Texas’ offensive line had a very productive game against Houston

As we gather our thoughts after Texas’ 31-24 victory over Houston, it’s time we give the offensive line their flowers.

As we gather our thoughts after the Texas 31-24 victory over Houston, it’s time we give the offensive line their flowers.

The Longhorns have an elite offensive line, and on Saturday they further proved that theory. In 69 snaps, the five starters allowed just two sacks, one hurry, and four quarterback pressures.

Left tackle Kelvin Banks had the best day by far, not allowing any pressures, sacks, or hurries. Pro Football Focus gave Banks an 87.5 pass block grade, one of his best games this season so far.

Hayden Conner, DJ Campbell, and Jake Majors also had impressive games. The only lineman that didn’t have a decent game against Houston was right tackle Christian Jones. The senior tackle allowed one sack, one hurry, and two quarterback pressures. PFF gave Jones a 64.9 pass bock grade.

Though it might not seem like it after watching the game, the o-line had a very productive game and will need to continue their impressive play if quarterback Quinn Ewers is ruled out for multiple weeks.

On3 Sports ranks the top 10 offensive line units in college football

Texas has a top-five offensive line unit in college football.

On3 Sports continues its 2023 position groups rankings for the upcoming college football season.

After starting with the quarterback position last week, the newest list goes to the trenches, ranking the best offensive line units in the nation.

Texas checks in at No. 5 on the rankings. The Longhorns return all five starters from a season ago, headlined by freshman All-American Kelvin Banks Jr.

Depth is an area where Texas’ offensive line is as strong as it has been in quite some time. The two deep is full of a blend of quality experience and talent, putting the Longhorns in great shape up front.

The offensive line has been a weakness at Texas for what feels like forever. Inconsistency up front led to struggles in the Charlie Strong and Tom Herman era.

Steve Sarkisian prioritized beefing up the offensive line when he was hired three years ago. Texas signed the No. 1 ranked offensive line class in the 2022 recruiting cycle. Those players, along with the development of the older guys, have started to raise the expectations in Austin.

Here is a complete look at On3’s offensive line rankings ahead of the 2023 season.

Texas returns two of the top pass blockers in the Big 12

Texas’ offensive line sits in great shape entering the 2023 season.

Texas’ offensive line sits in great shape entering the 2023 season. The Longhorns return all five starters, including second-year phenom Kelvin Banks at left tackle and super senior Chrisitan Jones at right tackle.

Banks enjoyed a freshman All-American season in 2022. The former five-star prospect lived up to the hype, starting in every game at left tackle for the Longhorns. Sky is the limit for Banks moving forward.

Jones stepped up his game during his senior year for Texas last season. The emergence of Banks allowed Jones to slide over to right tackle, where he excelled in year two under offensive line coach Kyle Flood. Jones is taking advantage of his COVID-19 year and returning for another season as a Longhorn.

The Texas tackle duo ranks among the best returners in the Big 12 Conference in pass-blocking efficiency. Banks and Jones hope to keep the Texas quarterback upright this season.

Texas LT Kelvin Banks named 2022 Freshman All-American by On3 Sports

Kelvin Banks earns freshman All-American honors.

Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks enjoyed one of the best freshman seasons across the entire nation. The crown jewel of the Longhorns’ 2022 offensive line class is establishing himself as a star.

On3 Sports named Banks to its 2022 True Freshman All-American team for his effort this year.

Banks arrived on Texas’ campus in the summer and immediately locked down the left side of the Longhorns’ offensive line. He held his own against some of the nation’s best pass rushers all season long, only allowing two sacks in 12 games.

Notable names Banks performed well against include Will Anderson (Alabama), Dallas Turner (Alabama), Tyree Wilson (Texas Tech), Felix Anudike-Uzomah (Kansas State) and Will McDonald IV (Iowa State).

The future of the Texas offensive line looks to be in great shape with Banks anchoring down the left tackle spot.

Texas OL Kelvin Banks is emerging as a superstar

Kelvin Banks could very well be on his way to a Freshman All-American season.

Texas’ offensive line entered the new season with tons of question marks to account for. The Longhorns’ offensive front ranked in the bottom half of the Big 12 in 2021 and lost its most experienced player Junior Angilau to injury before the season.

Yes, Texas signed the nation’s top offensive line class in the 2022 recruiting cycle, but it is rare for a true freshman to show up ready to contribute to the position.

Five-star true freshman Kelvin Banks won Texas’ left tackle spot in fall camp and is locking down the left side of the offensive line.

Banks could very well be on his way to a Freshman All-American season. He holds the best pass-blocking grade of any true freshman in the country according to Pro Football Focus.

Banks has not let any moment get too big for him. He held the dynamic Alabama pass rush of Will Anderson and Dallas Turner to zero sacks in his second career collegiate start. Banks played his best game of the season in Week 6 in the Red River Showdown.

He set the tone with his physicality and toughness early on against the Oklahoma Sooners.

The future of Texas’ offensive line looks to be in great shape with Banks leading the charge. Kyle Flood has done a fantastic job developing his group this season.

Texas QB Quinn Ewers using his NIL deals to benefit his teammates

Ewers gifts each of his offensive lineman new travel bags ahead of the Red River Showdown.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is using one of his many name, image and likeness deals on gifts for his teammates ahead of the Red River Showdown.

Ewers partnered with Lucchese Boot Company for a new travel bag for each of Texas’ offensive linemen.

The redshirt freshman has taken advantage of his NIL at the collegiate level. Ewers chose to forgo his senior year of high school in 2021 to enroll at Ohio State, and he made upward of seven figures in his short time in Columbus.

Since transferring to Texas in the offseason the NIL deals have continued to roll in for Ewers. He has lucrative deals with Lucchese, Wrangler, GT Sports Marketing and many more.

On3 Sports’ NIL evaluation has Ewers’ deals worth more than $1 million, which is good for a top 10 ranking in the country.

Ewers is slated to make his awaited return from injury against Oklahoma this Saturday.
