Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord get’s his NIL wheels

It’s a nice one #GoBucks

It pays to be Ohio State’s quarterback, and with Name, Image, Likeness aka NIL, it actually does.

With C.J. Stroud off the the NFL, the race to head one of college football’s most powerful offenses is between [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag]. Head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] will continue the derby into the fall but that hasn’t stopped many from projecting who will win the race.

McCord is the clear front runner and if his NIL deal with Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet is correct, then the Buckeyes will be cruising in style this fall. From the looks of it, McCord will be doing that either way.

Check out the Mercedes that he will be riding around campus in this fall.

It really does pay to be an Ohio State quarterback.

Watch: Kirk Herbstreit says Ohio State quarterback battle could go into season

Do you think Herbie is right?

One of the biggest questions for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] heading into the 2023 season is who will win the quarterback derby.

Former Buckeye quarterback [autotag]Kirk Herbsteit[/autotag] shared his thoughts about what could happen for Ohio State this fall with On3’s J.D. Pickell. The current ESPN analyst believes that the competition between [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] could bleed into the the first few games of the seasons.

Can’t say I don’t disagree with Herbie, I had this belief a few months ago when analyzing what both had to offer as the starter. It makes plenty of sense for head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] to do this, each of them has had limited reps at this level and developing depth is paramount.

Brown, the better athlete, could carve out a red zone package that McCord wouldn’t be as good at. The better passer, McCord, already has established a rapport with Marvin Harrison Jr., they did attend the same high school and could lead the passing attack.

It remains to be seen how Day handles the situation, but it’s hard to disagree with Herbstreit’s assessment of the battle.

Which tier did ESPN put Ohio State’s quarterback situation in?

Do you agree? #GoBucks

It’s the biggest question surrounding the [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] program as the season inches to kickoff: Who will be the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback?

The spring showcased the two front runners, Kyle McCord and Devin Brown. Only McCord played in the Spring Game, as Brown was nursing an injury in hopes he is ready to continue the battle in fall camp.

ESPN’s eyes were recently on all quarterbacks across the nation and it put teams’ situations into tiers (subscription required). David Hale ultimately selected the Buckeyes’ situation into tier 3, the “never question the system.”

As he goes over the battle, Hale notes that since 2012, “Ohio State has had a QB1 with a Total QBR better than 70 in every season, and one with a Total QBR better than 80 in all but three seasons.”

Although Hale does have the Buckeyes in that tier, a Big Ten coach told him that “they’ve had really talented quarterbacks,” so it might not just be about the system.

In my eyes, it’s a combination of both. It’s about the talent that Ohio State has amassed while recruiting at an extremely high level. It’s also about the system and offense that head coach Ryan Day runs. With those two factors, it’s hard to believe that whoever becomes the starter, won’t have a great season for the Buckeyes.

Breaking: Half of Ohio State’s quarterback battle out for spring game

Unfortunate news #GoBucks

The culmination of spring practices for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] arrives Saturday when the Scarlet will face the Gray in the LiFEsports Spring game.

The game was supposed to give a glimpse of the quarterback battle between [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag]. Unfortunately for Brown, he will not play in the scrimmage.

It has been reported the second-year player will miss the game due to an injury to a finger on his right hand. It was severe enough that he needed to have a procedure to fix it.

There is good news though. The injury seems minor and sounds as though it shouldn’t linger into the fall. However, in a tight battle — if that’s what we have — missing time and an ability to showcase yourself in a live scrimmage setting in the ‘Shoe isn’t how a starting job is normally drawn up.

Brown took to Twitter to let Buckeye Nation know that he’ll be back.

It’s unfortunate that we will not get to see Brown toss around the football on Saturday, but this isn’t the season and there is no need to play through any injuries.

Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown to wear non-traditional number

New year, new number for Devin Brown. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team kicked off spring practice this week. All eyes will be on the pending quarterback battle between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown to see who will take over for the departed C.J. Stroud. These will be big shoes to fill as Stroud set all sorts of records at OSU. And if Devin Brown were to win the job, he’ll have a big jersey to fill as well.

Brown came to practice with a different look than his No. 15 from last season. Instead, the Utah native will sport No. 33 this year. Seems like an odd choice for a quarterback. Typically, the guys under center wear single digits through the teens. However Brown wanted to honor a hero from the past… Slingin’ Sammy Baugh

Baugh wore No. 45 while in college at TCU and then switched to No. 33 in the pros with the Washington Redskins (now Commanders). Baugh was the first quarterback to make it to Canton in the Hall of Fame class of 1963.

At the end of practice, Brown shared with reporters why he decided to make the change.

“The reason behind it was Sammy Baugh. He was the first quarterback inducted into the (Pro Football) Hall of Fame in 1963 with the Washington Football Team, so he’s a legend,” said Baugh. “That’s the original quarterback number, in my opinion. I want to rock the original quarterback number.”

Brown would go on to say that he remembered his dad talking about Baugh in his youth. So he started wearing No. 33 and stuck with it even through high school.

Ryan Day has said one of his criteria for a starting quarterback is one of leadership. It certainly seems like Brown likes to think outside the box and does so with confidence. Now we just need to see if that kind of swagger can translate to on-the-field production.

Six important Ohio State position battles that will play out during spring practice

We which battle intrigues you the most? #GoBucks

As the calendar turned to February, we are getting closer to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] starting its spring practices. It all culminates with the LiFEsports Spring Game, presented by Union Home Mortgage on April 15.

There are plenty of position battles head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] will monitor over the course of those practices and the glorified scrimmage to end the spring (rain, shine, or sleet).

There are many more question marks for the Buckeyes as they enter the 2023 season after losing multiple contributors to either the [autotag]NFL draft [/autotag] or the transfer portal. Here are six position battles I am looking forward to seeing shake out this spring.

Ryan Day gives an update on Ohio State quarterback competition

Who do you think will emerge as the front-runner after spring #GoBucks

There aren’t many position battles that can change the course of the national college football picture, but for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag], that is likely the case for 2023. When [autotag]C.J. Stroud[/autotag] declared for the NFL Draft, all eyes turned to [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] as Stroud’s successor.

The competition to take over one of college football’s elite offenses is a big task and [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] knows that. The Buckeye boss had a chance to speak with the media Wednesday due to national signing day and updated everyone on how he sees the battle playing out. Day wants to see one of the two emerge as a front-runner, with the potential of naming a starter at the conclusion of spring practice.

I postulated we could see McCord and Brown battle into the season, but it seems Day has different ideas. We will be waiting for reports coming from spring practice to find out who really has the leg up in the competition.

Ranking Ohio State quarterbacks by 247Sports composite recruiting ranking

Ranking Ohio State quarterbacks by recruiting ranking #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program has four quarterbacks on scholarship and is the position with the most eyes on it this offseason. C.J. Stroud leaves a legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Ohio State history, but who is up next?

The Buckeyes have been through this before and have continuously pumped out great quarterbacks under Ryan Day from Dwayne Haskins to Justin Fields to C.J. Stroud, and there is no reason to suggest the next starting quarterback at Ohio State will be anything less than spectacular.

In the following slides, we rank the scholarship quarterbacks on the roster based on the place on the 247Sports composite.

Next up a quarterback for Ohio State: Part 3: The conclusion

How it could play out in about 8 months #GoBucks

We are finally here, the last of a three-part series looking at which candidate, [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] or [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag], has the leg up in the race to be [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s quarterback in 2023.

I will reiterate I don’t believe this contest will be called early. Given the fairly easy early schedule ([autotag]Indiana[/autotag],  [autotag]Youngstown State[/autotag] and [autotag]Western Kentucky[/autotag]), this battle potentially could go into the season. If it does, [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] needs to make a choice before traveling to South Bend.

Part 1 of this series focused on McCord. The second focused on Brown. Now we will put that information together and handicap the race. My final takes on each of them and a prediction prior to spring practices and fall camp of what we will see in 2023 for Ohio State at quarterback.

Next up for Ohio State at quarterback, Part 2: Devin Brown

Devin Brown’s turn to be looked at under a microscope #GoBucks

The second installment of a three-part series going over who could be the next [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] quarterback is here. Yesterday, it was [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag] and his qualities that were broken down, today it is [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag].

Each of the quarterbacks brings a different skill set, but both of them have the ability to lead head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] and newly elevated offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag]’s offense at a high level.

The anticipation of a highly contested quarterback battle is the most likely scenario and it should go deep into fall practice before a starter is named. Let’s take a look at what Brown brings to the table, breaking down his high school career along with what he showed last spring and this past season.
