaching staff.
Unlike their staff on offense, the Carolina Panthers didn’t need to touch their defensive coaches going into 2024. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have connections to a few intriguing free agents.
Here are 14 pending defensive free agents, in areas of need, who have ties to Carolina’s coaching staff:
Though he wouldn’t claim his alma mater during NBC’s customary player announcements, Michigan football fans will always love and claim Devin Bush Jr.
The former Wolverines linebacker was a standout in Ann Arbor, and that’s continued in his tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers, though he was sidelined with an ACL injury in 2020. However, he’s flaunting his ability in 2021-22, and he just did so on the big stage.
Using a little bit of teamwork, former Wisconsin edge rusher T.J. Watt tipped Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ pass, and Bush was right there waiting for it, coming down with a big interception for the Steelers.

The former Michigan football great is making a strong impression entering his second year in the NFL.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a veteran, a rookie or somewhere in between, you can be a standout in fall camp if you take some initiative once you see the practice field.
The second-year inside linebacker has made a multitude of standout plays since pads came on. On a deep pass, Bush kept pace with McFarland down the field, stayed in position, and batted the ball away in the end zone for an incomplete pass. On another rep, Bush made a pass breakup against McFarland deep down the field. The two speedsters have been paired up multiple times in practice this week.
This week, Bush told the media that he worked on his movements to be more efficient at the point of attack. In an 11-on-11 drill, Bush perfectly read a screen play and defeated the blocker to immediately tackle the ball carrier as the pass was caught.
After praising Bush for the shape he came to camp in, Tomlin gave his linebacker a challenge: “I’m looking for that step to be revealed in the quality and the amount of his communication, and he still has room for improvement in that regard.”
Bush had a solid rookie season in the NFL, but still has some work to do to become the bona fide household name he was in Ann Arbor.

The Steelers traded up to get him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and while he had solid production — leading the team in tackles while adding two interceptions — he surprisingly only had one sack in his first season.
However, like he did at Michigan, Bush has showcased his sideline-to-sideline speed nearly every down he’s on the field.

Though some people on a national level (very, very, very few) didn’t think Devin Bush was going to amount to much at the pro-level, Michigan fans knew better.
And now Steelers fans are beginning to know it, too.
While his rookie season in Pittsburgh wasn’t quite as impressive as his final year in Ann Arbor, the former Michigan standout — well — still stood out as he started learning the ropes at the NFL level. Though he only had one sack in 16 games, he led the team in both solo and combined tackles, had two interceptions and had mostly good game-to-game grades by PFF with only a few exceptions.
Armed with his innate ability to read plays and react quickly, Bush became the first Steelers rookie to lead the team in tackles (109) since the stat began to be tracked in 1994. As a linebacker, Bush finished the season tied for the league lead in fumble recoveries (4) and sixth in interceptions (2).
In 2020, those expectations are elevated, and Bush aims to exceed them.
“Last year I came in, just went in and played and learned as things came to me,” Bush said in a Friday press conference. “But now I have a pretty good idea of what I wanna get done, where I can get better as a player to help this team win.”
Bush added that he would like to be more efficient with his movements. Based on last season, it’s clear he possesses sideline-to-sideline speed; it’s now just a matter of taking more decisive routes to the ball.
“I’m not saying my movements were bad, but just playing in the system I played in in college and switching to another system in the league, things have to change,” said Bush. “I had to get leaner. I had to train differently. I think I’ve done a good job of that.”
Bush’s work this spring laid the groundwork for what has been a strong training camp so far.
Creating something of a fantasy football situation selecting from nearly 40 Wolverines who are currently on NFL rosters to form a team.
[jwplayer bx1nhJG7-XNcErKyb]
According to ESPN, while not all of them are actively playing, Michigan has 40 players currently in the league, bolstered by the 2020 haul with ten draft picks — though it lists Charles Woodson as active, and we’re pretty sure that’s no longer the case.
So, as our colleague over at BuckeyesWire asked, what would an NFL team look like if comprised solely of the players who graduated from one school? Naturally, a Michigan contingent had our interest piqued.
Given that there are a variety of schemes, offensively and defensively, and some players perhaps played a different position in the NFL than they did at Michigan, we came up with our starting maize and blue team in the pro ranks, taking a look at what could be if all of those who wore a winged helmet joined forces to create a Wolverines super team.
Especially with the man leading the charge under center, we’d put this team up against anybody.
Offense
There’s an obvious player to start with, and lots of solid linemen. But otherwise, Michigan is lighter than in recent years with skill position players.
Regardless, with the top choice overall — a man that many pick in the first round of their fantasy drafts — the Wolverines NFL team could be formidable.
Quarterback – Tom Brady
The most obvious selection of the bunch is the greatest of all time.
If you have Tom Brady as your quarterback, you’ve got a chance to win it all. He’s won more rings than anybody with six in his time with the New England Patriots.
While he wasn’t as beloved during his time in Ann Arbor as much as he is now, if you’re building an NFL team out of former Michigan players, the former team captain and over-achieving sixth rounder from the 2000 NFL Draft is like getting the No. 1 pick in your fantasy league — it’s just good business.
In his career, Brady has amassed 74,571 yards in 285 games, with 541 touchdowns to just 179 interceptions.
Brady is No. 2 on the NFL’s all-time passing yards leaders list, behind Drew Brees — but literally ahead of everyone else. He’s also just behind Brees at No. 2 in passing touchdowns, just six away from the top, however.

When you make it to the big leagues, especially if you’re a first-round NFL Draft pick, you have a lot of resources available to you to make your life and home a reflection of you.
So, former Michigan linebacker Devin Bush Jr., who the Pittsburgh Steelers picked at No. 10 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft took full advantage.
Bush had an extensive custom mural painted from the stairwell of his home down to the basement, which included visages from both his time at Michigan, as well as with his new team, Pittsburgh.
It’s something of a dream home for football fans, especially those of Steelers or Wolverines fandom.

While the greatest NFL player of all-time is indisputably Tom Brady, who has six Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots, he was famously a sixth-round NFL Draft pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.
But Michigan is No. 13 of college football institutions with 14 first-round NFL Draft picks since 2000, each with varying levels of success.
WolverinesWire takes a look at all 14 picks with a snippet on their careers in the NFL as well as Ann Arbor.
The two Michigan alums celebrate all things Wolverines on network TV.

NFL Network host Rich Eisen is an unabashed Michigan alum. You know it — or as he’d say: ‘Blue Know It!’
He’s had former Wolverines on NFL Network to tape the segment ‘Blue Know It’ before, such as Charles Woodson. On Saturday, he had a much more recent Michigan football alum on to celebrate all things maize and blue on the national broadcast: former Wolverines linebacker Devin Bush Jr.
If you’re a dyed in the wool maize and blue fan, you’re going to want to see the two-minute segment celebrating all things University of Michigan.
Thankfully, Eisen posted the entirety of it on his Twitter, so you can check it out below.
With @_Dbush11 in-studio, a perfect time to put together another rousing edition of #BlueKnowIt
