OU-Texas, Red River Rivalry game time and broadcast information set

The greatest rivalry in all of sports has a kick off time for the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for this year’s Red River Rivalry.

The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a 4-0 start to the season. They’ve looked promising on both sides of the ball, but there’s one game that will tell the tale of the Sooners’ development.

Iowa State is the focus for the program with the Cyclones coming to town this Saturday evening for a primetime affair. However, a number of observers are pointing to the October 7 clash with the Texas Longhorns as the true litmus test for this team.

And now we have a time and television channel for the annual showdown in the greatest rivalry in sports.

Oklahoma and Texas will kick off in the Cotton Bowl at 11 a.m. CT on ABC.

The Oklahoma Sooners are hoping to wipe away the memory of the 49-0 shutout they suffered at the hands of the Longhorns in last year’s matchup. Presumably, Dillon Gabriel will be available this year after missing the showdown a year ago due to a concussion.

But he and the Sooners defense are playing good football right now. They’re one of the best defenses in the country and are proving to have one of the best passing attacks in college football.

Texas will have to contend with an ever-improving Kansas Jayhawks team in Austin before assuming they roll into Dallas undefeated. However, if OU and Texas both hold serve, there’s a chance this year’s Red River Rivalry game is a top 10 matchup of undefeated teams.

Oklahoma highlights USA TODAY Sports’ list of best games in the SEC in 2024

Oklahoma highlights USA Today’s list of best games in the SEC in 2024.

With the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns moving to the SEC next year, we just got our first look at what that looks like with the SEC opponents reveal for 2024.

The SEC did the Sooners zero favors when it comes their schedule. This rings out in USA Today’s list of the Top 10 SEC games for the 2024 season by Jace Evans.

Evans includes the five different matchups including the Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma is going into a buzzsaw in the SEC, at least on paper.

Evans introduces the list by talking about a key scheduling quirk in the new SEC. There are no more divisions, and because of that, the matchups can get even more interesting.

The SEC has released the schedule for the 2024 football season … mostly. Specific dates and times have yet to be nailed down, but we have the most important thing: The matchups and the locations.

And there’s a lot to take in on that front considering the SEC is gaining two new members in 2024 in Oklahoma and Texas, two true college football blue bloods. Their maiden voyage in an SEC that is also doing away with divisions creates a number of interesting games between powers that just haven’t clashed all that much, or at least not recently. But there’s plenty of other great matchups on the schedule between traditional SEC powers, too. – Evans, USA TODAY Sports

Here’s a look at the five matchups featuring Oklahoma that Evans believes are top 10 games in 2024.

Final thoughts on Oklahoma vs. Texas and the Red River Showdown

With kickoff approaching, here are a few final thoughts on the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas longhorns in the Red River Showdown.

The Red River Rivalry is set to take center stage for the 118th time in the history of the matchup. While neither Oklahoma nor Texas come into this game ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, this game still has the attention of many across the nation.

Sure ESPN’s College Gameday will be in Lawrence, Kansas, for the Jayhawks tilt with TCU and has first place in the Big 12 implications, but this is still OU-Texas. It’s one of the best rivalries in sports.

With kickoff just a few hours away, here are a few final thoughts heading into the matchup.

Bleacher Report predicts Sooners upset by the Longhorns in the Red River Showdown

Looking ahead to 2022, Bleacher Report puts Oklahoma on upset alert for the 2022 Red River Showdown with the Texas Longhorns.

Spring ball is underway, and more way-too-early predictions are on the way, with more than four months to go until the 2022 college football season. For Oklahoma and Texas fans, the game circled on everybody’s calendar is the Red River Showdown.

In one of the greatest rivalries in sports, the two sides have met 117 times. Texas holds the all-time edge at 62-50-5, but the Oklahoma Sooners have been closing the gap over the last two decades.

Since 2000, the Oklahoma Sooners are 16-7 against the Longhorns. Since 2010, they’re 10-3 over their Red River rivals.

Last year’s matchup featured an epic comeback by the Oklahoma Sooners. They were down at halftime 38-18 before an epic second half comeback saw Oklahoma win in the game’s final minutes.

Regardless of records or rankings, it’s a game that’s come down to the final possession in recent years, and while the Sooners have won four straight in the series, it’s been a battle every time the two sides meet in Dallas.

Looking ahead to potential upset games in 2022, Bleacher Report picked the Texas Longhorns to knock off the Sooners in an upset at the Cotton Bowl.

While there are still plenty of question marks on defense, Texas has reloaded on offense, bringing in transfers such as quarterback Quinn Ewers and receiver Isaiah Neyor to go along with Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington.

The Texas Longhorns certainly have the firepower to compete with anyone in the Big 12. But that wasn’t necessarily the Longhorns’ problem last season. Again, they scored 38 first half points against the Sooners. Their defense couldn’t get any stops in the second half and allowed a plethora of big plays on the ground and through the air that allowed Oklahoma to erase their halftime deficit.

Every year is a new year, and Texas could have improved enough defensively. Combine that with Oklahoma’s turnover in the coaching staff and on both sides of the ball, and the Sooners might be on upset alert in 2022. However, it never matters which team is the most talented or who is playing better heading into the game. Oklahoma will get the Longhorns’ best shot no matter the circumstance, and the Sooners will have to find a way to avoid the upset.

“It was a business decision:” CeeDee Lamb on the Red River Showdown Quarterback Change

Former Oklahoma Sooners Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on the Red River quarterback change.

Former Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is familiar with the energy and the emotions that come from playing in the Red River Showdown. The Sooners went 3-1 vs. the Texas Longhorns (including the Big 12 Championship Game in 2018).

In four games, Lamb 25 receptions for 487 yards and six touchdowns. Losing the 2018 game where Oklahoma had to rally to tie it only to lose the game at the end, Lamb understands the highs and lows that come with the OU-Texas game.

So even when the offense was down 14-0, the former Sooners wide receiver didn’t give up because he “knew what the offense [is capable of doing].”

On Wednesday, CeeDee Lamb shared his thoughts on the quarterback change with the media.

It was a business decision. Obviously, Spencer didn’t have the best half he wanted. But obviously the young guy Caleb (Williams) definitely did a great job coming in when it was his time and stepping in.

I’m sure the team will appreciate him and I’m sure Spencer (Rattler) still has the same love he does for the o-line and the team and the chemistry going that’s going on in that locker room.

It’s unclear at this point where the quarterback situation is headed for the Oklahoma Sooners. Lincoln has been reluctant to name a starting quarterback before their matchup with TCU.

Whether it’s Caleb Williams or Spencer Rattler, the Oklahoma Sooners will have a good option at quarterback. Whichever way they go, the most critical thing to CeeDee Lamb?

“Keep it going. We’re undefeated. Boomer.”

How did CBS Sports grade the Oklahoma Sooners’ Red River Showdown win?

Oklahoma’s win over the Longhorns was an improbable comeback story for the ages, but how did CBS Sports grade their performance vs. UT?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://soonerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

In the Oklahoma Sooners win over the Texas Longhorns, OU didn’t get their first lead of the game until 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. They battled back from a 28-7 first-quarter deficit to win a game that they had no reasonable shot at winning. And it all started with “The Decision.”

As the Sooners were driving to turn OU-Texas back into a one-score game, something it hadn’t been since the opening minutes of the game, Spencer Rattler fumbled the ball for his second turnover of the day. Lincoln Riley inserted Caleb Williams and though it might have been a slow start, what transpired in the second half was nothing short of sports miraculous.

The Sooners outscored the Texas Longhorns 35-10 in the second half to complete the improbable comeback. For their efforts in winning the Red River Showdown, Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports gave the Sooners an A- in his week six report card.

Here’s what he had to say.

Caleb Williams came off of the pine like Jonathan Moxson in “Varsity Blues” to lead the Sooners to a wild, 21-point comeback win in a shootout in the Red River Showdown. That’s the bright side. The defense gave up 516 yards to the Longhorns. That can’t continue if the Sooners intend to win the national title.

It was a wild game that provided every twist and turn one could imagine in a college football game. This game will be prominently featured in Oklahoma highlight reels for years to come, while the Texas Longhorns will work to forget the epic collapse.

As the Sooners get set to face the TCU Horned Frogs, they have some things to clean up on both sides of the football. The first thing they’ll need to figure out is who starts for them at quarterback. While that won’t be easy news to deliver, it should be a fairly straightforward decision for Lincoln Riley and his coaching staff based on how Saturday went.

3 Stars: Which Sooners shined brightest “deep in the heart of Texas?”

There were a litany of stand-out performances on Saturday for the Sooners, but which stars shined brightest “deep in the heart of Texas?”

If there was ever a game where individual performances reigned supreme, it was the 2021 edition of the Red River Showdown. The Sooners won an all-time classic in dramatic fashion over the Texas Longhorns 55-48. The ups and downs of the game were enough to make the most relaxed person stressed out. When the dust cleared, however, it was the Sooners who were on top.

For the Sooners, it was a team effort. However, several players rose to the occasion in the biggest game of the year (to date).

Third Star: Marvin Mims, Wide Receiver

Mims came into this season looking to cement himself as one of the nation’s best receivers. The first game against Tulane provided that glimpse of what he could be, but as the offense faltered and defenses started playing Oklahoma differently, his production declined.

Last week against Kansas State, Mims came up big with four catches for 96 yards. If that was him softly reminding us he was still capable, Saturday’s effort against Texas was him yelling at the nation, “I’m still that guy!”

Mims made play after play and had two huge catches down the field to help out his true freshman quarterback Caleb Williams. That doesn’t even include his touchdown catch that came after Williams fumbled a shotgun snap in the red zone.

Mims is the undisputed WR1 on this team, and he’s very much back to making explosive plays, which the Oklahoma offense has lacked in 2021.

Best Social Media Reactions from OU’s 55-48 win over Texas

Take a look back at the Sooners thrilling win over the Longhorns with some of the best social media reactions from the Red River Showdown.

It was a thrilling game with loads of ups and downs as the Oklahoma Sooners rallied from as many as 21 points down to beat the Texas Longhorns in the 117th matchup between the bitter rivals.

The game was full of highlights on both sides as Texas’ Casey Thompson, Bijan Robinson, and Xavier Worthy put on a show against an Oklahoma Sooners defense that struggled in the first half before settling in and getting stops in the second half.

After a couple of costly turnovers for the Sooners, Spencer Rattler gave way to Caleb Williams, and the true freshman helped the Sooners outscore Texas 38-13 the rest of the way. Kennedy Brooks had a fantastic game, rushing for more than 200 yards, and Marvin Mims was “marvelous” as he torched the Longhorns for some big plays of his own.

It was as emotional a trip as any Red River Showdown and a game that will live on in the minds of those who played in it and those who witnessed it forever.

Let’s look back at some of the best social media reactions to the Sooners come from behind win as we continue our look back. Also, make sure you take a look at our seven takeaways from the Sooners win.

RECAP: Oklahoma Sooners beat Texas Longhorns 55-48 in All-Time Red River Showdown

The Oklahoma Sooners overcame a 21 point deficit to beat the Texas Longhorns in an instant classic Red River Showdown.

The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns finished an absolute shootout and all-time Red River Showdown ending with the Sooners winning 55-48. The game had so many ups and downs for both teams the winning probability chart most certainly looked like a roller coaster.

ESPN Win Probability Chart

Texas would get the ball first and would score on their first play from scrimmage as Casey Thompson threw a bubble screen to freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a 75-yard touchdown pass. Worthy would finish with nine catches for 261 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma’s ensuing possession ended with a third-down sack due to a missed blitz pickup. Oklahoma would attempt to punt but Michael Turk’s attempt was tipped and Texas recovered on the Oklahoma two-yard line. Two plays later the 14 point lead.

The Sooners eventually overcame a 21-point deficit, matching the second-largest comeback in program history. Replacing Spencer Rattler in the second quarter after the starting quarterback’s second turnover of the game, Caleb Williams completed 15 of 24 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Both of Rattler’s turnovers led to led to Texas touchdowns. Caleb Williams also ran 66 yards for the Sooners second touchdown of the game.

Kennedy Brooks was at the forefront of the Sooners comeback as he ran for 217 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 3 seconds left.

Marvin Mims led the Sooners in receiving for the second straight week posting five catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Longhorns quarterback Casey Thompson went 20 of 34 for 388 yards and five touchdowns. Bijan Robinson ran 20 times for 137 yards and one early touchdown.

Oklahoma moves on to 6-0 with TCU next on the agenda. Texas will drop to 4-2 and will move on to a home showdown with the other Big 12 school from Oklahoma in Oklahoma State.

Final thoughts on the Red River Showdown and some favorite memories

Now just hours from kickoff, here are some final thoughts and favorite memories from the Red River Showdown.

As the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns get set to kick off in a pivotal Big 12 matchup, the Oklahoma Sooners are getting some good news with the return of Marcus Major. It’s possible that Marcus Major could play for the Sooners in the Red River Showdown, but how much remains to be seen.

Oklahoma comes into the game after a nice win over Kansas State. It was as good a win as they’ve had all season, even if the scoreboard reflects another narrow victory. The defense was active and got the stops when they needed to. The offense was efficient and scored on seven of their eight drives.

Coming into this week, the Sooners had things to work on, namely tackling, as they missed 15 tackles last week per Pro Football Focus. The Sooners can’t afford another tackling effort like that against Texas. It will be an incredibly long day if it is.

While tackling was an issue for the defense, the offense seemed to figure some things out. Spencer Rattler had arguably his best game of the season, throwing just three incompletions. He was accurate and decisive, getting the ball out quickly and hitting receivers in stride. Though there appeared to be a couple of miscommunications between Rattler and his receivers on deep routes, he looked fantastic. Hopefully, that’s a sign of things to come for the Sooners’ quarterback.

Another positive sign from last week was the way the offensive line played in the running game. If they can build off of that performance against Kansas State today in the Cotton Bowl, it will go a long way to securing a win for Oklahoma.

With that, let’s take a look at a couple more keys to the game and some of my favorite memories from the Red River Showdown.
