What can the Oklahoma Sooners do to defend Texas running back Bijan Robinson?

Slowing Texas running back Bijan Robinson is priority No. 1 for the Oklahoma Sooners. What will it take from the Sooners defense to limit his impact?

Oklahoma entered last week trying to solve a Deuce Vaughn problem. It emerged victorious, but it would be a stretch to stay the Sooners solved the Kansas State running back. If they thought that was hard, they’re going to hate what they have to do this weekend when they travel to Dallas, Texas, to take on the Texas Longhorns.

The Red River Rivalry has featured some amazing talents and this next iteration proves no different. The Longhorns no longer are dependent on quarterback Sam Ehlinger to throw and run them to wins. Instead, they have an offense centered around Bijan Robinson, a sophomore running back from Tucson, Arizona.

Robinson, a former five-star recruit, is quite the player. He can lower his pads and get the tough yards between the tackles. He can run the outside zone and stretch plays and beat you to the corner. He can catch the ball out of the backfield, too. Simply put, he can do it all.

He’s north of six feet and more than 200 pounds. A stark difference to Deuce Vaughn, who stood at 5 feet, 6 inches and less than 185 pounds. Robinson offers a different challenge.

Oklahoma’s efforts to stop Robinson will start with the interior defensive line. Without the versatile Jalen Redmond, the Sooners will have to rely upon Isaiah Coe, Josh Ellison and LaRon Stokes. All three have played quite a bit of football and have been a part of this game multiple times.

Challenging them will be a Texas offensive line that has struggled with protections and had to shuffle some new players in after losing Denzel Okafor to a season-ending lower leg injury. Oklahoma’s veteran front will have to impose its will. Expect the rotation of bodies to continue as Alex Grinch’s “Speed D” relies on max effort on every play. Pass protection and consistency sustaining run blocks have been issues as Texas has shuffled its offensive line in the absence of Okafor.

Texas will double Perrion Winfrey and hope it’s enough to spring Robinson into the second level. Awaiting him will be linebackers Brian Asamoah, DaShaun White, David Ugwoegbu, Shane Whitter and maybe Danny Stutsman. These linebackers have looked much better playing downhill and filling gaps in the run game than in pass coverage. However, filling the gaps is one thing. Tackling is another. Robinson will not go down via arm tackling or getting caught flat-footed as they did against Vaughn in space. Contact, wrap up and finish. A team effort. Robinson led the NCAA in missed tackles forced in Week 5 and leads all of the Football Bowl Subdivision this season in missed tackles forced.

DaShaun White or Shane Whitter on tape looks like Oklahoma’s better coverage linebackers. In man coverage, they’ll likely be tasked to follow Robinson on outs, wheels, or the “Texas” route.

Robinson will get his touches whether Texas is winning or losing. He’s their best offensive player. Making Robinson accept tough yards and not giving the chunk plays is where Oklahoma should focus their efforts. If the Sooners cannot contain Robinson, there’s a real chance that Texas walks out the victors.

Texas offensive lineman Denzel Okafor out for remainder of season due to leg injury

He is expected to undergo season-ending surgery.

On a play that resulted in a Texas touchdown against TCU, the end result was not all smiles. Super senior offensive lineman Denzel Okafor went down with an apparent leg injury and had to be carted off the field.

After blocking his man and helping open up a gap, Okafor seemed to get rolled up from behind, which is likely what caused the injury.

When Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke with the media on Monday, he announced that Okafor’s injury will require surgery and cause him to miss the remainder of the season.

This injury likely marks the end of the sixth-year senior’s college football career. With Texas, Okafor played in 48 career games while making 14 starts. The Lewisville native was also a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He was one of the few players that the new staff seemed eager about during fall camp, as he was reportedly making great strides in his development.

In regards to how the team will adjust the line in his absence, although nothing has been formally announced by Sarkisian, after Okafor went down during the TCU game redshirt freshman Adrej Karic came in off the bench and played right tackle while Derek Kertstetter slid over to left guard.

Update: Derek Kerstetter suffered lower leg injury, won’t return

During the second quarter of the game, senior Derek Kerstetter suffered a horrific injury. He won’t return for the Texas Longhorns today.

Throughout the week heading into the game against Kansas State, starting center Derek Kerstetter was listed as questionable with an ankle injury. The Texas Longhorns would end up playing him at his old spot at right tackle to start the game.

Kerstetter was moved to fill the void left by Samuel Cosmi after he opted out of the season. Christian Jones was moved from right tackle to the left side. Freshman Jake Majors started at center and they played Derek at right tackle. It was looking good early on for the Texas Longhorns offense. In the middle of the second quarter, it took a turn for the worse.

After the defense recovered a fumble deep in Wildcats territory, Kerstetter suffered a horrific injury. It was listed as a lower extremity injury that appeared to be his left leg. The entire team would rally around one of their senior leaders as he was carted off the field.

It was reported that Kerstetter was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Rafiti Ghirmai came into the game to play right guard and Denzel Okafor moved out to right tackle.

Texas Longhorns Football: Offensive line is a huge concern

Offensive line coach Herb Hand’s unit hasn’t been great for the Texas Longhorns. On Saturday they provided no help for a struggling offense.

There are plenty of areas of the Texas Longhorns football team that can be highlighted as an issue for this football team. On Saturday, offensive line coach Herb Hand and his unit moved to the forefront of the conversation. This season that unit has been under fire all year. Against the Sooners in Dallas, Texas the offensive line didn’t provide any relief for a struggling offense.

This isn’t something new for Hand. During his final year at Auburn, it was also a problem. They were ranked 10th in the Southeastern Conference in sacks allowed. It seems to be a common issue for Hand’s units. When Tom Herman wiped out most of the staff, he kept Hand and running back’s coach Stan Drayton. Hand hasn’t been able to fix some of these issues that continue to bite them.

Using Pro Football Focus numbers, the team as a whole allowed 23 pressures by the Sooners defense. Of the times that Sam Ehlinger dropped back to pass, he faced pressure on 32.8% of the time. Essentially a third of the time, the quarterback faced some sort of pressure. On those passes he was sacked a total of six times in this game. Ehlinger had an amoebic 2.6 yards per attempt. Longhorns Wire will have more on Ehlinger’s struggles a bit later on.

Up front the line was unable to give Ehlinger enough time in the pocket. Christian Jones led the team with allowed pressures. He allowed eight total pressures and one sack. No one on the team had more than three pressured surrendered in this game. Left tackle Samuel Cosmi was the lone blocker to not allow a single pressure on the quarterback.

Derek Kerstetter and Junior Angilau both allowed three pressures and one sack apiece. Angilau also was called for two different penalties that hurt the football team. The lone penalty from Kerstetter cost the football team a shot at a touchdown. After a long run by Ehlinger, the team was set up with a forth and short inside the five-yard line. The personal foul after the play forced Texas to kick a field goal and take the decision to go for it off the table.

Kerstetter as a whole has struggled at the center position since moving over from right tackle. Denzel Okafor allowed two pressures and a sack. All in all they haven’t been a very solid unit. Their struggles fall at the feet of Hand and head coach Tom Herman. With the bye week for the Texas Longhorns before they host Baylor, it would be as good a time as any to make some changes on the line.

The Longhorns have a highly touted center listed behind Kerstetter. Jake Majors was one of the top recruits from the 2020 cycle. His rankings according to 247Sports Composite put Majors as the No. 5 center in the country as a four-star recruit. Kerstetter was one of the highest graded right tackles, it might be a better move to fix the center and right tackle. Isaiah Hookfin should also get some looks at the guard spot in place of Okafor.

The big issue with Hand’s unit is not only the struggles with protecting the quarterback but also running the football. The Longhorns team is much better when they can get the running game going. Outside of breaking some long runs, this team has been unable to get any semblance of a run game going.

The team has run for 474 yards this year without Ehlinger’s 242 yards included. The team needs to get more from the run game and it starts up front. The team hasn’t been able to have a consistent run game to help out the offense that has shown some struggles over the last two games. The offense needs to be better and while no one unit or player is to blame, it would benefit from an improved effort in the trenches.

Tom Herman discussed the offensive line performance, better than he thought

Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman spoke about the offensive line’s performance against Texas Tech.

There are a lot of storylines to unpack after the Texas Longhorns survived a 15-point deficit with just over three minutes left in the game. Sam Ehlinger rallied his team two touchdown passes and a two-point conversion sandwiched around an onside kick recovery. Needing to score fast and effeciently with the clock winding down, Yurcich abandoned the run and let Ehlinger go to work through the air.

However, one of the focal points after the wild 63-56 win was the offensive line for the Texas Longhorns. Ehlinger would be sacked four times during this game. The offensive line allowed 12 pressures total according to Pro Football Reference. That equates to pressure on 23.5% of drop backs. On the flip side the Red Raiders allowed zero sacks and pressure on 20% of drop backs.

Tom Herman spoke with the media on Monday and he weighed in on his offensive line.

While the argument can be made that he played better than he thought, there is really no excuse for this unit. Coach Herb Hand’s unit was getting beat consistently with just three man pressure. Late in the third quarter, the Red Raiders brought three men on a rush that forced Sam on the run where he threw his lone interception. The next drive Tech would take the lead 42-38 as they closed the third quarter.

The offensive line needs to fix some of their issues with Texas Christian and Oklahoma looming on the schedule. If the Longhorns want to take the Big 12 Championship for the first time since 2009, then fixing the protection is going to be monumental.

PFF pass blocking grades against Texas Tech

Lineman Grades
Junior Angilau 79.1
Samuel Cosmi 77.2
Christian Jones 75.8
Denzel Okafor 75.1
Derek Kerstetter 50.7

The only member of the offensive line not credited with a sack given up in the Tech game was Denzel Okafor.

Going into the 2020 football season, LonghornsWire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas roster.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at senior right guard Denzel Okafor.

Denzel Okafor, Right guard

Height: 6-4 / Weight: 317

Class: Redshirt Senior

Hometown: Lewisville, Texas

High School: Lewisville

HS ranking (247Sports): Four-star / No. 243 overall / No. 12 position / No. 36 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Four-star / No. 244 overall / No. 14 position / No. 34 in-state

Analysis: Going into his fifth season with the program, Denzel Okafor is going to be the oldest member of the offensive line. Part of the 2016 recruiting class, Okafor was a Charlie Strong recruit.

Redshirting during his junior year, Okafor returned in 2019 and appeared in all 13 games. He made one start throughout the year against Iowa State. The redshirt senior has five career starts going into this season.

Head coach Tom Herman said he feels “better today than ever” about Okafor taking over as the starting right guard. Playing guard and tackle during his time in Austin, Okafor will now be apart of an interior offensive line that must improve in 2020.

UCLA OT enters the transfer portal, should Texas kick the tires?

Current UCLA right tackle Jake Burton announced on Twitter he would be entering the transfer portal. Should the Longhorns give him a look?

One of the expectations of the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences punting on the season had to be the transfer portal. How many players would enter the transfer portal in an effort to play in the fall? UCLA offensive tackle Jake Burton announced on Tuesday that he would indeed enter the portal for the opportunity to play in the fall. He made his announcement on Twitter.

I wish to thank God and my family for all of the love, guidance and support they have given me during my time at UCLA. I also wish to thank Coach Mora, Coach Fraley, Coach McClure and Coach Fisch for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play for this amazing school. Coach Kelly, Coach Frye, Coach Wintrich, Coach Heiberger and Mr. Rick Aversano have helped me develop as a football player and I wish to thank them for their dedication and support. I was looking forward to finishing my college career with my Bruin teammates. Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, that is not possible this year. After much thought, I have decided to enter the portal in hopes of gaining the opportunity to play football this Fall.

Jake Burton started at right tackle for the Bruins the last two seasons with 23 starts and appeared in all 24 possible games. Burton started out his career as a defensive lineman before moving over to offensive line prior to his redshirt freshman season in 2017. Now a redshirt senior, Burton is looking to take part in the upcoming season.

Given the situation at right tackle, it would make sense for the Longhorns to kick the tires on Burton. He could likely start immediately once he gets acclimated to what the Longhorns do on offense. Last year’s right tackle Derek Kerstetter is being kicked inside to play center leaving the right tackle position open for the taking. While many felt that the starting right tackle job could belong to Denzel Okafor, Burton has the experience.

Burton received a 79.3 offensive grade last season for the Bruins. Samuel Cosmi was graded at 83.9. Kerstetter received a 71 offensive grade. The former three-star prospect will be looking for a home this fall and the Longhorns just might have the opportunity that the is looking for.
