Notre Dame freshmen weigh in on Derrick Rose-Russell Westbrook debate

Which side do you take in this debate?

We now are in the era of college basketball players who grew up idolizing NBA superstars from the 2010s. It makes the rest of us feel old, but it simply is an effect of time marching on.

To that end, Notre Dame freshmen [autotag]Sir Mohammed[/autotag] and [autotag]Cole Certa[/autotag] appeared on the podcast “Wake Up the Echoes” together, and a debate about two 2010s NBA stars emerged. More specifically, it was about two point guards.

Mohammed expressed appreciation for Russell Westbrook and his triple-doubles. Certa stayed true to his Illinois roots and sided with Derrick Rose. Strangely, the teammates both are taller than their respective heroes even though all of them are guards.

Both NBA stars have MVP awards, but their careers went on different trajectories. Westbrook currently is in the twilight of his career but had a terrific prime. Injuries cost Rose more accomplishments than he otherwise would have had, but he once was the most electric player in the league:

Do you prefer Rose or Westbrook? Like both? Hate both? It’s a question worth asking.

Derrick Rose announced his retirement from basketball after asking to be waived by the Memphis Grizzlies. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 draft played for the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Memphis over his pro career.

Many fans still wonder what Rose, the youngest MVP in NBA history, could have accomplished had he not suffered that horrible ACL injury during the 2012 playoffs.

Here’s how social media reacted to his decision:

Derrick Rose classily bought newspaper ads in all 6 cities he played for his NBA retirement

Cool move from D Rose as he moves into this next chapter of his life.

2011 NBA MVP winner Derrick Rose announced his retirement from basketball on Thursday morning.

After his playing career was over, Rose made a classy decision. Rather than just post on Instagram and other social media platforms, the three-time All-Star point guard chose to show some love to his fans who are a bit less online as well. He also provided them with a cool physical item that they can keep forever as well.

Rose bought a full-page ad in six newspapers across the country, thanking all of the fans who supported him in each city that he played for both in college and in the NBA.

Rose played in college for the Memphis Tigers and then in the NBA for the Chicago Bulls, where he enjoyed the most success.

He also played for the New York Knicks (multiple times), Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies.

So he took out full-page ads in the following  New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Commercial Appeal, Detroit Free Press, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Minneapolis Star Tribune.

That is a cool move from Rose as he moves into this next chapter of his life.

Is Derrick Rose a Hall of Famer after retiring from the NBA? Let’s break it down.

Is D Rose a Hall of Famer?

Fair or not, Derrick Rose’s NBA career is always going to be framed as “What if?”

As in, what if the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls hadn’t dealt with knee problems that robbed him on the explosivity we saw from his incredible Rookie of the Year season through that MVP year in 2010-11?

Because what followed was less than what we had seen. The numbers went down, and eventually, he had to accept life as a sixth man and a role player.

But he settled into that role really nicely and there were some of those WOW D ROSE moments as he shuttled around from team to team.

I’d say 17.4 ppg and 5.2 apg in his career isn’t enough. Even with the MVP, the three All-Star Games and that Rookie of the Year award, he’s probably not a Hall of Famer.

But we will always remember Peak Derrick Rose and what might have been.

A’ja Wilson wore an absolutely sick pair of Derrick Rose-themed shorts ahead of her Aces-Mystics matchup

The Derrick Rose tribute shorts are *chef’s kiss.*

A’ja Wilson‘s fashion game is really top-tier, and we need to talk about it.

If you haven’t been following along this season, I feel sorry for you. A’ja started off 2024 with some FIRE platinum hair for media day that was GIVING all kinds of Storm from X-Men vibes.

Then, she wore some amazing Static shock-themed shoes before landing at the top of our WNBA fits list in Week 8 with a head-turning fuzzy heart purse. (She also made the WNBA fits list a few other times as well for her terrific coordinated looks.)

But, we gotta say, the way she casually rocked these Derrick Rose tribute shorts ahead of an Aces-Mystics matchup has us shouting from the rooftops. These are so GOOD. DROP THE LINK, A’JA. WE NEED A PAIR.

Derrick Rose MVP listed among those that ‘went to the wrong player’

Should Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose have won his 2011 MVP?

As soon as he was drafted first overall, Derrick Rose became a legend in Chicago. The local kid playing for the Chicago Bulls made a name for himself, putting the team back on the map. His success in the city culminated in the 2011 season, when he won the MVP award, but David Kenyon of Bleacher Report believes that it’s one of the ones that “went to the wrong person.”

“Similar to Nash, the memory of Derrick Rose winning an MVP is enjoyable,” Kenwyon wrote. “Especially knowing the career-altering injury that soon followed, it’s sort of a relief that he brought home the award once. But you know why we’re here.

“In a near-unanimous vote, Rose bested Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard (and LeBron). Chicago won an NBA-leading 62 games behind Rose’s 25.0 points and 7.7 assists per game—and a hellacious, top-ranked defense that atoned for his shortcomings on that end. Howard, meanwhile, carried an injury-plagued Orlando roster to 52 wins. En route to his third straight Defensive Player of the Year honor, he averaged 22.9 points, 14.1 rebounds, 2.4 blocks and 1.4 steals. Rose remains the youngest MVP winner at 22 years old.”

With Dwight Howard’s incredible season going overlooked, as well as LeBron James’, should Rose have won the award in hindsight?

Former Bulls MVP Derrick Rose almost retired at end of last season

Former Chicago Bulls MVP Derrick Rose nearly retired this past offseason.

Over the years, the Chicago Bulls have had some legendary players suit up in the red and black. Obviously, there are the Michael Jordans and Scottie Pippens of the world, but since the turn of the century, no Bull has been more of a fan-favorite in Chicago than Derrick Rose.

Chicago selected Rose, who grew up in the city, with the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. In his very first season with the Bulls, Rose helped lead the Bulls to a playoff spot, and by his third year with the squad, he became the youngest player to ever win the MVP award.

The love Chicago has for Rose exists to this day, even though the Bulls decided to trade him to the New York Knicks in 2016. And while Rose is still in the league, playing with the Memphis Grizzlies, he almost retired at the end of last season.

“Around that time I was still trying to figure out if I still wanted to play,” Rose told Stefan Bondy of the New York Post. “Just trying to figure out my route, if I wanted to stay or leave.”

Rose has dealt with some injuries this season, and the Grizzlies have spiraled toward the bottom of the West due to missing so many players for extended periods of time.

However, the former Bull has appeared in 18 games for Memphis this season. In those contests, he’s averaged 8.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 44.7% from the floor and 35.1% from behind the three-point line.

The remaining active NBA players from each draft class between 2003 and 2010

It is truly remarkable that LeBron is still playing as well as he does.

With each passing season, more and more players in the previous generation of the NBA are graduating into retirement.

Some of the most recognizable and dominant players of a beloved era (e.g. Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, etc.) have recently ended their professional playing careers.

As the league begins to look increasingly different every year, we decided to look at which players drafted before 2011 are still active in the league. There are only 30 players who fit those qualifications and only 19 have started more than one game this season.

Here is a look at each NBA draft class and who remains active years later.

All data is provided via Stathead and is accurate as of publishing.

Carlos Boozer reflects on time with Derrick Rose-led Bulls: ‘We were like rockstars’

During a recent interview, Carlos Boozer reflected on his time with the Derrick Rose-led Chicago Bulls.

Michael Jordan was the ultimate celebrity when he was in the NBA. His presence alone made the Chicago Bulls a worldwide brand – a fact that now remains to this day. But since his departure from the league, the Bulls have produced plenty more star-level players.

The most notable of the bunch was Derrick Rose, whose connection to the city of Chicago made him a fan favorite. In turn, the Rose-led Bulls were one of the more popular teams in recent memory. With Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer, and others by his side, Rose brought the Bulls back onto the main stage.

During a recent interview with Betway, Boozer reflected on his time in Chicago with that group.

Carlos Boozer calls Derrick Rose ‘most athletic point guard’ in NBA history

Former Chicago Bulls big man Carlos Boozer called Derrick Rose the “most athletic point guard” in NBA history.

Throughout the years, the Chicago Bulls have fielded plenty of competitive teams. Obviously, the Michael Jordan-led Bulls were the cream of the crop, but since then, they’ve managed to put together some solid rosters. Derrick Rose helped the Bulls reach the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since Jordan in 2011, but he needed some help.

Chicago was led by Rose, but guys like Joakim Noah, Luol Deng, and Carlos Boozer were crucial in the team’s success. Boozer joined the team via a trade with the Utah Jazz prior to the start of the 2010-11 season. He went from playing with one All-Star guard in Deron Williams to another in Rose.

In an interview with Betway, Boozer discussed the differences between the two, throwing some high praise Rose’s way.
